To each their own. I think the 2000-2003 are the nicest looking ones. Although the 2004 is damn nice too.

My 96 still strong after 140K miles. The CD on the Bose stopped working, but it happened just as I was transitioning to ipod with tape adapter, so no big loss.
A few small things did go wrong with it, rear window regulators, oil pressure switch, starter, a few miscellaneous sensors here and there, CV boots, but repair costs have been small and I have done most of the repairs myself.

I have a 95 SE with about 220K miles and still running great with only minor problems and typical wear issues. I will be donating it this year for a $4K tax write-off.

I also have a 2K2 SE (1st year with the 3.5 VQ) which has been just as reliable so far.

get a 97 SE, its got a slightly better looking front and reat end and the 5 spoke rims, one of the best looking OEM rims IMO

Maxima's have the highest repeat buyers in its class I believe, so that itself is a testimony to how good the car is.

My dad's '92 was great, although not the generation you're looking at.
My uncle went from a '97 to a '01 and finally got rid of it for an Accord Coupe V6 because his lease on the '1 Max was up and he got a great deal on the Accord.
He now misses the Maxima

If my Sentra ever dies, I'll be looking to get a black/black '01-'03 SE (if I get the '03, I'll swap tails with the '01-'02 black SE tail lights).
Either that or a G35 Coupe

I heard on the news this morning that the Cadillac Escalade is the number one car that is stolen and the Nissan Maxima is second (they said due to the expensive headlights?).

The auto stolen the least is the Saturn stationwagon.

I've had my 96SE 5spd for a little over 2 years now. It has about 137k km on it, which about 20k km were mine. I've had no major issues with it, car runs great.

I get about 21/24-25mpg. mileage not be as good as before due to a reprogrammed ecu.

Only personal qualm I have is that the damn rear seats don't fold down.

Not selling yet. I wanna save up for an Acura TL before I sell.
But you don't want my car anyway. It's got over 100k miles.

yup, the 2000-2001 Max had normal halogens while the 02 and 03 came standard with HIDs. Being easily transplantable between the the various models makes the HIDs targets for theft.
I don't know if the entire car is stolen or just the lights. I don't think the 3.5 VQ is easily ported to the 2000 and 2001 models however.

Had a 97 SE. Would definitely reccomend it to anybody looking for an older sports sedan.
The 190HP V6 is really good. Just look out for the auto trannies in the 4th generation ones. If you can get a 5spd - nothing like it.

We had a 4 spd auto. There was nothing wrong with it but it just had a 'weak' feeling. A bunch of other friends of mine also had 4th gen's and we all drive our cars pretty rough. We were all members of maxima.org and went on many meets together - good times. Some of the auto ones had to get their trannies replaced at about 100K miles - but the 5-spd manuals are still going strong at 150000+ miles.

I figure if I get a car that gets 25-30+ mpg highway it'll half pay for itself in gas savings alone(I currently have a fullsize pickup as an everyday driver). Anyways, the Maxima has caught my eye, it's a slick looking car(I think so anyways) and not a super compact(I like my space). So, Maxima owners(or former owners), tell me your experiences? Satisfied with it?

Any others throw some suggestions at me for a car with the above specs.

I own a 96 Max with 200k+ miles on it.

Best darn car I have ever owned. I like it more than my 2003 which I sold earlier this year.

It gets great mileage, tons of power, good ride, nice looking, and is a nice overall package.
