Ya I agree. I hated the concept but really like the way it came out.

My only complaint is the rear end of it. With the older cars, the fastback would go all the way to the back of the car. With the 2005, it stops and then there is a flat space for the trunk. If they had gone with the older look, it would look less like a Passat or Audi with a Mustang front end.

Compare this to the media pics. I thought the car show pic looked better.

Can you say launches harder than IRS?

Can you say handles like crap. IRS launches are no problem... Hmmm F1, touring car racing, IRL, CART... basically all modern cars of any caliber has it.
Cheaper Yes, but hey even econoboxes habe IRS so I don't understand why they do it.

Just my $0.02

Hmmm......F1, touring car racing, IRL, CART - none of these cars are RWD and have issues launching at the 1/4 track, like the 99-04 Cobra does. Many Cobra owners have swapped out the IRL in place for a solid rear axle. Quixfire has driven the 05 Mustang and has stated it handles pretty well without it. Having IRS is not a prerequisite for great handling. It might be an option on the Shelby/Cobra (whatever nameplate they plan on bringing back) for the 06.

Ummm... F1, CART, IRL (some touring cars) doesn't have RWD and IRS? LOL
Yes they have.
IRS not giving better handling? Usually yes. Why do most RWD sports car have it? Ferrari with a live rear axle? Don't think so.

Opps, I read your post again and it seems like you agree with me? The wording made me confused.

I'm not agreeing with you - I'm saying none of those cars are meant to be raced/pushed on the 1/4 track like most Cobra owners would take their cars. All of those cars are raced in a different style than a Mustang are, obviously. IRS is inhibitive of the type of racing a Mustang owner would put it through. Nitrous Pete's 03 Cobra which runs an 8.57 had IRS swapped out before he even hit 11's. JDM among other tuner's Cobras all have a live axle swapped in. Hell even the Mustang GTR concept doesn't have IRS and it's a pure bred track car. And where did I say IRS doesn't give better handling? I said it's not a prerequisite for great handling, that's two totally different things. See the above GTR for an example. Ferrari with a live axle? Why the hell are you comparing a $25K car to a $100K+ (minimum) car?

I love the look of the new 05 Mustang. To me, it's like they finally brought the Mustang back after another car had been hijacking the name for the last 30 years. I'm certainly planning on test driving one, and I even feel tempted to buy one (but I'll wait at least until '06 for that).

Ford has a big turn-around in the works, and I think it might actually pay off (unlike most of GM's domestic nameplates, which won't). New designers, new management, new philosophy. The new Taurus replacement, the '05 Ford 500, should be a big hit, and includes an optional Volvo-copied Haldex AWD system and an optional CVT.
Anyway, I have a feeling that people's opinions of Ford might change here in the near-future. Or maybe not. But their new lineups are certainly an impressive change in the right direction.

Fords are good cars. They may have gotten themselves a bad rap at one point, but they are solidly built, and I think many of them are good-looking.

Take the late-80's early-90's Sable, for example. I've got one thats pushing 14 years old and it runs great on original motor etc. There goes the "Fix or repair daily" handle, at least as far as I'm concerned.

And looking at my Sable, I thinks its a well styled car. And its big. I love it.

And then Ford breaks out the Mercury Marauder. That is a sharp car. Very sharp.

then we get the GT. That is one of the most amazing peices of car I've ever seen. I'd take it over any ferrari, but I somewhat loyal, given how well my Sable has served me.

And I must agree that the '05 Mustang GT is a VERY sharp looking car. I love it.

I was just trying to make a point that a new modern sportscar should not have a live axel (stone age tech) but for the drag strip, sure it makes sense.

Mustangs are pony cars not sports cars . It would be nice if an IRS was an option but I can live without it. The new one should still handle better then the old ones and the old ones don't handle anywhere near as bad as people think. I can't see the new Cobra not having an IRS though.

When are they coming out? I'll probably see it a couple months before then (Ford country).

They should be arriving at your local Ford dealership around the middle of September.
