Distributor cap. I have been having problems with the truck and hard starts ('74 Dodge D100 318) so I decided to check out the distributor cap. I take it off, and all the points are corroded. So I go to the parts bin (My brother had a truck like this that was totalled, so I have alot of extra engine components). I find a cap that has like new points. I go to install it, adn I forgot to mark my wires. Anything to remedy this situation? Or do I have to dig in google?

I have the firing order, but how does this pertain to the order of the wires? Which one ould be cylinder 1? (noob at cars)

IIRC my firing order is cast into the block - you might want to look there before you hit up google.

Is there a notch/line in the distributor?

there are two '1's etchin in the old cap. I don't know which one it is. Ill post a pic in a sec.

All you need is the firing order, know which pistons are which, and the direction of ration of the distributor cap.

And of course fifure out which mark is number one.

first result on google:

It is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 with 1-3-5-7 on the drivers side front to back, 2-4-6-8 on the pass side and the dist turns clockwise.

In your case the distributor rotates clockwise.
The firing order is: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Front 2 4 6 8
....... 1 3 5 7

1974 should have electronic ignition,
well in a car it should have,starting with 340 cid in 1972 Mopars.

My 64 Valiant has electronic ignition,circa 73 Mopar.

I'd probably call the service dept of a dealer and ask. They'll usually look it up on the computer and help you if you're not an @ss.

Glad you got it.
I never mark my wires. It is so much easier just to rip them off and put them back than to mark them or remove them individually.

Hmm... now this new cap, the timing is at 20* advance (!!!!!). Have to adjust that. And those telling me to get a new car, phuck you! I am 17, got this truck for 400 bucks, and I am using it to learn about cars and such (I like being a handyman). I could drive my old Pontiac, but that thing is soo hard to work on. Once I find my camera, Ill post pics of the truck.

Also, which way is advance and which way is retard (clockwise or counterclockwise?) I am workin alone and the truck won't stay running long enough to let me adjust it (w/ 20* advance.. ug)

Eay way to tell which way to turn is where the vacuum advance is. Hold on I'll try to find a pic.
