YACT: 50 bucks for an ashtray!?!?!

I just got myself a 97 Nissan Sentra and well, it's missing the ashtray from the front console. I'd like to keep change in it, so anyways I call the closest nissan dealership to see if they have any of those lying around and well, they didn't and they would need to order one. So the guy quotes me 50 bucks for the dang ashtray. No thanks. Anyways, I've tried looking around ebay with no success and I'm not exactly keen on going to a junkyard to find one. Anyone know how else I can get an ashtray for my sentra?

Why not go to a junkyard? Went to one to pick up a quarter window for my stealth. Got it for $50 as opposed to the $180 the dealership wanted.

Well actually, I don't know if there are any nearby junkyards where I live and I figured to try hunting for one over the internet before I head that direction...

Junkyards are the best. Go there and just mess around with the cars there. That part would probably cost like 3 or 4 bucks at a junkyard, maybe less if there is an entrance fee. For my dad's Toyota, they wanted 50 to add a clock and another fifty for adding 4 handle bars near the doors. Went to the junkyard and got everything for under 10 bucks.

Dealerships are a complete ripoff. Story time. I got in a minor accident in a parking lot, this old guy in a truck backed into me putting a huge dent in my hood. His insurance company gave me a check for $1800. I called up my local Chevy dealer and they said the hood alone would cost $600 to replace and the entire job would probably be around $1800 what the insurance company gave me.

This sounded like a complete ripoff. $1800 for a new hood?! So then I called up an aftermarket parts place, they sold me a new hood for $60. I installed the hood myself and had it painted for about $200. Overall the price came out to be $300. I pocketed $1500 and got my hood replaced.

Moral of the story: never ever ever go to a dealership for parts/repairs. The markup is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I highly suggest you look in the phonebook for an aftermarket parts place. They will sell you parts for your car at a fraction of the price.
