XP x64

the bios sees 8 Gb of RAM, but XP 64 bit won't boot with 8 Gb installed. With 4 GB installed, it boots, but only sees 3.5 GB, as is said a 32 bit OS would. 3.4 Ghz Pentium D.

I think it might be your ram or your board. I say this becuase I am using xp x64 with 8gb of ram

exactly what i was going to say. i had to remap the memory on my p5be to see 4GB of memory.

Thank you for your input. I am not familiar with the term "memory remap" nor do I see a reference to it in my bios. Please educate me. Thanks again.

Is there anything relating to 'PAE' in the Bios? It does the same thing in that it redefines where the recognized 'barrier' of usable RAM is (if that makes sense, google it to find out more). You are using a 64bit OS so this shouldn't be needed, but It's worth a try.

I think you have to use that plus a 64 bit OS to make the whole setup work.

Please give us the name of your motherboard.

try it with 2GB of RAM and see what happens (try with different sticks each time, because one may be bad)

Or try running memtest and see if it recognizes all the ram....and it can test all four sticks for you while your there. If one fails, well then you'll have to start pulling/swapping to figure it all out. On my new Asus P5K motherboard there is a remap option and says to enable if using a 64bit OS only....sounds like you need both for it to work properly no?
