You would be able to get a modest OC with the retail set-up, I'm conservatively guessing at least 300mhz to get it to 2400+ levels. The problem lies in there is no guarantee the retail package will contain a T-bred B. The nature of retail, packaging, shelf-life, supply, and demand all factor into slower inventory turn over, which means you are at the mercy of a number of factors (like AMD still retail packing Palomino's to the inventory on-hand at the retailer) that translate into a game of CPU roulette. Newegg and PCnut are the only two resellers that are even "guaranteeing" T-bred B by listing the OPN number and core code on the chip.

If you are thinking about OCing at all, my advice would be to purchase the 1 year warranty, take the extra $10 or so you saved, and invest it in a good $30-ish dollar cooler that will give you some OCing headroom. With a variable speed fan, you will easily be able to balance performance and noise level.

My friend bought one yesterday and had it shipped overnight. It runs at 2400mhz on air, 1.8v.

I ordered one to replace my 2400+ - it is a bad stepping, it needs 1.8v to reach 2100 mhz stable.

HI ALL

Its hard to believe just 3 weeks ago there were companies selling the retail 2100+ for 96 bucks. With the economy bad and xmas past you'd think these prices would be falling.

Pelikan, are you saying that you ordered a TBred B XP2100+ from Newegg and it's no good? If so, when did you receive the CPU, what stepping is on the chip (eg. AIUHB) and what date (eg. 0248)?

Thanks!

No, sorry I wasn't clear. My 2400+, not from NewEgg, is a bad stepping. So I ordered a 2100+ from NewEgg to replace it. It's funny to replace a 2400+ with a 2100+, but whatever works!

I am in bad need of a new proc as my Duron 650@866 is killing my computer. I am currently running a regular old ECS K7S5A. I am pretty sure my board would require a BIOS flash to use this chip, but will it work after the flash?

Almost forgot, do they have an overclocker friendly BIOS for the K7S5A?

Is there any easy way to figure that out? I think it was the one that came with the board when i bought it quite a while ago, but its possible I may have flashed it once already.

Just checked using Norton System Info and it does indeed say V1.00 9/11/01, and that is the original I believe since I remember because it just happens to be 9/11

Hmm, do i really need this, I am seriously considering getting a shuttle SN41G2, and it prolly woudln't be a great idea to put this proc in the shuttle and overclock it. Decisions decisions.

Coolred, is it an Award or AMI BIOS? Do you know which version of the board it is? What is the date on bootup in POST?

I am 98% sure its and AMI the date of the BIOS is 9/11/01 as i said in the previous post and it is version 1.00, so i think it is the original BIOS that came on the board.

Considering palomino 2100+ will overclock to about 1.9Ghz max, and the TBred-B's will clock to at least 2.1Ghz, and usually around 2.3-2.4, right there is a XP 2900+ - 3000+, so is it really "ripping us off"? You decide

Anyone bought the retail version? My coworker is gonna place an order and we wanna be sure the retail version is a Tbredb as he wants the 3 yr warranty, if not then I'll suggest he get the oem one. TIA.

I am about to jump on this, now that i found out you can safely overlcok in one of those little shuttle computers. But until i get the shuttle this will go in my main rig. I currentlly have the Taisol with the copper bottom, can't remember the model number, will this cool this processor at least at stock speed? Also I am assuming I will need to pick up some CPU grease or whatever, like artic silver right? What about a shim are those needed or not.
