YACT: What tires to buy?

I was wondering what kind of tires to buy? Size 195/70-14. I live in Florida so maybe some good rain traction would help.

Also, some people have mentioned tirerack.... how long does it take to get them and is it good to drive on the little donut until they come?

Sumitomo HTR 200 (good dry/wet tire?) $39
BFGoodrich Traction T/A H $58

umm... my local Sear's and Sam Club got some nice deals on Falken Ziex 512, I had them (bought from a different dealer though) and they served me well for my "spirited" driving

rain traction is alright.

195/70/14? why not go for 205/60/14. it doesn't cost much more but i will have a lower profile look.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing as well. I have a rear wheel drive Tacoma w/out 4X4, it's a BTCH to drive in the snow. Any suggestions?

This is a very hard question to answer. What kind of car is it, what is your driving styles, what kind of money do you have to spend, how long do you need the tire to last you, and there are so many more then just to give the size and expect one to give you a answer. Best thing to do is go to goodyear and not thoes cheap o tire barns. At goodyear you will most likely get a trained person that knows tires. The cheap tire barns hire on kids that will not know as much because they dont pay and you get what you pay for. Same with walmart. greatplace to get a cheap oil change but wouldnt expect for you to go in there and tell them what your needs are on a tried and hve them take the time to explain your options.

When you go to goodyear tell them what it is your looking for and wanting to spend and if they are any good will point you in the right direction. Sears may be a good place as well. And how would I know this? I worked at goodyear and at sears as a tire jocky getting my start to becoming a mechanic.

I have a 2001 Chev Cavalier Sedan. I would probably rate my driving style as aggressive. Would like to spend no more than $50 or $60 per tire.

I don't think I really need a H speed rating... my current ones have a S rating.

Also, what about what andy said about getting 205/60/14 tires? Would that be acceptable for my car?

195/70/14 has a limited choice for tires. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A H are about as good as there gonna get for the price they are at (they have 60k miles tread warranty if that matters). These tires compare very well to Bridgestone RE950 (unfortunately the RE950 don't come in that size), which in comparisons on tirerack, the RE950 only scores hairs higher than the Traction T/A.

Dedicated, studded snow tires and about 500 pounds of sand in the bed.

i posted a similiar question for tires, but only asked about Walmart tires.

my size is 185/65r14 tires.

i bought the Goodyear viva touring 80k miles for $61 + $10 mounting/balancing/lifetime flat repair/etc. it says "4 wide circumferential grooves channel water away from the tire for maximum traction in the rain. "

i chose that over the goodyear viva2 60k because people reported that it had bad wet traction, even though traction rating = A. (The original Viva tires SUCKED in rain because it had a traction rating = B.)

i looked at tirerack and decided not to buy there because i had to take the tires to walmart anyway to get it mounted/balanced. but it'll be a hassle to get it replaced under warrenty if the tire doesnt last the 60k. (ie: bubble in the tire)

edit: BF Goodrich Traction T/A is $59 at Tirerack. it gave 4 stars to warrenty rating, but what does that equate to in miles warrenty?

you should not buy tires based soley on what tread life rating it gets. this is a bad habit to get into when buying tires imo. buy tires based on noise, comfort, and most important of all, how well they stop in the wet and dry. tires are not something you want to skimp on, and they usually do not, in most cases, live up to the tread life warranty anyhow. I should say I've never heard of viva tires. Brands i stick with nowadays are bridgestone and bfgoodrich.

I heard really good things about the Fuzion Zr1's. They are made by Bridgestone, but marketed as Fuzion brand. Look into them. Also, I believe tread ratings are only relative to the same brand tire, so they mean nothing when comparing brands.

goodyear makes the viva model. (edited above post)

hm..thought traction = A means there's no sliding when slam on the brakes in light rain? this is the same for all tires that have a 'A' rating?

If they are Bridgestone, they gotta be good!

I have Potenza 730 Gen2's on my car and I love them to death.. super grippy and stable tires, but kinda loud.... oh well, that's what you get for Z rated tires

goodyear viva touring 80k- so far so good in light rain. no slippage when doing a jack rabbit start. no sliding when doing short stops

you don't want my advice, i bought a pair of $210 performance tires (224/45/18). they are directional, and are going to be a bitch to replace because i can't rotated too much and they wear out quickly. $840 for a new set is gonna hurt in a few years.
