Most racing I know of takes place even in rain.
In Britain, you don't have much choice.

Formula 1, Touring Cars, F3000, F3, Formula Ford (crappy single seaters), all support races (Porsche Cup etc), and I think GT races do too.

I was taking a jab at Nascar, where they cry foul if the track has a smidgen of dirt on it.

It's hard to tell - it looks to me as though he was actually some ways away from the fire - the camera angle makes it hard to perceive depth, but he's clearly some distance from the Porsche, as judged by the length of fence between the car and the base of that viewing station he's standing in.

If you look real close, part of the flag stand gets ignited fuel sprayed on it. you can see it for about 1/3 of a second as the camera pans back to the left

I sent this link to a guy I work with, who is a corner worker. He told me those guys screwed up at least six different ways, including the method and timing of flagging, as well as the gross amount of time it took to get to the Ferrari with extinguishers. I'll record the exact errors tomorrow, if anybody's interested.
