Dropped wife off to get her hair done, and wouldn't you know it's right next to the fun shop. So I went in looking for a 45, I already have a 9mm for daily use and am very familiar with Springfield XD series. I was surprised at the magazine count of the XD, nice.

It's primary purpose would be home defense. In my largish hands it felt good and being really familiar with the XD series the muscle memory kicked right in. It was exactly the same as my 9, only slightly bigger. Any thoughts for/against? I know, shoot it first and am going to borrow my buddies. I just love the safety features of this vs. Glock.

If I were to get a .45 I'd opt for a slick 1911 from Springfield or Kimber.

For daily carry I'd prefer a 9mm with 17 or 18 round capacity. Speer Gold dots are plenty lethal in that caliber, no need for the extra large bullet.

This is for home defense, I'm fine with my current carry one (XD 9). But given that I train with my XD 9, the muscle memory is there and that's appealing. Carry really isn't what I'm looking for.

I have to agree with the above. If I go with a 45 I want an STI. For home defense why not go with another 9mm XD? Good enough for carry, good enough for home.

ETA:

Come tot hink of it I think the .45 has just a touch less penetration than the 9mm.....So I might swing to a 45 for home defense.....

Para-Ordnance also makes a really nice 1911, the standard GI Expert has a reasonable price. Solid pistol. My hands are probably about as big but I'm not a fan of the XD.

The round count on the XD was surprising to me to say the least. The main reason with the XD was exactly the same as my 9, and there's a lot to be said for that.

For home defense in .45acp I'll go with the 1911. The greater weight of the all metal frame lends itself well to any situation calling for a good ol fashioned pistol whipping. I'm a big fan of the yawara and other devices that harden the hand, so it's a plus for me.

I'd say check out the CZ-97B first, it's worth it, but your comfort with the XD counts for a lot too. You gonna put a light on it?

Probably because most people think of the standard 1911 magazine which is single-stack. Para also makes the P14 double-stack model (guess how many rounds ) but it goes for significantly more coin. Maybe it's just me but I prefer one caliber per pistol model.

for me, the question would be: old school or new school? aka 1911 or USP.

if you haven't fired a USP, they are, in fact, the shit. maybe out of your price range, i can't remember what a 'standard' 45 goes for but it may be over a grand. i don't know if you can find a better shooting .45 without getting into 'race' 1911's.

Recoil is what you're going to have to adjust to. Might as well buy what you want. Shooting a Glock .45 vs a Glock 9mm is noticeably different.

i've shot a usp tactical and a glock 19 in the same range session. i know a 17 would be a better comparison, but the fact of the matter is that shooting speed, felt recoil, and accuracy (when firing repeat shots) were DAMN similar. ze germans know how to make a .45.

I <3 my Dan Wesson Valors. I usually carry my VBob daily. But then again, I've NEVER liked the XD's. Good guns, they just dont fit my hands.

What's your budget?

Austrians actually. I own a Glock 17 and have shot a model 21 on a couple occasions. Similar, yes. But if you're going to change carry weapons you're going to need to do some practice with the 21.

Both are great guns. I'm a Glock fan and would like to add a model 21 to my arsenal.

Nice guns, but large so only good if the hand can accommodate it. Mine aren't quite large enough for it, even in compact mode. Not a huge fan of the grips either, seems to slip in my hands. Otherwise I quite like it and will probably buy one some day to fill out my collection. :awe:

Also look at the FNP-45. I have a friend that's had one for some time and it feels nice in my hands. I've not had the chance to shoot it though, but heard good things.

ah, no, you misinterpreted me. i was saying i fired a 9mm sub glock alongside a 45 full USP- i was remarking that a 9mm fullsize glock would've been fairer comparison.

yes, apples to oranges- my point was that at the range, it didn't feel like it. nothing like shooting a typical 9mm vs a 1911. the USP is just a damn fine .45 weapon for shooting at the range or using for home defense. no, i wouldn't carry one. probably not even a compact.

good point. the friend that owns the gun is 6'2 i think and i'm 6'3. we both have pretty beefy hands and consider the HK to be very comfortable.

I actually think the comparison you made with the full-size .45 and the compact G19 speaks more than the G17 since bigger gun = more weight/contact = less felt recoil.

I agree about the USP. I tried the 9mm but it is built like a brick. The range rental was dirtier than sin but still fed like a pro (also 6' even, I'd say my hands are "largish" like the OP). Concealing one would be ridiculous but great for home defense.

I went from a 21 to 21SF - no complaints about either, though the integrated rail in the 21SF is pretty nice.

I'm not a fan of XD's at all but since you have one, are familiar with it, and like it I say stay with the platform and get one in .45.

How do you like it? I used to have an AutoOrdnance 1911 and I didn't really like it. It lacked the nice slick feel of my dad's Springfield and it wouldn't even feed hollowpoints.

well i definitely like the feel of it, i only have about 150 rounds through it at the moment. i havent tried hollow points yet, wanna get 350-500 rounds through it first. theres definitly some things i do want to do to it though, the ejector port needs some work. i get about 20% of the brass going to the right, 15% hitting me on the top of the head and the remainder all over the F'n place. some different sights, and possibly some other tweaks. but for now im loving it.
