I'm considering upgrading to an XP2500... I found one online for about $130 shipped... was just curious... how well do the overclock? And is the multiplier unlocked? I have a KT400 chipset.

Nobody has a personal experience with overclocking an XP2500 that they'd share with everyone?

Barton 2500+
Abit NF7-S
2x256 GeIL PC3500

10x220 = 2200MHz

I had to cut L12 Bridge on the CPU to overclock FSB.

10.5 x 200FSB = 2100. No voltage increase or special cooling, just change the settings on an nForce2 board.
It runs stable at 2150, and it boots to windows at 2200 but locks up in prime95 after a minute or two.

All this is with no voltage increases and TT Volcano 9 cooling.

My 2500 on an Abit Nforce2 board did 2250mhz at 1.8vCore. Not impressed at all. I am now using an XP2100 B 0302 that runs at 14 x 172 or 2403mhz at 1.75. Sweet.

Yah, I'm hoping for a later stepping production week tho. Athlon's age like fine wine, and only get better as time passes by. First-run chips don't do as well, but they should get better and better as AMD ramps up for 3200+.

Sorry The only reason I'm making this upgrade is b/c the 1700+ I ordered from NE for my bro didn't work out. I'm like his tech support, he brings his machine to my place and I upgrade his stuff for next to nothing. :| He's getting my 2100+ and my rev. 1.4 A7N8X-DLX...after I hot flash the BIOS :Q Newegg wouldn't take it back for RMA b/c I AS Epoxied a bunch of stuff on it. No biggy though, I got a Rev. 2.0 now that does 200MHz no sweat (and a helluva lot cooler!!! no extra cooling needed!!!) so I'm happy.

I'm really looking to just hit mid 2300's; I'm probably gearing up for a let-down compared to my current 2100+, but I didn't want to take another chance (and restocking) on a 1700+ now that there's a very high chance of getting a T-bred A from NE. I refuse to pay more $30 more Excaliber for a guaranteed stepping, plus its not as fun w/out the gamble.

How did it compare in benchmarks though? AMD users are some of the last people who need to be told that a higher clock speed doesn't necessarily translate to better performance. Check the benchmarks... P4's rarely can even keep up with an Athlon XP of equal clock speed. Then take a look at Macs... even more efficient than AMD.

One thing that shouldn't be understated is the extra cache. From my experience, it translates into a real increase in how fast it "feels" as I use the computer.

I've been really thrilled with my performance gain. With the 200mhz FSB and the extra on-chip cache, I can tell a serious difference from my XP 2000+. I also see a real difference in cpu-intensive games (like Jedi Knight) as you might expect, but I think I'm actually more pleased about the "everyday use" speed increase.

Yep, no doubt, the Barton really shines in office/daily useage apps. The other area, as you mentioned is in gaming. That's why I'm hoping for an equal overclock to ~2300MHz, since I don't think the T-bred B/Barton core will be able to ramp too much higher in its current form. If I can get equal clockspeeds to my T-bred B, the 5-10% performance boost in certain apps will be nice.

I think I could get speeds of 2300 if I tried hard enough (increased voltage, improved HS/Fan, improved case temps/air flow). I'm satisfied with it right now, though, so I leave it at 2100.

its odd that so many t bred a's are coming out of newegg. I thought they got rid of all of those. Lol chizow, ur brother is going to own a piece of anandtech history. That was the very first 2100 t bred b owned on this site. O well, maybe next time lol. I am getting board of my palimino. These things are not fun to overclock.

When I get my XP2500 I'll be selling my XP1700 T-Bred A... right now I have it running at 1700 Mhz... 136x12.5 @ 1.6 volts. It'll go higher I'm sure, but I can't increase voltage past 1.6 volts, and can't get the FSB very high and keep it stable... I don't think there's a PCI lock on this motherboard (crappy MSI motherboard and Generic PC2100 RAM)

I got my 2500+ yesterday so I haven't had time to do much testing yet, but the main bottleneck in my system is the memory. I'm running 2x512MB TwinMOS PC2700 CAS2.5, but they report no errors in Memtest86 when clocked at 2-2-3-7 at 360MHz. This was faster than 2-2-3-6, which also worked fine, btw.

Regarding the CPU I could bump the multiplier to 12.5 (x180) with no vcore change and very modest cooling. It stayed well below 50 degrees celcius even with full CPU load for hours. However, prime95 gave errors after about an hour and upping the vcore to 1.75 didn't fix it. I think this might have to do with memory, so right now I'm running stress testing with 175x12.5 (giving 45 degrees celcius for the CPU under load). If it works ok I'll give 175x13 a shot, but that is 2275MHz and without a vcore change it'll most likely give errors right away. I'll probably stay at 175x12.5 but with a lower CPU fan speed (thank you SpeedFan) to get the system as quiet as possible.

And btw, my 2500+ was completely unlocked and I can access ALL multipliers (even above 12.5). I'm using an A7N8X Deluxe with the 1003 BIOS.

I'll probably make a post with more extensive testing results and system specs in a few days.

EDIT 5 MINUTES LATER: No I can NOT use the multipliers above 12.5 it seems. I can select them allright but they work as with other Athlon XPs: 13 gives x5, 13.5 gives x5.5 and so forth. I guess the unlocking has to be done in hardware after all.

If you really want to have to upgrade, you could just cause your CPU fan to pop off, thus causing your CPU to fry. At least that's what I did..

I had just bought a new Thermaltake Volcano 11 Xaser Edition. Installed it normally on my Athlon XP 1800+. It was going for a little less than a mintue and the left-side bracket popped off. The only conclusion I came to is that I had the RPMs set too high on the controller, and the vibration caused slippage in the bracket.

Anyway, I got my new Athlon XP 2400+ (Tbred B) yesterday and it runs nicely.

Those things don't just "pop off" ... it must have not been installed properly... either that or it was a cheap heatsink and the bracket was too big and didn't seat properly and apply the correct amount of pressure to keep it on there.

I have managed to get my Barton 2500+ upto 2545Ghz. (221x11.5).

I have an Abit NF7-S mobo - once i have done a few mobo mods im hoping to hit 2.7+

salamanzer: what cooling (both chassis and CPU) and what memory are you using? whats the CPU temp under load? those are very imperssive numbers. have you made sure it's really stable?

Yep - its stable alright

The core temp is approx 5oC (Vapochill) - my memory is maxing out at the moment - so i am going to do a VDD mod and hopefully push the memory upto 250Mhz (500DDR). I will get some proper cooling for the North and South bridge

I would like to hit 2.8GHz with the Barton - its a shame they are not like the TBred B's, which i have clocked at 2812 (225 x 12.5 stable).

At 2545 - its happy running sandra burn-in @100% - and i played c&c generals for a few hours LOL the other day

Too see my oc stats follow this link

Figured it was something extravagant.

You don't have the stepping handy do ya? I'll have mine tomorrow, hoping for a week 12 or later......
