1. Met girl at party. "Laura."
2. Danced with girl, did some West coast swing. She was a pretty good dancer.
3. / me been looking for a dance partner. As a general rule of thumb, and as part of ballroom etiquette, I tend to keep dancing separate from dating.
4. She was disappointed that I could not go dancing with her this upcoming weekend, because I have a wine tasting party that one of my former bosses' is throwing at his vineyard.
5. To be "nice" I said she could come along to the party. I didn't expect her to say "Yes."
6. She said "yes."

I think it'll be strange to go to my former bosses party with someone I just met and am clearly not dating, nor wanting to date. I screwed up. How do I back out of this courteously?

/me regrets offering in the first place now.

pick her up before the wine thing.

whip it out.

if she runs out of the car, problem solved. if she lays you, that ain't bad neither.

It would appear that he's simply an upper-class snob. Wine tastings and ballroom dancing Smells like old money. <== this reply to be taken tongue-in-cheek.

No I just got a strange vibe of "clingy."

My ex-business partner who I just fired tried to have an affair with me (PM me for old threads if you care). That was enough "clingy" for a lifetime.

Laura's a good dancer though, so I wouldn't mind dancing/competing with her, as long as it stays at that.

I am just NOT ready to have a serious relationship right now. I do enjoy dancing though, and having someone to dance with is exactly the thing I need to get back into.

Ballroom dancing is a sport to me, I competed in college. As for my old boss, yes, he is very rich. I am, on the other hand, not.

-----------

I guess I am just paranoid she might cross the line, as my ex business partner did. I just don't want to be dating anyone seriously right now.

uuuummm mm....wtf cares if you are dating her or not?
Why do you care if an ex boss cares?
I was not aware it was customary to bring someone you were "dating" to a wine tasting. In fact I thought it was the norm to bring a first/second/ third date or an acquaintance

Don't back out............

That was my initial intention, do I need to "inform" her that this is just friends? Or only inform her if she tries to cross the line?

Well said. I don't understand what the problem is. Don't want to date your dance partner? Is this kind of like not wanting to date someone in the office you work in?

If you bring it up, you will make the situation awkward and you will both have a crap time. Just go, be yourself and treat her like you would any female that is just a friend. If she makes a move that she wants something more than just friendship, tell her that while you are flattered, you are unavailable.

Yes, this keeps the dancing focused on the dancing, as I said, it's a sport.

If you think she has romantic expectations then be sure to drop some hints. If it's clear she is into you better to be straightforward about it. Just tell her you are not into dating anyone right now, but you'd love to have a good dance partner. If you think she isn't getting the message after all that, then avoid her.
