So my car is totalled and the rental people gave me the keys to a 3k mile old Edge SEL AWD.

in a nutshell

- interior is pretty nice and comfortable
- handling is pretty good too, though it feels like it has a heavy bias towards understeer
- mushy brakes
- stereo has a connection problem and the left side blinks out once in a while, but otherwise sounds pretty good when working
- needs more power, the motor has a tendancy to struggle if you start pushing the car
- i think it looks pretty nice in person

i've never owned an suv/crossover, my previous cars were 2 s13's, a b5 a4 1.8tqms, and a toyota corolla. the awd system can't compare to the audi, and is more intrusive than i expected. but overall has a pretty taut ride and responds promptly for a car its size.

more than anything else i'm surprised i like a ford.

The nice thing about a Ford is that right on their logo they circle what is wrong with the vehicle.

They know they can't cut it with cheap crap anymore. All Big 3 made considerable amount of effort to improve quality of their cars....

S13's are great fun, I used to have one also, and then a 14. 15 was a bit steep for me.

hehe i'm debating about picking up an s14 now, but i don't know if that will escape the wife's glare of disappointment ("no more toy cars!")

Once upon a time, I'd have agreed with that statement wholeheartedly! When I was younger, and worked on cars to supplement my income, I always refused to work on Fords. "My wrenches don't fit no fvcking Fords"...
Then, in 2005, I was in the market for a new truck, and my first stop was at the Dodge dealer. Didn't really like the line-up at the time, (back seat in the crew-cab was too small IMO) so I broke all tradition, and looked at the neighboring Ford store.
I was impressed with the looks and performance of the new Ford pick-ups. This was during the "Employee Pricing Sale" in place at the time, so stocks were VERY limited, and I never did find a pick-up with all the features I wanted, so I "settled for" a 2005 Expedition King Ranch.
What a nice truck. Drives nicely, handles well (for an SUV) seems to be built well, (but there are a few minor "fit & finish" issues that I am not happy with).
Overall, we are happy with the truck, but the only thing I don't like about it, is it's affection for gas stations...However, on the highway, it gets about 17 MPG, so I can live with that.
NO, I never even considered one of the "rice-burners", as IME, the build quality just isn't there. Look around, you see very few Japanese cars on the road that are 20+ yrs old...they just don't hold up. (no, I don't plan to keep this truck 20 years, but that fact does affect overall value IMO.)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/daily/nov98/nazicars30.htm

When the U.S. Army liberated the Ford plants in Cologne and Berlin, they found destitute foreign workers confined behind barbed wire and company documents extolling the "genius of the Fuehrer," according to reports filed by soldiers at the scene. A U.S. Army report by investigator Henry Schneider dated Sept. 5, 1945, accused the German branch of Ford of serving as "an arsenal of Nazism, at least for military vehicles" with the "consent" of the parent company in Dearborn.

Hitler was an admirer of American mass production techniques and an avid reader of the antisemitic tracts penned by Henry Ford. "I regard Henry Ford as my inspiration," Hitler told a Detroit News reporter two years before becoming the German chancellor in 1933, explaining why he kept a life-size portrait of the American automaker next to his desk.

Although Ford later renounced his antisemitic writings, he remained an admirer of Nazi Germany and sought to keep America out of the coming war. In July 1938, four months after the German annexation of Austria, he accepted the highest medal that Nazi Germany could bestow on a foreigner, the Grand Cross of the German Eagle. The following month, a senior executive for General Motors, James Mooney, received a similar medal for his "distinguished service to the Reich."

Japanese cars had problems in the early 80s...

They made a nice inroad from late 80s to early 90s. Of course, you not going to find 20+ years Japanese cars.

But that's all in the past. When GM starting to lose 30% of market share slowly...

there are japanese cars that make it more than 20+ years, for instance you can still find 80's corollas for sale and even the occasional 70's corona. The nissan z's are pretty common as well. You also have to think of the type of owners are buying japanese cars. The biggest market for japanese cars has always been for economicly thrifty cars. If you want to be fair, you should compare domestic econoboxes to foreign econoboxes. I think there are far fewer domestic econoboxes still in use today than japanese econoboxes.

the more i drive the edge the more it grows on me. it is really impressive how well it handles for such a big car. a few other things that have surprised me include how easy it is to parallel park, and how wide this thing is. its gargantuan. there is a massive amount of leg room as well. i like that. people in the back seat can comfortably stretch out their legs and not be squished at their sides.

i still don't think i'd buy one, but i think ford did a very nice job with the car. I think it shows that domestic car makers can still change the trend of poorly built, poorly designed, poor handling cars around.

Honestly, of any domestic brand, I'd take a Ford over any of the others for most classes.

Small car? Focus.
Midsize? Fusion
Mid/Full size? Five hundred.
Full size truck? F150.
Sports car under $25k? Mustang GT.

I think the GM Lambda platforms are better than the Edge and the GM full size SUV's are the best of the bunch, but as far as cars go, I think Ford cleans house.

I don't know what Ford would have to do to get me back into their fold.

After owning a Contour that was recalled an amazing 7 times in less than 3 years (not counting the problems I found) I've had enough of Ford ownership hell to last me a long time.

Of course I can blame it on the Mexicans as my damn Contour was assembled in Mexico. Here's to buying an American nameplate. Sheesh.

I take Mazda 3 over Focus. I take the 6 over Fusion. I'll take the new Toyota truck over the F150. I take Altima over Five Hundred.

$25k fast car. Now thats tough to beat.

Opps...I thought Ford own some Mazda. And some of Toyota is made in US. Hard to differentiate b/w domestic and foreign these days. Sorry mate.

If you meant the Big 3 only. There really isn't much competition....

They do. Just go to ford.com and see what brands pop up. Alot of the Fords and Mazda are based on the same platform and share drivetrains now including the Mazda 6 and Ford Fusion. Isn't the edge also based off the 6 platform or some mazda anyway? I don't give a crap about suvs so I don't follow them much.

 Rice burning... trucks?

I do not consider my Toyota Tundra rice in any sense whatsoever. My 2003 Tundra has 70K miles on it and has not had ONE problem since we bought it. I am not Asian by the way, but your ignorance is pretty annoying. I have heard of Tundras lasting for 250,000+ miles without any serious problems. Let's just say... Ford's quality is not exactly at that level. I should know, we had a Ford before we go the Tundra. This is for the Toyota by the way. I know the Nissan Titan's reliability and quality is even worse than Ford's (I know, hard to imagine, isn't it? ), so maybe your Ford is better than a Nissan, but lose your ignorance and don't stereotype. :disgust:

Your both idiots. Lots of f-150s make 250k miles without any real problems too. Big deal.
