i burnt 2 boards (biostar m7ncd and ecs k7s5a) and don't know how?

first was the biostar... installed ram, vid card, and xp1800+. the board was installed inside a case with all the needed standoffs, no extra's. turned it on and the board started smoking around the cpu socket.

second was the k7s5a... same ram, vid card, and cpu. different psu and the board sitting outside the case on top of an anti-static bag this time. turned it on and the same thing happens, it burned almost at the same spot as the other board!!

using 2 different psu's kinda eliminates it as the culprit, and it's odd that it got toasted on almost the same spot on both boards!?

so, is it possible for a cpu to burn a motherboard?

It's probably dead, but take it out and visually inspect it, especially the underside with the pins. This is a shot in the dark, but their may be a piece of copper wiring or something electrically conductive shorting out some of the pins. Also check for very bent pins or missing pins.

Umm Antistatic bags only protect the components from static electricity if the component is inside the bag. The outside of the bag has a coating that attracts static electricity to itself rather than to the inside of the bag or the contents.

Still something certainly does seem wrong here but being that the board was sitting on the antistatic bag the outside of which is actually somewhat conductive I would have to discount the second failure as it could possibly have been due to operator error.
