YAGT: How can I start up a conversation...

OK, background. I'm pretty much a social retard. I've had 1 girlfriend in my life, and that ended very badly. I'm a freshman in college, double majoring in History (Ancient/Near East up to Classical Rome) and Anthropology (Linguistic & Archaeological). I run into interesting and very cute girls all the time. Sitting in the university center, class, and basketball games, but I don't know how to go sit down and "break the ice" so to speak. What are some good ice breakers or ways to start up a conversation?

I need help too. I suck at small talk. If *I* am bored by the things people suggest opening with, it's hard to think it'd be good to use. Just bringing up a random topic, even if it's something in common, without any particular reason, feels stupid to me (whether it works for others or not).

@ OP, if youre in school, use the "werent you in my X course?" This is a HUGE opener. Personally i dont use this anymore since these days confidence works wonders beyond any thing. Sadly i cant give you my confidence.

This is something I have issues with if its somebody I dont have anything in common with, like some girl i meet on the train or something. If a girl is by herself, its alot easier for me, but when they travel in packs im screwed.

What kind of job are you planning on getting with Ancient History and Anthropology major, anyway? Planning on become the next Indiana Jones?

Answer to all YAGT as I am now 35 years old.

1) You have no idea how many women thought you were the shiznit, but because you didn't do anything you got nothing.

2) They don't fall into your lap. You have to initiate and act first...sorry dude, that's the way it is. Do something.

3) Hi, wanna go out? goes a long way.

Try asking them a question that lets them talk about themselves a little bit, then whatever they say might give you enough info to continue talking rather than sitting there like "derr... I'm sitting with a girl!!!1!"
Try to loosen up and not overanalyze the situation or make it out as more than it is.
