i'd second both the civic and volvo suggestions. here's my little breakdown for those:
reliabilty: hondas are great, but if you get a pre-ford volvo, it will run forever and ever. advantage: volvo.
operating cost: the hondas will get better mileage and will be cheaper to maintain. advantage: honda
safety: civic's aren't too bad actually, but nothing beats those boxy volvos, especially the wagons, and especially the 240 wagons. advantage: volvo
fun-to-drive: any honda will be more fun to drive than any volvo, although a turbo volvo might outrun a civic. the civic would still be more fun doing it though. advantage: honda
basically either one would be good and it would be up to you.
