<< Is there a reason why the yamaha drives are being blown out like that. Makes no sense. Other 16X writers are still going above $100 easy like Plextors. Are there problems with this drive? Makes me wonder... >>

I have heard many bad things about Yamaha CD-RW drives, enough to keep me from ever buying one. I have no idea if they are still as bad as their reputation suggests. Having said all of this, I happen to own an Acer which is really a Phillips which also has a bad reputation (not as bad as Yamaha) and it's about 1.5 years old and still works OK.

<< You guys are hammering the phones on the Staples located near City Hall (NYC)! It's been busy for 10 mins! It's quite a walk from where I'm at so I need to know if they have it in stock so I don't waste my lunch hour. Has anyone called there? (NYC >>

Don't waste your time near City Hall. No Staples has the burner in stock.

In case those who don't know, this is a very nosiy burner, unstable, and without burnproof. However, it has 8mb buffer. I sold mine to my co-worker. I only paid $7.70 + tax for theburner.

I didn't notice anymore noise than my Sony 10x, and have not had any problems burning. I am using cheap Prime Peripheral 12x cdr's burning at 16x and haven't made a coaster yet after about 10+ burns. As far as I can tell there does seem to be some bad reviews on this CDRW but it looks as if the people may have bad drives. I am using Nero 5.5 and it works great!

Yamaha 16x writing/10x re-writing/40x reading
Note that according to the manual, you must have at least PII at 300mhz with a fast HD in order to be able to enjoy the drive. If not you will probably get poor performance. We also changed the test pc configuration from previous tests and for comparison reasons we re-measured all previous tested drives in order to have a clear view of the competition.

Positive
- 8MB of Buffer
- Very stable when using proper software
- Best DATA reading performance around
- Best DAE ripping performance around
- Very good CloneCD reading performance
- Supports DAO-RAW
- Build-in protection for low quality media (lowers auto writing speed)
- Supports (even partial) HS RW standard
- Supports CD-Text
- Supports Overburning (write up to 89mins)
- Good price

Negative
- Not true 10x re-write drive
- Failed to read 10x HS RW written media
- Bad packet writing performance
- You need fast PC for enjoy it!
- Noise when reading at max speed
- Scarce now @ B&Ms

>>>Well if ya wanna double/triple your money right now give me a PM<<<

HansHurt: I have an extra burner sitting here in a closed box. Lemme know if you're interested, and how much you're willing to pay.

I picked up 2 of these drives in the New York City area yesterday. The Yamaha 16x works just fine on my Macintosh, and is barely louder than the Sony 8x burner that it replaced. Just under 5 minutes to burn an audio CD...this thing FLIES on ripping, and is very fast and stable overall in my opinion. No complaints here

Commerce, Alhambra and Cerritos out of stock. I called the latter two and they told me they didn't carry them any more. They instead have the new 20X for a retail price of $249.99.

I don't see where that $10 of $40 is. Is it one of the printables? I'm really not this stupid, I just play someone this stupid on the boards....

Any help would be appreciated. I don't even know if my local staples has any, but the fingers can always be crossed, right?

Checked about 7 stores in Southern California by phone - all out of stock.

This one looks like a wild goose chase.

<< Anybody checked atlanta area already? I hate to swamp em... they don't how to handle it. >>

Yeah. The Staples near North Point Mall said they didn't have any. I picked up the last in the Suwanee store on PeachTree Parkway. After I found one I stopped looking.

Burners are becoming like razors.......the unit is cheap but the refills are expensive. Anyone heard anymore about the price of CDR media going up? I remeber a story about the price going to be 3 - 4 times more than now this summer....but all I see is prices falling.

IMHO this was a bunch of hype by the suppliers & manufacturers to inflate media prices back to the level of "the good old days".

$0.40-0.60 brand-name media is out there, but it's collecting dust on the shelves. With Fry's and others selling media at $0.10-0.20 every few weeks, I'm thinking that most people have lowered their standards and are stocking up on the cheap stuff when they can find it.
