why are you using premium?

your car does not require it. even if premium is recommended your car will not suffer if it runs on regular.

In most turbocharged or supercharged cars high octane gasoline it needed to prevent detonation due to the high compresson ratio those engines operate at.

you don't even know what kind of car he's driving, do you?

what if the motor runs 10-12 pounds of boost?

put anything less than 91 or 93 octane in a motor like that and watch the fun begin

If the $2.50 you save by switching from premium to regular is good enough to offset the damage that could occur to a high compression engine, by all means, get it.

do some investigative reading for yourself instead of buying into the hype that is premium gas.

Prejudice and preference aside, engineers, scientists and the federal government say there's little need for premium.

The main advantage of premium-grade gas is that it allows automakers to advertise a few more horsepower by designing and tuning engines to take advantage of premium's anti-knock properties. But auto engineers generally agree that if you use regular in a premium engine, the power loss is so slight, most drivers can't tell.

How octane works.

From the article:

"The only modern engines that should really need premium are those with superchargers, which force-feed fuel into the cylinders. "You're driving along and just tramp the gas and the knock sensor cannot sense the knock fast enough in some cases," because the supercharger boosts pressure so fast, says Bob Furey, chemist and fuels specialist at General Motors."

Even though this man wrong in describing how a supercharger works he is correct that forced induction engines usually require high octane fuel.

i tell you what...i'll take my 86 300zx with a boost controller, dial it up to 10-12 pounds of boost or so and then run 87 octane...when my motor is shot after 20 miles or so, you can buy me a new one, k?

i can only push that much boost if i run 93 octane...and that's on a cool day....on a hot day i'm lucky to push 8 pounds on 91 octane without it pinging(i need an intercooler)...contrary to what you have heard, there are cars out there that require higher octane gasoline...it's not just something the big bad oil companies cooked up to bilk the consumer out of a few more cents...it does make a difference in the right engine, and can mean the difference between smooth operation and catastrophic failure

now, if i put premium in my buick regal 3.8 V6 that is naturally aspirated, i would be a dumbass

Filled up this morning for $38, only got 180 miles out of the tank, too. On the bright side, the tank lasted 15 days, meaning I probably spent less than most people per day even though I got 12.5MPG
