this happen to a friend of mine, and what i heard really doesn't make sense to me. hopefully you guys could shed some light on it.

he bought an used 99 a4, i can't remember if it was certified or not.. anyway, this is what happenend.

he got in an accident. the right wheel got smashed in and was in the shop for few weeks to get that fixed. when he went to pick up his car, the mechanic at the dealer told him that his car seems a bit off, prob since it's been sitting in the lot for a while, so to get the kinks out take the car out for a spin on the highway.

well right after he picked up the car, he took it on the highway as suggested by the mechanic, and soon after, the car over heated and came to a complete stop. when he took the car back in, they said the engine was caked w/ dried up oil, the timing belt melted, the plastic tray of sorts was melted. also according to the dealer, the turbo was shot along w/ the engine, so he had to get a new one there too.. the damage: $3500.

the thing is he changed his oil every 5k, altho not at the dealer, and he's not sure if the oil change place that he used, used synthetics or not. the car showed no signs of having any problems until the accident. then all of a sudden, right after the car comes back from the bodyshop all this happens to him.. (ie: on his way home!!) his car has 54000 miles, and the dealer blamed the whole thing on my friend, citing his negligence, ie: the caked on oil in his engine didn't build up overnight, so the whole issue came about due to his negligence, so it was all on him.

he just picked up his car yesterday after paying the $3500 tab, and told me about it today. i smelled something fishy, but since i'm not a guru on cars, i thought i'd bug you guys about it. i wonder if the dealer took him for a ride since he doesn't really speak english too well and he doesn't know all that much about cars.. *sigh* thanks for reading all that and any input would be welcome.

Seeing as how the dealer was the only one to look at the inside of the engine, they probably just lied about what went wrong. There isn't a whole lot your friend can do now since I'm sure they "cleaned" the engine along with his bank account.

If he doesn't know if the oil change place used synthetics, then they didn't.

They sent him out the door with a car with no radiator fluid in it? No temperature gage or idiot light came on to warn of overheating before it 'just stopped'? Either the dealer screwed it up, or it was a REALLY used 99 a4. How long did he own before he wrecked it?

wow... how can your friend not know what type of oil they used? :Q

and besides, timing belt is a problemous thing with 99 audis and vws but other than that i dont know what could have gone wrong...

probably the dealer ripped your friend off, sorry, but your friend should have been smart enough to take a second opinion about the car before paying $3500...

i didn't get the full details on what the conditions were when he left the dealer, but i'm sure there were no warning lights, or he would've known about it. (i would assume anyway)

he purchased the car a lil over a year ago, no problems, oil change every 5k miles, just not at the dealer. i hear audi recommends an oil change every 5k, but synthetics should last longer than that right? as for the type of oil used, he prob didn't pay much attention to it, prolly got a 5/30 or a 10/30 filled up from a drum and went on his happy way.

i wish he would've talked to me about this crap when it happened, but he was pretty pissed, and didnt' wanna talk about it.. so i thought it was just that, then he told me last night while chatting..

imo your friend needs to take better care of his car.

i know quite a bit about cars.. and you should now enough to know whether or not the place is using synthetic...... also, the idiot light *should* have gone off; and that's what I would have said "How did this happen without the light coming on?!?"

however, it's too late now

By the size of the tab, I can assume your pal has the 1.8t engine ( a non interference engine). If he was running the 2.8 V6 (an interference engine), a timing belt break would cost him 4.5k easily. When the belt breaks on an interference engine, the heads and pistons need to be replaced. It's a huge job.

Obviously the overheating issue is somehow related to either the dealer or the accident. I'd get a second opinion.

First, since your friend has already paid for the service there is little he can do.

Second, since the vehicle was in a front-end collision there could have been damage done to the cooling fan circuits or even the cooling system. I would have had the coolant level checked and the fan operation confirmed before approving anything to due with an overheated engine. Caked oil on an engine doesn?t cause engine overheating, this is caused by a cooling system failure, not a oil leak.

This does seem to be a little fishy and would consult a lawyer over this.

actually, did your friend go to an AUdi/VW dealer or just a used car dealer? IMHO, Audi dealerships are expensive as hell, but they are honest. I have been tried to get screwed over by noname mechanics for a couple times, thanks to Audi dealerships, always saved a couple hundred.

the thing that i wanted to know was if the part damaged in the accident, but not fixed for whatever reasons, insurance co not signing off on it, or the dealer just over looking it may have caused the eventual replacement of the engine.
i'd understand if the car was not taken care of properly, but my friend did try to keep his car in a descent running shape. but since what's done is done, it maybe hard to point fingers, but still it seems like he just got taken.. so from the looks of things, not much he can do at this point??
btw, i think he took it to an audi/vw dealer..

imo theres nothing he can do.

the body shop will point at audi

audi will point at bodyshop and/or him

and, in all reality, theres no way for you to find out whether audi should have picked it up, or the body shop might have broken something.

One thing that is odd, is he shouldnt have had to "take it for a drive around the block" or whatever..
