YACT: so, she got a new car last night *whimsical*

girlfriend traded in her 03 camry last night to cover the dp and cut the monthly payments on her new vehicle of choice - 06 accord coupe ex-v6 (non-hybrid, automatic). 28.4 w/o the navi, so her payments are about 380/month. she's leasing a car for the first time, and i think for someone who drives less than 6k miles a year, it's not a bad option at all for her.

anyway, i had initially been pressuring her to avoid honda at all costs, mainly because i'm more partial to infiniti/acura (having toyed with an integra and currently owning a g35) ? but being a girl and all that entails, she refused to purchase a vehicle that bore the same brand as anything I had ever owned.

so last night we ended up at the dealership. the whole thing took less than a few hours, the salesman himself was kinda thrown-off at the speed all the paperwork, prepping, etc was done. drove the little blue coupe out of the lot, me more than a little disgruntled (having seen all the tsx/tl's on the lot). during the test drive i hadn't pushed the car at all, heh i guess i was trying to emphasize my distaste for the vehicle.

now on the way home, i gave the pedal a bit of a nudge, and found love at second sight.

the car is ultra-responsive, though not quite the throaty grumble i'm used to out of my infiniti, it still has it's own distinctive growl. it literally leaps forward, handles so smoothly, i almost forgot what car i was in. the car is well-balanced, grips the road with ease, and it's truly a pleasure to drive. 244 hp in a small, relatively low, light car like that makes for some great pick-up and i found myself having to lay off the gas after being surprised by the speedometer needle more than a few times. interior design looks very-well thought out, leather and silvered trim are a nice touch. the exterior is far from shabby as well, the new tails plus the whole aggressively profiled frame setting the car a long, long, long ways apart and ahead of the 98-03 models imprinted in my memory. though i tried to hide it- she saw me having a blast in her new ride, and i don't doubt i'm going to catch some flak from it for at least the next half-decade.

the drive home was a pretty enlightening experience for me - 28k will buy a fantastic car these days; a fact i'm still getting used to. though i probably will never purchase a honda (s2000 was what turned me off to the brand in the first place), i have a new-found respect for their capabilities and the design of their vehicles.

for her and her new ride, for me and the expansion of my consciousness

lol s2000 lover? the car is ugly, straight up. and if i can't get past the way it looks to get in the vehicle, it doesn't mean sh!t to me how it handles or what it's capable of.

as i said, the experience was enlightening.

i always considered hondas to be mediocre cars at best (past their reliability, etc). acuras, yes, are the same car, but you pay a premium for some heavy styling and features you won't find in say a civic or accord. to me, if that's what you knowingly pay for, then that's worth it.

in essence, i saw honda as a base model acura, and i was proven wrong yesterday.

sigh... way to miss the point entirely, did it go that far over your head? or do you drive some 98 stripped base model and have convinced yourself over the years that it's the same car as a fully loaded rl?

Acura decided to discontinue the RSX because it was found that you could get a new Civic Si for a lot less that performed just as well.

<-- has an old Civic and hates it big time

EDIT: $28k for a non-S2000 Honda? Wow.

I can think of dozens of cars on the market uglier than the S2000. Furthermore, for better or worse, the S2000 is hardly indicative of all Hondas (or any Honda other than the S2000 really...)

Don't believe me?

Quick, name all the RWD, two-seat, sports cars that have worn a Honda badge in the last 20 years!

$28k? Wow, that seems kind of high for an Accord. She could have gotten an Acura TSX for that price.

you're right, but we can't help where our prejudices stem from, can we?

the first real experience i had with honda was with an s2000, and i really, really didn't like it. didn't like the way it looked, didn't like sitting in it -- didn't even take it out for a test drive. then my parents purchased an sc430 and i've never looked at convertibles the same way since. so the only real memory i have with honda (other than riding around in my friends' beaten up civics and accords), is a negative one -- and although it may have been unfairly biased and neither accurate nor indicative of the brand as a whole -- it was a very real one.

I think it has more to do with the fact that Americans don't buy luxury brands (Acura) when they come in FWD coupe form...

You probably did yourself a favor then as it's less suited to people who need their looks and their comfort and more suited to people who want a pure, driver's car.

No cup-holders, no radio worth speaking of, no fancy badge, high-strung engine, jarring suspension...

Mmmm...I miss mine already
