Oh yeah, and about how many rounds do you guys use on average at the range?

Really just sort of depends on if im tyring to be tight groups or just having fun plinking around. Also if its just me or if im with others. I'd say my usage ranges from 50-100 (semi-rarely up to 150) rounds of 357mag. and 100-250 rounds of 9mm. Thats usually how much of my ammo gets used up and lik ei mentioned theres different factors so i wouldnt say i also use the same amount each trip even with the same people.

Question...do new versions of guns come out every year? Like ipods/ipads/iphones, etc? I wanna get one, but want to make sure that i'm not getting one right before a revision comes out.

Oh yeah, and about how many rounds do you guys use on average at the range?

The vast majority of "updates" deal with ergonomics and appearances. Glock probably had the most frequent with three updates in ~20 years. SIG did their only significant refresh in the past few years with the Enhanced Ergonomics release, which changed the grip texturing and shape (in some cases) of their pistols, but the classic designs are still popular and available. You're more likely to see releases of completely new models each year.

I do 100 rounds minimum when going to the range, especially if I'm trying something new. I spent a few months in PA and tried out as many pistols as I could afford. Ideally I like 200-250. These are all for magazine-fed pistols, not a huge revolver fan.

Shop for ammo deals. Buying in bulk is the best approach. Russian steel-cased ammo is the cheapest you'll find, but make sure whatever you're buying is allowed where you shoot--some only allow brass-cased so they can collect it for reloading. Be willing to spend a little more for hollow-points if you plan to use your pistol for home defense. FMJ is designed to penetrate, you don't want those rounds going through walls.

Also, i intend to take classes, but in the meantime, can anyone recommend any videos or anything about gun safety?

Brian Hoffner from the grip video I posted has a lot of good videos about proper & efficient use. Here's the basic video on pistol safety.

I'll get a conversion kit eventually but I want something a little more powerful than a .22.

Well in terms of costs 9mm the best option. No one ever said shooting was a cheap hobby. Hopefully with the wars winding down we'll have a decent bit of military surplus.

Also if you want to get into it, there's reloading where you buy the components and make your own bullets. Takes time and considerable up-front costs (depending on the variety of press you choose), but the cost/round is lowered if done right and if you shoot a lot it's worth it financially.

But I wouldn't recommend that until you've had more shooting experience/figure out what you're doing. It's a whole other set of things of to learn.

I can point to the concealed carry permit statistics of the government of Texas. Here's the latest conviction rates among concealed carry permit holders (from 2009): http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/RSD/CHL/Reports/ConvictionRatesReport2009.pdf

Compare that to the number of concealed carry permit holders in Texas. 402,914
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/chl/reports/ActLicAndInstr/ActiveLicandInstr2009.pdf

The main page can be found here under "Reports & Statistics"
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/RSD/CHL/index.htm#

Edit: Fixed 2nd url, links to the correct pdf now.

and that doesn't even mean that those who were CHL holders used a gun or even had a gun on them at the time of the crime.

Not really. New guns will come out every year, some will get discontinued, and if there's been an issue with the gun a new "edition" might fix it. Small features might be added/taken away.

As far as typical additions go, Glock is the best example. It's been around since the mid-80s, and we're only on generation 4. New "versions" happen, but the gun world moves much slower than the computer world. We've pretty much perfected the fundamental art of launching supersonic balls of lead at each other.

Hell the CZ-75 first showed up in 1976.

1975 according to wiki, which would make sense, since it's a CZ 75 and not a CZ 76.

Also, the CZ 75 is based on the Browning Hi Power, which was designed in the 1920s.

It's just that it kinda kills me when I think about how much ammo costs. 9mm at $100 a box is $0.20 a round! I dunno if I'm comfortable with spending $50 in just bullets every time I'm there.

LOL! Has it just dawned on you that ammo is the actual expense of shooting?

I skipped the local gun show last weekend, but the last time I bought 9mm reload (1000rnds in a surplus steel ammo can), it was ~$140.

I dropped in on the LAX Firing Range parking lot sale last month, and they had 1000rnd reloads in a plastic ammo can for ~$180. I passed on the deal.

All of this is all-brass 9mm. Russian steel might be cheaper, but I don't use it.

Ammo aint cheap, but 9mm if you want to shoot something more than .22. Wait until you get into rifle ammo...

lol, it actually did suddenly dawn on me. My brother in law was talking about how cheap .22 ammo is and I figured it'd all be like that. Not even close!

Also, holy shit...reloaded 9mm ammo is that expensive? I thought reloaded would be way cheaper than regular. I thought regular 9mm ammo is ~$100/500 rounds.

Also, I'm not where near rifles or shotguns haha.

reloaded is usually cheaper. he said 1000 rounds, you are talking about 500 rounds. so $100 for 500 new rounds, or 140 for 1000 reloaded rounds. so he saved $60 over 1000 rounds of new ammo.
you also have to remember that some people may be talking in years when they say the last time they bought.

it also depends on where you are buying it from as well. some companies sell it for much lower than others. you really have to shop around.

check sites like ammoengine and ammoseek.

Don't ever buy a rifle. .308 or .30-06 is at least $.50 a round for cheap ammo, the good ammo (168 grain .308 for my M1A) is far closer to $1.00 a round.

$.20 per round is AMAZING to me. But I shoot .45, .41 magnum (I hand load that), .44 magnum, .308 win, .30-06 ammo meant for a garand (also, not cheap. Cannot use off the shelf ammo in a garand.)

My dad and uncle are pretty avid guns people, but I never really got into it. I used to (or rather, was told I had to) do a bit of Sporterifle (spelling intended), which is competitive .22 rifle target shooting.

Although, you know you're crazy about it when you're like my dad or uncle, and you make your own ammo (or perhaps you would consider that being cheap haha). I remember my dad would melt down the fired bullets and just recast them. I also remember the bullet presses all too fondly... mostly because I've jammed my finger in them a time or two when I was much younger.

223/5.56 can be had cheaper than the 30 cals.

I just ordered 5250 rounds of federal 22lr for $160 shipped. That will hold me over for a bit.

Bought the same from Dunn's. Should be fun out of MP5 clone.

Same. I still have ~7700 in a 50 cal ammo can that I have as an emergency supply as well as another 4k of various kinds as well, but half of that would be match grade stuff, so I was pretty low on the plinking types. Wish I stocked up more when they were still under 2 cents a round at walmart (see 7700 above. 14 boxes worth of federal 550 boxes).

Bulk is the way to go.

.22 is so damn cheap! It's just that it doesn't feel as awesome as something a little bigger.

Then go 12 gauge and start shooting clays. Walmart usually has 250 economy packs of 12ga 8 shot for ~22 a box. But then you have to pay for clays. If you want to go big, you pay for it. Its like people who buy trucks or sports cars and then complain about gas. Well fuck, you should have gotten an econobox then (22lr).

EDIT: I try to regulate the rounds I stock. 22lr, 12ga, 9mm, 223/5.56 and 308 but have novelties like the desert eagle for the fun factor but I can still have a blast taking my 22lr's out for hours. Either plinking at dualing stands or miniature steels or concentrating by trying to go long distance (200 yards plus).

I think i have more fun shooting my .22 Savage BTV than any of my other guns.
That thing is super accurate and I love it! I would never trade or sell it.
