Hullo I already have

ASUS KT600
SAMSUNG 512 DDR400
80GB WD
ATI-built AIW Radeon 9000 Pro

I am getting a XP2400 cpu I ordered yesturday...I am wondering with my Volcano 7+ how fast can I overclock it to....and what core do u think it could be? SHouls I first drop multiplier and increase fsb to 166 or just play with multiplier first...?

There is a long regimen of overclocking procedures to follow. By the time you are done, your beard will be gray, your wallet will be empty and your computer will might be faster.

You have certified "fast" ram. I would leap immediately to the faster bus speed and lower the multiplier. I don't have a lot of time to devote to experiments. That's what college kids are for.

How fast are you wanting to go? Max OC? You'll probably want to burn it in first, but if you don't 190x11.5@1.7V is a good starting point. That's going to give you 2185mhz, or 2.185Ghz, and I haven't seen a 2400 yet that won't do around 2.2Ghz. My 2400 T-bred goes up to 2.4Ghz@1.80V (around 1.78-1.79 actual) Make sure to use some good thermal compound, especially if you're gonna be overclocking.

Sorry man, the multiplier is locked on the new T-breds. I have a new 2400+ myself and I can´t go above 153 mhz fsb (2300mhz).

i have a 2400 running @ 217x10, @ 1.725. It's not breaking the 2200 mark for me though, seems the mobo won't let it boot if i try say 200x11, maybe i'll play around w/ it a bit more though. I found what worked best for me was getting the computer to boot at 166x10, run my ram @ 166 as well, and then use CPUid's CGEN program to raise the FSB to 217 from within windows. It works quite well, is stable, and fast though, so maybe I won't play around anymore....... yeah whatever.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that was using a Volcano 7+ too.

I only need to know one thing now....no more.....will I be able to knock the multiplier down to 12.5 or will the locked multiplier prevent me from doing so...

Okay, locked, on a cpu, means "not able to get into so you can change", just like a locked door means you can't get into the house. Even if it's locked though, just up the fsb. That makes much more difference, anyway-- how high your fsb runs. I personally would start with 1.7V on your vcore, but that's up to you, although I wouldn't go any higher than 1.8. Up to 1.8 seems to be quite safe for them.

I hear that the locked Bartons will actually let you change the multiplier on the bios "screen", but it either doesn't write it to the cmos (the bios's memory), or it somehow gets changed when Windows boots, so you'll need to download something that check's your cpu speed, to be able to tell if it's a locked chip or not. Clockgen works very well for me, also. Here's the link: ClockGen. It allows you to change your fsb from Windows, along with telling you how fast your cpu is running, and what the fsb is at the moment.

The multiplier is locked at 15, and you can´t pin mod it.

This does nothing, there's nothing that proves this does anything other than give you peace of mind.
locked, on a cpu, means "not able to get into so you can change",
Not always... T-Bred A's have always been considered "locked" because you couldn't change the multiplier unless you had a motherboard that was capable of ignoring the CPU's bridges and setting it at whatever you wanted.
Recently, T-Bred B's and Bartons have been "locked" at 12.5 or below, and you needed a motherboard with a 5th multiplier bit to raise it beyond that, or you had to physically modify the CPU.
Most recently, XP2500's have been locked and not even modifying the bridges on the CPU can change the multiplier... I'm not sure how many other processors that has extended to, but I believe it's just the XP2500 since everyone has been buying those and overclocking to the speed of XP2800, XP3200 and even higher and all AMD was selling was XP2500's.
you'll need to download something that check's your cpu speed, to be able to tell if it's a locked chip or not.
You don't NEED to... you can just look at the CPU speed during the POST.

A better program for just looking at the speed is CPUZ or WCPUID.

I have all three, and ClockGen gives the same speed as the others. CPU-Z gives ½mhz higher reading than the other 2 do, which, I suppose means that just for "looking at the speed", WCPUID or Clockgen are better.

No, XP 2400+ is locked the same way as the Barton, and you can´t unlock it with a pin mod, I´ve tried it myself.
I have an Abit NF7-S v2.0 so I know the motherboard can´t unlock it.
The multiplier is set at 15x since it has a 133mhz fsb (133*15=2000).

2400s locked? Hmmm...I bought one recently and popped it in my KG7, set multiplier to 'above 13'. It came up at 2000MHz, so I figured it was indeed locked at 15x. I've just upgraded to an A7N8X deluxe, and I can set the multiplier to whatever I want. I'm currently running it at <checks CPUid> 13x166, shows up as a 2700+.

So is it locked, or not?

Well, mine is locked. Maybe you got lucky, or I got unlucky, who knows?

It's not... the KG7 probably can't change the multiplier no matter what.

Yes (may also be locked, I haven't seen a clear answer), and yes.

Yeah, your motherboard should support that CPU.
2600+ has a much lower multiplier then 2400+, so you can raise the FSB alot even though it´s locked.
