3.45GHz on stock volts (1.1v), and 4.2GHz on 1.425v (according to BIOS), both air cooled.

Not bad. Not the best I've seen, but not bad at all.

I don't think 4.2 on 1.425 is that special. An extra 500mhz only required 1.47 for his chip! If at 4.2 it already needed 1.425, there is no way it would do 4.7 at 1.47.

HT was OFF.

So i dont call that a truely real OC.

:X

Try it with HT on.

I havent seen a i5 with HT ON break 4.2ghz... and most of them seem to have problems breaking 4ghz even.

Obviously not 24/7 voltages and stability but pretty impressive. With watercooling, will we see 4.5+ghz 24/7 clocks perhaps?

mmmm.... not without HT ON.

Im at 4.4ghz with 1.388vcore with HT ON as my 24/7.

I really dont think that i5 can keep up with an i7 once HT is on.

it's an i5, so HT is always off. No one has witnessed an i5 at any frequency with HT on because it's not possible. i5 is a 4C/4T device. The PCIe controller is the limiting factor with i5, not HT.

Now that more and more i5 cases can be taken into consideration, they really aren't as bad as anand's review made them out to be. Voltages could be lower, though.

Not it can't keep up outside of games. The i5 is the budget 1156 cpu which lacks HT. Certainly a good replacement for Q6600/Q9550s of the day for $160 at Microcenter!

For most people going from a dual core to a quad core, the i5 is perfect.

Also, are you doing 4.4ghz on a $70 air cooler? on a $139.99 motherboard with a $160 cpu? Probably not

There is no HT on an i5 750...

Nice OC, though i wish he'd show max stable OC...

He did 30 min Prime 95 at 4.2ghz, 1.425 BIOS Vcore (1.392 CPU-Z) with 1600rpm fans.

nice!

i notice he was able to get x21 multiplier on his i5 using the gigabyte board. my ASUS P7P55D pro can only keep a x20 multiplier

Is there still an issue with x20 multiplier? I like even numbers and would like to have a 750 or a 860 @4.0GHz (20x200) w/ 8GB of DDR3-1600. (or DDR3-2000) Uncore frequency 3.2GHz or 4.0GHz. That Gigabyte board looks good, btw.

oh yeah thats right..

they decided to give it an i7 tag and call it a 860.

Yeah i keep thinking of the 860 when people mention i5... I think its because there both on LGA1156.. :\

Iim sure an 860 could do this without HT on also.
All my D0 i7's could probably do this @ the same or lower voltage as well with HT OFF.

The average D0 920 will do 4ghz with like 1.25-1.325vcore...
Thats with HT ON also.

If you guys honestly ask me, i dont think the very small difference in price is worth merit on an i5 system vs a X58 system.

Unless your going low tier i5.
If it was me again, i would pick a PHII system over it, because of the bigger bandwidth to video cards.

But this is my personal opinion.

Set EIST to Auto / Enabled and you should get the extra multiplier.

Remember PH2 is only superior when paired with NV graphics cards. With ATI cards, Core i7 is competitive. From Anandtech writeup, NV cards do perform better on the Phenom II setup. Outside of games though PH2 is not competitive with 8 threaded i7s.

In regard to 16x/16x vs. 8x/8x, check out these results:
5870 x8 is within 2% of 5870 x16 at 2560x1600

And finally, D0s being able to run at 4.0ghz at lower voltage is a result of them lacking the PCIe controller found on the 1156 cpu. Don't forget that Core i7 860 is rated to operate at both a higher temperature and a higher voltage compared to the 920 D0. Therefore, it still runs within spec at 1.40V compared to the Core i7 920, which is out of spec.

i7 920 D0 = max Vcore 1.375V @ 67.9*C
i7 860 B1 = max Vcore 1.400V @ 72.7*C
