Do you have a VIA chipset? If so be sure you are using the latest 4in1 drivers, as well as the latest ATI drivers, I seem to recall they used to have a separate driver set for VIA-based systems because there was a conflict with the MVP3 chipset or something.

Download the latest ALI chipset drivers and try an older ATI driver (if you are already using the most current):

Rage128 Driver Archive

The Rage128 has always had problems with Super 7 platforms, especially VIA. I've never used an ALI chipset so I can't comment, but you might look around the tweak sites or newsgroups pertinent to your mainboard to find help.

after 2 , two hour downloads. and a link to drivers for another chipset, (i clicked on my chipset and it sent me to a d/l for another c/s. ) installed everything including directx8.1(ati says i have to have it) and you can't uninstall it. i'm at my wit's end. this d--m card won't work with my k6-2 config. is there a law against emptying 2 clips from a 9 mil into a mobo?? if there is, let me know before i pull the trigger!! now that my ranting is done. does anybody have any ideas as to make this d--m card work ? jer

I remember people having similar trouble with some ATI and nVidia cards because of one or more of the following:

- The monitor is not configured or detected properly
- The person did not completely uninstall/remove their old video card drivers (resulting in a mix of old and new driver files)
- The person did not change their Adapter Type to Standard Display Adapter (VGA) and then restart before installing the new video card and drivers.

Try disabling AGP 2x in your BIOS. That's what I had to do in order to get a TNT2 working on a couple VIA Super 7 systems.

thanks for all your help tc, but just out of curiosity what does the agp setting have to do with a pci card? could it be getting crossed up in the bios or something like that? lmk, jer

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize this was a PCI card, you never specified so I presumed it was an AGP.

I remember there being a few BIOS settings on Super 7 boards that would some times affect PCI video cards, but its been a while since I've messed with an old system like that: Read Around Write, Write Cache Pipeline, and a couple others. This was on VIA chipsets, I've never used an ALI chipset.

For what its worth, I built a system for a friend about 4 years ago, it used an i430TX PCI chipset and an AMD K6-2. Later, he wanted a better video card, so we installed a Xpert128 PCI and it worked fine on that system. Then he wanted a new mobo and faster CPU, so we installed a Soltek VIA 693x based board, a 733MHz Pentium III and more RAM. The Xpert128 worked fine on that combo, too. Win95C > Win98 > Win98SE.

I have an ATI Xpert 128 PCI card for the last year or so in an ALI mobo with ALI chipset and have had no problems per se with the card.I'm using the drivers from the install cd which are 4.12.6292 and never felt compelled(maybe I should and don't know what I'm missing) to download newer versions from ATI's website or other one's from rage underground website. The card is optimized to run in 32 bit color and mine is at 1024x 768x32bpp color.Basically I just followed the install instructions (and printed out the info to refer to),cleaned out the old drivers and disabled the onboard old ATI drivers in Device Manager even though the insertion of a video card automatically disables(supposedly) the onboard video (which was AGP).I do remember that this card didn't give as many refresh rate options as the old rage pro but I got it to run "optimum" which is exactly what I use(85 HZ)so maybe I lucked out here.If not then probably Rage 128 Tweaker would fix it.Can't remember any more at the moment .Good luck . helikon

Jer 22, When I mentioned that the card is optimized for 32 bit color I don't mean to imply that it worked any better. It's just that the image was sharper and colors better(not by a great amount). If anything it was a little snappier in 16 bpp color and no problem running full hardware acceleration in either mode.Just didn't want to throw you a curve ball.Wish I knew more and could help. helikon
