I am looking at buying a Remington 1911 R1 in January. Does anyone have hands experience with the R1? If so, what is your opinion?

I was considering the Rock Island 1911, but the local store has an R1 in stock.

Also, I would like to add a light to the R1, but the pistol does not have a rail on it. Does anyone care to suggest a light kit that I can use without a rail, or maybe an add-on rail? I saw a rail system that clamps on the bottom of the 1911, but I do not know how well that kind of system works.

I am also interested in opinions about the Remington R1 1911. My only experience was holding one at a gun show.

The price is definitely good and Remington seems to be a good company.

If you want to have a gun mounted light you pretty much have to get one with an integral rail. I haven't seen any good kits that mount in another way, and you really do not want a poorly mounted light in case you ever have to use it.

Otherwise I don't have too much feedback on the R1. it looks like a decent gun, probably on par with most of the entry level 1911's on the market. What are you planning on using it primarily for?

I'm going with "Defending himself and his family when the End of Days finally arrives".

Just googled it, haven't seen that one before, it's cool it's got a flat mainspring housing like the original 1911 and WW1 style wood grips, but it's got the 1911A1 style trigger and lengthened grip safety, I've not fired one (obviously) but I really like the design it's classic but with modern touches.

Good choice.

Mostly for poking holes in targets.

When the occasional hurricane passes though, I would like to have something that is reliable for home and property defense.

A 9mm would be cheaper for targets and a pump shotgun would be better for home defense.

Sounds to be like you just want to buy a gun because your reasoning/justification is pretty shitty.

How much are you spending? You could probably get a range toy + shotgun for less.

I already have two 9mm pistols and a mossberg 590. In fact, I have an AR15 with a red dot scope and a 200 lumen surefire light between my computer desk and my bed.

You should keep your crappy opinions to yourself. I have a job, my bills are paid, and if I want to buy myself a new toy, that is none of your business.

My birthday is in January, I think that is justification enough to buy myself a new firearm.

Budget is up to $700.

As stated above, I already have a shotgun.

The R1 is a new 1911 (released last year I think, surprised it took Remington so long to release a 1911) which is why reviews are so thin.

If you're set on getting a railed 1911, RIA might be the way to go within your budget. Taurus makes railed 1911s as well but I'm not sure about their quality.

For $700 I'd find a Ruger SR1911. I've handled the R1 and I don't like it. It's by far not the worst 1911 i've held, but it's not worth what they are asking.

Thank you.

I am not dead set on getting a railed 1911, I might get some tritium night sights instead of a light. Lights work both ways.

The price is one of the things with remington. There for a long time their shotgun and rifles cost a fortune. the 870 exrpess has come down in price, but the model 700s are still expensive.

I figure part of the price of the R1, is the Remington name.

Taurus sucks. I broke one just handling it at the gun shop.

That's probably a good gun for that. You may even want to just look at getting a springfield GI spec or one of their loaded's. You don't get a rail on the springfields though until you get to the TRP/operator lines. The fit on the frame with the springfields is pretty good, can't tell you if it's better than the rem though.

Either way you go, you'll have room to customize later if you want to make it a better range pistol.

Springfield GI isn't bad aside from the sights: by default they have narrow low-profile blade sights that I found annoying even in a well-lit range. Para-Ordnance GI Expert is a good choice with contrast sights out-of-the-box, that's a solid 1911.

Night sights don't ID a target. If HD is going to be a use then you need a light on it. The RIA is a very good gun. They are reliable, cycle HP's well, and are cheap. They're plain with few frills but get the job done. Pretty much the perfect entry 1911, a cheap way to see if the platform is for you.

It's a new gun. Last time they made a 1911 was WW2? All I've seen is advertisements for them.

I've read of people who haven't had a problem with their taurus but have had problems with more expensive or "quality" manufacturers.

THey did seem to have an issue with the thumb safety at one point I think.

SA Range officer is around $700 i hear and reviews highly. I Have 2 SA 1911s and they are very nice guns.

I;ve heard not so good things about Para though

Some of the early para double stack 1911's had some issues with feeding that some were able to fix with higher strength springs. The new para's or upgraded ones I've heard are much better. The frame/slide fitment is very good as well, it was on par with my kimber.

Night sights don't ID a target.

You are both correct about id'ing the target. My ideal setup would be a light + tritium sights. I keep a 3 D cell maglight under my side of the bed, + an LED on the computer desk.

But since the R1 does not come with a rail,,, what can I do? I can either add an after market rail, something that clamps to the trigger guard, or buy a 1911 with a factory rail.

Something else I have not mentioned, I like to bring a pistol while camping on the deer lease or camping on the river. If something wonders into the camp site, I would like to be able to protect myself and the people that are with me. I have been carrying a beretta 9mm, but would like to upgrade. Mostly what I am concerned about are animals with rabies, coyotes, snakes,,, stuff like that.

^^Snakes don't get rabies. Just sayin'.

For the 1911 in particular I'd suggest factory rails from the get-go otherwise aftermarket rails will likely require frame machining and/or add more weight, and the 1911 is a heavy piece on its own. I don't really know about the lights that attach to other parts. I'd love to suggest a P14 Tactical or an SA Operator but they're way more expensive.

I;ve heard not so good things about Para though

The common thread seems to be that of pretty much anything else in mass production: there are good and bad product specimens. My personal experience with Para was pretty good and I've heard plenty of the same.
