Well, it certainly is cheaper, but I would still rather have a MacBook Pro than an XPS. The build quality on the XPS has improved (or so I have heard) but i have never been that impressed with Dell builds. I have known too many people with newer Dells that have any number of aging issues, along with just evidence of shoddy workmanship.

Were you and I speccing the systems differently though? After I configured it to match, it wasn't that much cheaper (Added bluetooth, wireless n, 8600m, faster processor) The dell has the higher res screen, and more RAM, but if you want to drop 4GB into the machine it is the same cost either way (newegg all the way ).

I'm trying to justify buying a new MBP but this laptop for this price with a THREE year warranty (Dell may be a lot of things but in my experience their warranty service can't be beat) I just can't seem to do it.

well the only thing is.. the system you configured doesnt exactly match up identically with the MBP

in order to get the same specs you need to add a few more hundred, which would bring it closer to the MBP price

I'm no Dell apologist or Anti Apple nutjob but even if you did spec it out more, the warranty is what gets ya. How much is an Apple Care warranty for three years?

Might want to check out a thread I made about my annoyances with the m1530. Personally, for the price I paid for it, I feel kind of ripped off with some of the poor components from the unresponsive touchpad, the 100 Base-T lan (wtf?), no option for LED back-lit screen, horrible media controls, etc.

Not bad, but I'd rather get a Lenovo ThinkPad T series for that price instead. They're built better, and you still get them with XP pre-installed.

Man, i didn't even know that it didn't have gigabit. That costs what? $0.003 more to make over 10/100?

My screen most certainly is not back-lit nor was there an option on Dell's Business section or Dell's Consumer section for the m1530 to have one... unless I misunderstood an option.

I'm wondering if it's because I took the Dell wireless adapter instead of the Intel Wireless-N adapter, but I don't think that should've mattered. I chose G because it saved $50 and I only have a wireless G router anyway. But I do have a gigabit network at home and the fact that one of the purposes of my laptop was to decode h.264 videos, I expected a Gig-E NIC so I could transfer the files faster, but now it takes longer to transfer them .

He was referring to 15.4" MacBook Pro's, not commenting on Dell's options. Honest mistake.
Dell is supposed to release an LED option and I'm hoping they release it soon along with the option for 45nm cpu's. Currently only the m1330 has them

I KNOW I have specced a 1530 with an LED backlight, about 4 weeks ago. At the time I was trying to convince my friend's gf not to buy a Mac. Well, having experienced Macs more since then, I have to say that I'd buy a Macbook Pro too. It's unbelievable how OSX just works, and works well-- it's not just that it's easier to use for nubs. For $1600 with developer discount which isn't hard to get, you'd be a fool to buy a Vista ridden Dell mess.

Ahh using acronyms that I'm not used to... I wondered what the MBP meant haha.

I went and spec'd one out again the other day after reading this thread and there were even less monitor options. In fact, the only option is the one that I have in mine, the 15.4 TruBrite (or whatever they call it) screen (1680x1050 resolution). I saw no LED back-lit option and I know mine isn't (it's pretty darned easy to tell).

I was clearly misinformed earlier in this thread, but from looking at how Dell runs things in the past, they are probably having supply issues. If certain parts cannot be obtained fast enough, the remove the option to prevent further back-ups and will only return the missing options once the supply issues have cleared up.

That's quite possible as they had I believe 3 screen options when I built mine and now there's only 1, which doesn't necessarily make sense. It seems there's another wireless option as well (an Intel wireless-g).
