Hey you guys.

I have a home-built desktop running XP Pro connected to a Netgear wireless router and my wife just bought a Toshiba laptop running Vista Home Premium. We can already go online on the laptop through the router but we still can't access each other's files. How do I go about this? I already enabled file sharing on the hard drives that she needs access to. So basically our set-up is like this:

Cable modem > wireless router > ethernet cable > PC(desktop) laptop (wireless)

Thanks in advance!

Vista clamps down much harder on File and Printer Sharing.

Clcik>Start>Network

From the Network display, select "Network and Sharing Center"

Under "Sharing and Discovery", make sure all relevant settings are "ON"(I have everything On except Printer Sharing and Password protected sharing).

Make sure your firewall settings allow sharing also. Microsoft One Care is also as restrictrive and you must also allow sharing within it if that is your antivirus/firewall program installed.

it works better then xp to xp did. you just need to adress the workgroup name, vista doesnt do it automatically like xp did. vista puts it to "WORKGROUP" while xp defaults to MSHOME so by defaults vista wont see the network. in the 'network and sharing center' go to the network discovery drop-down and the workgroup name can be changed there. i changed mine to MSHOME and my laptop drive popped right up.

The big thing I have had people run into when attempting to access files on a Vista Share drive is the extra password protected step Vista added. Disabling that usually fixes the Win.X ---> Vista Shared drive issues.
And as the previous poster added, check to make sure your Workgroups are the same.

i dont know if its a bug or not, but i just enter the password into the login feild, and leave the password box blank and it connects just fine. the two pc's are using the same user name though...

workgroups have zero to do with sharing files...only browsing (which will forever be broken on smaller networks)

From my XP computer, I could not access shared drives on my Vista computer (even though the drive was shared in Vista and visible on my XP computer).

Here's what worked for me:

On the Vista computer, click Start -> Computer
Right click on the drive you want to share
Click the Share tab and enable sharing (if you haven't already)
Now, click on the Security tab
Click Edit...then click Add
Enter the name "Everyone"...click OK to go back to the Security screen
Make sure the "Everyone" profile you just created is selected, then set permissions to Full Control, click OK

Now I can access the Vista shared drives on my XP computer.

There is No problem connecting and sharing between Win98 - Win2000 - Win XP - And Vista.

Each computer has its own capacity but within the capacity, there is No problem in Sharing Files and Printers.

Vista enhanced security eliminates Global Sharing of Drive C: and no more sharing through C$.

I.e. on the Vista computer the Sharing unit is a Folder.

However, this does not affect Vista capacity to see a whole Drive C: in a WinXP or other OS'.

In general, successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

Basic XP - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/filesharing.mspx

Advanced XP - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040

Vista - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx>

I actually had to turn Widows Firewall "ON" on the XP cpmputer to get home networking to work.

Click Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> ON
Make sure "Don't allow exceptions" is NOT checked
Click on the Exceptions tab and check "File & Print Sharing" and "UPnP Framework".

This opens up the ports for home networking in XP and the two computers should see each other (hopefully).

I also updated my LAN card driver and router firmware, but I don't think that really mattered.

Just go to here, and you need to install a software on Win XP to enable LLTD
Responder that allows Win XP to respond to Windows Vista.

http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVi...af-b063-4f50f5a77b291033.mspx?mfr=true

Also turn off any firewalls such as including Norton to see if that is also causing the issue.

This fixed my problem, thanks a bunch
Just for the record. This fix allows Win XP to appear on the little visual Diagram provided by Vista.

Sharing per-se should work even without it.

Same deal here.

Have 4 PC[s, 3 are XP and all see each other fine and can share folder and files fine.

Just got a laptop with Vista, turned on all the file sharing etc and get:

laptop-pc not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. etc etc.

I added everyone and you can see the machine but that message just pops up.

This has to be pissing a lot of people off.

In the past it took time to get used to the WinXP sharing, and now it would be deja vu all over again but it can work.

I'll try again when I get a chance. Just seems insane how they broke networking after all these years of finally got it working fairly well and easily.

hmm..well before I added this update to my XP machine neither PC could see each other. I added the update and Bam they saw each other immediately. I mean i watched the XP machine appear on my Vista machine right as it happend and this wasnt even the network map, it was the actual tab that lists connected devices on the network. And like I said the XP machine couldnt see the Vista machine before the update, so I think the Update does more than just update the Vista network Map. I think it allows Vista and XP to play nicely via Network Period.

The LLTD update did nothing on my XP machine. It still won't show up on the Vista "Network map"...which is what the update is supposed to fix!

Oh well...my Giga-bit network works great without it...

My XP machine doesnt show in the Vista map after the update either, the update did make my pc's find each other which is good enough for me.

First of all I would like to express my appreciation to those who contributed to this thread. I would not been able to connect my laptop without the information available on this forum.

As stated my laptop is link wireless to both printers on my network. However, when I turn off both computers and printers and later logon again (both printers turned on), I am unable to send anything to the printers even though the printer show on the laptop and the test print is in the queue. Do I have to reconnect each time I logon? Thank you

Environment:

Linksys WRT54G connected to modem.

Dell 8250 Pentium (desktop, XP spk 2) wired to router.
HP Laser IIP connected to parallel to desktop.
HP Inkjet 5150 usb connected to desktop.

HP Pavillon dv600 (laptop, Vista) wireless to router and printers.

Changing to new OS can be Good or somewhat of a pain.

Objectively Vista's core Network code and the Network's configuration menus are much better and work smoother.

New users that did not deal before with Networking find it much easier to configure Vista for Internet and LAB sharing.

Howvever, for many enthusiast (myself included), it is a mixed blessing at the beginning, I got so used to all my little routine, small bat files, and utilities that it is hard to get adjusted to a new thing that does not need some of my old Routine, some do not work, and some new one has to be developed.

So imagine that you live in turn of the 20th century and you have to switch from the Horse to the Car, after few weeks, you would really enjoy the New Car.

Basically, 95% of what a regular End-User needs to do (concerning Networking) is accessible from one Screen.

Right click on Tray Bar?s Network Icon and click on Network and Sharing Center.

http://www.ezlan.net/vista/vs-net-center.jpg

Investigate this Menu System, do not wait until there is trouble, and then under state of Anxiety the only thing that you can do is go online and Bad Mouth other people?s hard work.

As a second step, Start Windows Explorer drill down to Computer Local Disk C:

Drag to the desktop (or ant other comparably east to reach a link to C:

Double click on the link and you get the Drives folder structure.

Right Click on any allowed folder and click Share.

http://www.ezlan.net/vista/vs-share.jpg

The Sharing windows would open is and from it you can configure the Sharing.

I.e. between the Tray Bar icon and an easy link to Drive C: almost the entire Network needs cam be maintained.

Thanks Jack and everyone.

Finally got it going but not happy with it.

You have to click three different permissions boxes to get file sharing going and then it's special folders which is a pain.

Vista blows, it's really a step backwards. I am not surprised.
