XVID codec

Ug, I HATE XVID!!!

Has anyone had any luck with this codec at all? EVERY SINGLE VERSION of XVID that I have tried to use has had one of the following problems:

1. The video display is nothing but green blobs
2. The codec causes media player (or any other player I have tried) to crash CONSTANTLY

I downloaded some XVID encoded movies recently, and tried plaing them. I downloaded and installed XVID, double clicked the movie, media player loads up, and bam... I get a message saying that media player has caused an error and needs to be restarted. This happens 5 times in a row, on the 6th time the movie actually started to play...

But, then I minimized the window, and media player crashed again. I have never had media player crash while playing ANY non XVID movies such as DIVX, mpeg1+2, indeo, or anything else.

Also, since IE previews videos in the preview plane, whenever I click on an XVID movie in IE, i get an error saying that IE has crashed (memory can't be 'read' or something).

This has happened WITH EVERY VERSION OF XVID I HAVE EVER USED, and on ALL 6 PCS I have. I have tried it on win98, ME, 2k, and XP, with the same problems happening on every system.

Does anyone know of a STABLE version of XVID that wont crash my machine every time I try to watch a movie?

Also, are there any usefull sites about this damn codec? xvid.org apparently has something against posting binaries, so all you can get from them is source code...

DML1001, I had that exact same problem. Green blobs all over the place. I was using Nimo's codec pack.

Try to find a copy of SLD CODEC PACK online. If you type it into google, the first page that comes up is their home page. But I tried loading up their homepage last week and it didn't, so maybe they moved.

If you can get a copy of that codec pack, you can watch ANYTHING (xvid, divx, etc, etc) and it's better than Nimo's. Make sure you uninstall the xvid and divx, etc, etc codecs before you isntall SLD.

Never ever use Nimo's Codec pack. Its a haphazard array of various codecs that are bundled together with little thought given to its organization. If you're lucky, it just won't work, if you're unlucky, it can cause a system so unstable that you'll have to reinstall your OS.

Have weird video artifacts usually means that you have too many codecs installed and your system is using the wrong one. If you're not encoding, I would suggest uninstalling all your codecs(including divx) and using ffdshow-alpha for almost all your video watching needs. Its a DirectShow filter that supports xvid, divx and other major codecs, and it offers some interesting and useful post processing options that can vastly improve your video quality.

This is simply due to a bad download of the Divx codec - I had this problem and one short google search later had the answer.

I was about driven nuts by it too - if you need the correct 425kb file just PM me and I'll e-mail it to you

There seems to be two different flavours of the Xvid codec floating around. One makes everything green as you found out

Flush out all the codecs you have and just install ffdshow & ac3 filters and you should be set.

Yeah, ffdshow and AC3filter are the only things you need to have to watch pretty much every video you could dream of.

Those are the only things I have installed on my computers and nothing hasn't played yet (other than crappy QT and Real stuff...but most of the time they're not worth worrying about watching)

How fast is ffdshow? As I noiced that divs 5.x codecs run rather slow. They skip slowly and often times my video just jumps and has slight pauses at small intervals and it is very anoying. This never happened with older divx versions?

Thanks

Divx is just an unlicensed ripoff of MS-MPEG4v2.

Microsoft no longer supports MPEG4v2 (all they do now is WMV and other, proprietary streaming MediaPlayer codecs). This is why Divx was born.

Divx is also proprietary, owned by ?Divx Inc? If you use it (theoretically) you're supposed to pay .. whoever... for it.

Xvid is a brand new, FREE open-source codec, that's a lot better than MSMPEG to boot.

If you use ffdshow you'll have no problems.

If you use Nimo or one of the other lousy hacked up bundled packs of crap, we cannot help you...

I installsed the latest version of ffdshow to test it out. And the quality is horable. Files have far more pixilation and while with divx or xvid the picture is crisp and clean while with ffdshow the picture is bad and the collors are horable and light. It is like watching an old 8 mm movie compared to a DVD. Is there any way to fix the quality and the color?

Thanks

You really don't need anything other than Nimo and the correct Xvid codec download.

I downloaded ffdshow just in case my problem continued - if you are getting the green screen effects find another Xvid codec download - there seems to be different versions floating around. I've yet to install ffdshow as everything works fine

PM me with e-mail address for the correct Xvid codec file if you are getting nowhere.

Did you uninstall all the rest of the crud? All you need is ffdshow so don't confuse it with other codecs, if not ffdshow may not be the one engaged when you're viewing the files.

There isn't any better than ffdshow, you must have some other piece of crap installed.

If you use Nimo or one of the other lousy hacked up bundled packs of crap, we cannot help you...

Or, you have some driver/hardware problems.

Like I said, install the latest ffdshow alpha. The older ones will work for 95% of the Xvid files out there, but some newer encodes it seems need the alpha.

One computer only runs the latest ffdirectshow, another has divx and xvid and the rest. I played an identical file on both and the one iwth divx looks crisp vivid and just beautifull. The ffdirect show has color problems. I logered the gama to 92 and raised the hue 15 points and now it is more or less watchable but it is still off. Divx feels like watching a clean coat of paint on a new car. If you sand paper it so it would not be so smoth and vivid you might get what the ffdirect show looks like. I noticed that there is to much green in the wrond places. This is not an encoder as it is light. Collors that should be white apear in grean. If I move the hue farther then the whites become more red but I can't get then to the normal colors. Also I need to increase contrast and saturation the picture gets to bright and the collors get further messed up.

And I just found some smaller divx files that crash the player when played.

Edit, and the files it does play it seems to play very slowly with the slowdowns and jumps I mentioned happened with divx 5, even though CPU usage is under 10%.

The average schmuck should just use fddshow. XVID should certainly only be used for encoding and then only if you have a penchant for chronically beta software, but also of the quasi-legal open source variety. Codec packs should be avoided like the monkey sars. While the goals of projects like XVID are admirable, the truth is that it cannot offer the reliablity, uniformity and quality control of DivX. It is unfortunate that some XVID encoded movies available do not decode correctly with DivX because otherwise it would be all you need. But that is where fddshow comes in (personally, I only use it to decode XVID).
