My current car is on its last legs and I need a new one I have been shopping around and have pretty much decided on getting a Ford Ranger, XLT 2.3ltr 5-speed manual. I have been working with a place that seems to be ready to give me a good price on one. I am just curious what ATOT thinks of them.
If you are going to mindlessly post "FORD SUXORZ!!!!11" stay out, or at least give a valid reason why they suck.

The Ranger is basically the same exact truck as it was in 1992 (or earlier, correct me if I'm wrong). This probably means it's a solid truck that'll serve you well, but it probably will be complete crap in terms of comfort, ergonomics and general modernity.

whats the price ? for a little more you can probably get a F150, and the insurance will be a lot cheaper, the V6/4 banger ranger engine might last longer with less maintance though, it'll go 200-300k pretty easily

You can get a new one at the Ford Employee price until August 1. My neighbor has one and it has been dependable and reliable for him. I don't
think they suck, but Ford hasn't updated the Ranger in a long time, so it's not as refined and polished as say as a Tacoma or Frontier..but if you want it as a work horse, I think they are fine....that's my 2 cents

I've had 3, a 91, a 96 & a 99.

No problems with them, but unless you're going to be doing a lot of highway driving, and want the better mileage a Ranger will give you in the 4 banger MT version, I'd go with a stripper F150 too (which is what I currently own)

The total should be around 10k perhaps a little less, I am going to talk hard numbers with them tomorrow. Granted I could get the larger F-150 for just a bit more but I like the gas milage of the L4/5M. And ford has taken some time to update the interior some, Its certainly not the most modern truck in the world but it fits my needs perfectly. http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks/ranger/

very sturdy car - I had the chance to take home a Manual 2006 Mazda B series (same as ranger basically) for the weekend. Very practical vehicle.

if it were me, id go for the toyota equivalent, but thats only because of the top gear series where they tried, and failed to destroy one. i say go for it. the employee discount makes it very appealing.

wtf? you can get a new, non hundai car for under $15k that you'd actually want to drive?

Ranger L4/5M milage 24/29

F-150 V6/4A milage 15/20

Thats why I want a Ranger over an F-150.

I know what you mean, like I said, I've had 3 of them, the 4 cylinder amazed me on the highway with it's MPG...

Only in Texas. Any single Ford, Chevrolet or Dodge dealer in this state has more trucks than it has people in the city in which it's located.

Any idea what the 2006 Ranger will be like? If it's going to be radically changed, you'll see a big hit on the value of a 2005. Good bargaining tool.

Edit: Looks like the 2006 Ranger is pretty much the same!

Colorado is around that range also and is brand new. i havent checked it out though, ford though i havent heard much about good rotors, know of an f150 that warped in under 20 miles, and my dads bosses f350 had 3 rotors in 60k miles

Look at GMs too. (Chevy or GMC). Both are offering good deals right now. Shop around. Pay for the Consumer Reports auto reccomendations

I had a Ranger with the 3.0 V6 and an auto as my first vehicle, and I loved it. I'd get another one in a heartbeat if someone offered me a good price

Consumer reports is not a good basis for car buying recomendations, in my book.
I looked at all of the light trucks out there (Colorado/Canyon, Frontier, and Tacoma) The Ranger offered the best value for the money, the Chevy/GMC products are too new to judge long term reliabiltiy on, the Frontier seems ok but is a bit on the expensive side and the Tacoma was last on my list because EVERYTHING is an option :|

had one for work before I got my Ram. It sucked. Too small, poor ride, poor mileage. I drive a Dakota as a personal vehicle, MUCH better. Very roomy inside, better handling and ride. And if you don't go V8m decent mileage.

Yeah, that's the problem with the Tacoma....the base model really is bare bones.
