Whenever I am at a stop my A/C blows out hot air. Once I start moving and get around 2500rpms the A/C starts getting really cold but once I get above 3000rmps it starts getting warmer again and the higher the engine revs the hotter that air blows. This is a real pain because the air keeps getting hot and cold while driving around town and just gets hot when I'm driving fast on the highway. What could be causing this? Any ideas? Thanks.

First get the refridgerant level checked.

Second: what vehicle is it? If RWD check to see that the fan clutch is working. Assuming there is no electric fan.

Also: does the compressor clutch kick on rapidly or every 20 seconds or so. Rapid clutch engagement indicates low pressure which usually translates to low refridgerant levels.

Good questions, waiting for the answers.

It's a 94 Miata. It's RWD but how do I check the fan check to see if the fan clutch is working? Where is it and what does it look like? lol.

What do you mean? I'm a n00b when it comes to cars. Once it gets hot it takes a while to get cold again if that means anything. It doesn't quickly get cold again.....

Sounds like you low on refrigerant, have a qualified mechanic check the operation of the system.

Could this be something I could do myself? I'm completely out of cash ATM.

My A/C has been doing this lately and like you i'm out of cash too. Luckily my dad was an A/C Repair man and helped me fix my problem. Turns out I was a little low on refridgerant and he just put some in and it works like a charm.

well you can, but you would REALLY need to hit the ATM hard (Compressor, AC recharge kit)

and I can't remember but was R12 still being put into cars in 1994? I think you should have 134 but if you don't you will need to convert too

My Acura Integra's A/C doesn't work so well these days...

95 bucks to diagnose and about 500 to repair if its the compressor.

A/C work is not something you can really do yourself. Federal law requires you to hold a license to buy R-12 and also states you have to have recovery equipment to recover and recycle it with a seperate machine for R-134. If you want to convert, the drier, possibly the condensor, and the compressor has to be changed along with flushing the system. You have to install a high pressure cut-off switch on the compressor or high side somewhere. If it is an orifice tube system the orifice tube needs to be changed along with all of the o-rings and either a PAG or ester oil depending on the compressor. Once all that is done, you will need to evacuate the system with a vacuum pump before recharging with 20% less of the new refrigerent for 134.

Besides all the good point already listed, you don't know if it's R134a or R12. And without proper equipment, min. A/C Gauges, you could over or under charge the system and have the same problem.

A/C repair is not a good starting point to learn how to fix cars.

Another thing you could check is if the AC equipment is properly shielded from the heat coming off the engine. Not sure if this is as much a problem in cars as it is in my truck, but I had the same problem recently. Got to digging around and found the heat shield had slipped down, leaving the AC components unprotected. Bought a new one, and installed it, and the difference is night and day. Just a thought.

I dont know about US, but here you need a liscence to fix AC's. My dad has one and has all the tools and the gas. You need to know which kind of gas is in your car.
