The only beers normal bars sell is the American's, Newcastles, Guinness, all the poular stuff. That's not what everyone here calls real beer. Real beer to people here is only Micro's.

Not necessarily, but I do think it varies an enormous amount by location. For example, I was born and raised in Portland, OR (where I still live), a city that boasts the most microbreweries of any city in the world. It is impossible to find a bar, market or liquor store that sells beer but does NOT stock local microbrews; at the very least, you'll find Widmer Hefeweizen. The local brewing industry is so large in Portland that some are as ubiquitous as the macros.

I also spent a few months living in Springfield, MA. The culture was completely different; Sam Adams was widespread (obviously), but there was little outside of that and European macros (Heineken and Guinness) to challenge the domestic macros. You'd have to go to a specialty liquor store to find any microbrews, despite a healthy number of microbreweries in New England. I have an easier time finding some New England micros in Portland than I did in Springfield.

So geographic location is important to consider. What is "normal" for LA is not necessarily normal for the rest of the country. I know I've been spoiled by the abundance of microbrews available in Beertown; I wouldn't expect everyone else to have enjoyed the same opportunities to sample such a wide variety of beer styles in their hometowns.

why pound a case of coors when you can enjoy the taste of 3-4 finely crafted microbrews ?

Here is the way it goes down with a beer queer. Most of us don't invite these types out anyway....

On the way there they proceed to mention a half dozen beers most in the car have never heard about...they go into some drivel about body and the flavor. Wonder if the temp will be just right.

We get there and the waitress comes over, 9 out of the 10 of us order up and she gets them just fine. Then comes beer queer trying to order his Fuzzy Ass Crack IPA by further confusing her and ordering it as a FAC on Draft.

Now we get to spend the next 5 mins with him trying to explain what he wants. Then he goes through another 5-6 beers with the final one the waitress thinking they have. She finally takes the orders to the bar.

2 mins later she comes back and says the "Ass Sex with A Pig IPA" is only in a bottle, they don't have it on draft.

Beer queer commits seppuku with a steak knife.

The bar cheers!

I enjoy the Sam Adam's Seasonals cus some bars actually carry them. I've gone to TGIFriday's and they carry Sam Adam's Seasonal beers. I was surprised and that's all I drank.

american ale is actually very decent. props to inbev for providing that recipe! it's a good go-to desperation beer if you are at some huge chain that has a weak selection

There is a place (I think a national chain) called the Yardhouse here...hundreds of beers. There have been a few others too that have a good 100 or so different brews available.

My stories are based on going to these types of places. We have been out with some people that got all in a huff because they thought there was nothing there that they could drink once they found out their beer was not available or the dreaded "WHAT DO YOU MEAN ONLY IN A BOTTLE!?!?!WHY NOT ON DRAFT"...bonus points for those that say they should take Bud or Coors, etc off tap for their beer.

I'm talking about a real brew pub and people that actually enjoy beer. The place you describe reminds me of the deli on Swan Island that you could pay $99 for "around the world" and drink bottles of "Stingo" .....No, I can go to any number of pubs around these parts and select from a handfull of decent house brews on tap and enjoy good conversation with good eats over a few pints of good beer.

I'm sure there are beer snobs that MUST have a specific draft beer, but I've never really run into anything like what you describe with the exeption of chicks at parties that have to drink "Bud Light" because thats all they drink...they don't even really like it, or beer for that matter, but thats what they drink, when they drink beer. Old fart alcoholics have a similar issue, "I only drink Rainier" or my Grandpa only drank Oly, or my neighbor would only buy Carling's Black label.....not talking about that.

I'd steal Old English 800 from the farmer next door when I was a younger teen, later on in High School, my buddies and I only drank Schlitz Stout Malt Liquor (The Bull!) even though it was a little more expensive, because that what we liked...as an adult growing up and living in the Portland area, I've grown fond of craft beers and brew pubs...its a natural progression when you aquire an adult palate and truely enjoy GOOD beer, nothing pretentious or ridiculous.

That's the thing though 1) you are excluding any larger bar due to they aren't serious enough and 2) just mentioning needing an 'adult palate' to enjoy a good beer is both pretentious and ridiculous.

Real men drink beer, they don't harp over them like they may on a scotch or bourbon or cognac...but then again they aren't dropping $20+ on a single serving either.

Most small pubs will not have a grand selection. If you aren't targeting them because they serve your beer you are going to be either lucky or disappointed.

I don't have "a beer"...I like GOOD beer, and there is a lot of good beers to have....around here, GOOD BEER is easy to find. I sure wouldn't go to some place TO DRINK BEER if they made me feel like some kind of dumbass because I'm NOT ordering Bud Light, and someone that proposes that something like Bud Light is GOOD BEER is certainly someone I couldn't take seriously when it comes to "taste"

It's pointless.

Alky is a perfect example of "The TV ads with the boobies and bright lights and big awesome explosions tells me it's the truth so it MUST be the truth!"

No one with at least an average complement of properly-firing synapses actually believes that "Real Men" only drink light domestics.

The Real Men who founded this country, and those generations before them created and drank beer that was more akin to Bread than water (light domestics).

The early settlers and explorers substituted beer into their diets as it was:

-Full of vitamins and nutrients
-safer than water
-awesome.

Of course, this beer was NOTHING like the piss water that alky bongs into his gullet on a daily basis.

and all of these men were far closer to the classic definition of "Real Man" than about 95% of men born in the previous century, when you considered the type of lives they lead and things they dealt with on a daily basis.

If Alky had his way, real men would be sitting on couches all day watching football, drinking Coors, and loving their cats.

Not chopping wood, exploring jungles, surviving months-long cross-ocean voyages on leaky vessels surviving on moldy scraps and hoppy beer. etc....

I am not trolling and you proved my point. Thanks for trying to personally attack me with thinking bud light is the only beer that every woman you know drinks and that they have a better beer 'palate' than me. WTF and how does PALATE get brought up discussing BEER? As Two and a Half Men professes "Only you could gay up banging two women."

Beer is like pizza; the fast food of the alcohol world, it was never meant to be put up on a pedestal. It was meant to be cheap, easily found and enjoyable and at times substance. Seriously I think it's people afraid of alcohol/becoming an alcoholic that made this *brew cruisade or those that simply can't afford to drop $200-300 on a night of drinking so complicate things to justify it.

Bud Light is a pretty standard fare men and women alike, saying you don't know any that prefer it as a man or doesn't drink it as a woman sort of limits your circle. I like Mich Ultra and I see far more women picking that overall...I'd say it's a toss up to a Corona with Lime in the female crowd that thinks wine is too 'princess'

That said I have friends that don't touch beer (drinking on the high end only to those that just don't like the taste) to those that think PBR is heaven.

Taking beer seriously is where you lose the men in the room.
I have tried all sorts of beers...for about 4 years I drank no less than 12 a day, many times 24. I was self-employed and just sipped away all day. I used to be out and about almost nightly. Although I had my favorites, picking the bar $0.50/$1 draft or beer bucket or pitcher is just the smart move. If I want to drop coin I go to the tequila and rum level. I drink a lot so going beyond that in alcohol content just has me needing to mix water or diet coke in which I drink all day.

I never was focusing on temperature if you were quoting me on that....

If you like yuengling (it's found easily so not in the queer beer category around here) or Victory (never drank it and not familiar with it) that is fine. If you only have to drink those two then that is where you alienate yourself. Around here Yuengling goes for the same price as coors oddly much of the time...however my Mich Ultra is a bit more expensive. I don't get that other than they know it's popular and people will pay. In those cases, I usually go Coors Light or another one.

Here is the rub on that...those dudes needed safe water and a meal, they were fucking bringing down the british or bears.

Those that can ONLY drink a Stella, cry if there iPod breaks.

BIG DIFFERENCE!

I used to drink guinness only. When I was at UF, probably 100 a week.

Your post count scares me...but I am going down that rabbit hole. So you do all the above? I personally think only an idiot of a man would travel overseas like that today. If they do it regularly, I would not call them a pussy by any means.

I don't like watching football...I used to play it though..I do love cats, and dogs, etc...but I am a Zoologist by education so go figure...I am rarely on my couch though. Usually working around the house and yard or on cars whether my own or a friends/family one. I like tools too...there are tool bitches as well. OH NOES CRAFTSMAN/HUSKY/STANLEY/HARBOR FREIGHT SIMPLY CANNOT TURN A BOLT LIKE MY SNAP ON/MAC/??? WRENCH!!!one one one

When I came home from work today, I cut my lawn, fixed a sprinkler, fertilized my grass and now watering it in. Next zone is at 9:20. Tomorrow I am doing some car work in the morning and then heading down to a neighborhood reunion. Last weekend I moved a small business, went to a gun show and watched part of a race final here locally. Not too girly.

I am also on #6 of tonight...that is an hour and a half.

Do you even drink alcohol regularly?

Personally, I agree with several others here. I drink BL when I'm out at the bars or plan on drinking a lot. When it's a chill setting, a BBQ, or a relaxing night on the patio, I'll grab a heavy beer.
