Wow, if this is true, and I highly doubt it, what a stupid way to change oil.

Some cars have their filter on the bottom of the car. Some do not.

Jiffylube doesn't actually change anything. They hook up a machine that makes noise to make it look like they suck out the oil.

Eh? Oil pans/plugs are on the bottom of the engine block. You really can't reach it from the hood. You still have to get under there one way or another.

Not really. I have seen them do it. They use a machine that sucks the oil out of the car.

Yes, I've heard of that method.
I would think that procedure would leave all of the crap that settles to the bottom of the pan.
I have also read that it leaves ~ 1 quart of the old oil in the pan. (?)
I typically pour about a quart of solvent through the filler every 3rd or 4th change to help flush that stuff out.

I do it myself because I don't trust the grease monkeys at the shop. Who knows what else they do to your car while they "change your oil'?

I don't trust anyone other than myself. You have to understand that it's the lowest level grease monkeys who have just enough brain cells to stay conscious that do menial tasks such as changing the oil, I'd rather not entrust my engine to them.

OMFG, I thought you said "...filter every 3rd of 4th change" and about had a heart attack.. implying that you leave your filter on for at least 3-4 oil changes.

I'd have to hunt you down and beat you with a bent connecting rod.

Anyway, $100 in tools and supplies, 2.5 hours, 2 trips to the auto store, 1 trip to the hardware store, 10 billion cuss words, 1 big oil spill, two filthy hands and arms, and 5 empty oil bottles later... i changed my own oil!

whew. i'm not sure its worth it. of course, next time, i'll only need to spend $10-$15, and i'll know the oil shoots FAR and FAST. but it will take like 15 changes before i make my money back. there is something to be said for spending 10 minutes having someone else do it and not getting filthy or having to worry about recycling.

I do most of my own work, but $14 oil changes at the dealer is well worth it....I can look under my car on the lift and usually ask them if they see anything anyway.

My brother and I did a minor service on his car for 1/4 what porsche wanted in about 2 hours time plus buying the magnesium filter wrench and the plug socket.

Expensive machine that does a crappy job draining the oil, or unplugging a simple drain plug with a few dollar tool? Hmm, which will I do?

I hate changing the oil on my GF's Saturn. The filter is in such a sucky place.

I have very poor short term memory, so I'd rather someone else do it than screw it up myself... the last time I changed my own oil I forgot to put the oil cap back on, and drove around for TWO MONTHS without realizing it. Fortunately it had wedged itself next to the plug wires, and once I added a few quarts the engine was OK. It took forever to clean up the oil all over the engine...

Now that I have a newer car it's worth the $20 or so for someone else to do it IMO.

If you figure out the quick tricks on your car, it takes just a few minutes. While I'm waiting for the bottles to drain into the engine, I'm looking around for any other trouble I might have. Of course it helps to have a few years or decades of auto repair under your belt

I went to crappy lube once.....cost nearly $40 for using crappy oil. It took forever and they game me dirty looks when I refused any of the additional services, and watched as they changed the oil. I can't use the synthetics (1995), so usually use the high mileage formulas (usually ~$15-20 for the oil).

I hate doing it because I get hot oil on my arms and dirty on my back and hair. It is also more expensive to change it myself. $12 for 5 quarts, $10 for a Mobil 1 filter. The local shop does it for like 17.99. Heres why you should do and not let a shop (unless you trust them 100%)

1. Sometimes it's very hot and messy so they may just drain the oil and not change the filter
2. They overfill it sometimes, and use the cheapest filter
3. Lots of places offer cheap oil changes to bring you in and make you believe you need to do bogus repairs to your car
4. Sometimes the wait is very long
