Wonder if its worth an extra $25 to get the 20" barrel and no barrel band (I believe this is the one exdeath referred to earlier). I think I can track one down around here. It's just that under $250 seems cheap, above that and I'm starting to spend more than I wanted for an "impulse" purchase.

Just get the basic one for 229. Then spend the extra money on a scope (22's can use cheap scopes fyi). The basic 10/22 will be able to offer more than you can for quite awhile and quite a lot of rounds down range. Once you are experienced and truly wanting the "next" level you'd want a bull barrel and different stocks anyways.

Or just take that 229 10/22 and plop the 25 bucks in an upgrade part like a new hammer, auto bolt release, or something. Personally id go 10/22 then get a scope for it and have fun!

As said before I'd get magazines (BX-25). You can always get the rifle later, esp a 10/22 as its not considered evil and scary and most bans seem to exempt 22s and rimfire from the "semi auto with detachable magazine" definition of an "assault weapon"

30 for a BX-25 is normal price more or less. Some places might have them slightly cheaper (midwayusa is 25 bucks but are OOS) but you can find them for 30 in a few places (dunns has them in stock for 30 right now)

As for that being a "deal" it depends on what scope and if hes done anything to the rifle, round count, condition, ect. If its BNIB with a 70 scope then its a decent deal (in that no paperwork and no sales tax). If its seen a few thousand rounds and has a 50 dollar scope the no its not a good deal

Question: what is a good price for one of those magazines? I've seen $30 recently. Also, theres a "deal" for a ruger 10/22 (he said it was black) with a scope for $299. Good or not good?

$30ish is reasonable. $20-25 = great deal if you can find them. Most local places had them for $25 before the panic.

As for the scope probably not. Most deals like that give an appealing looking package when it's really like a $200 base rifle with a $30 no name Chinese scope for $299.

See what the best prices are on the model rifle and scope separately.

Oh yeah, I keep hearing about building one from scratch. Is this viable? How much would it cost if I did go this route, assuming i'm not getting uber parts?

Wouldnt be any cheaper than buying the 229 one most likely. You could probably find the parts cheaper but if you dont have the proper tools for attaching the barrel and the such (or the skills) you are going ot have ot pay a gunsmith or buy other things.

Most of the guys who "build" a 10/22 are using high quality parts and are building a rifle to meet a specific need. You could theoretically build a basic one. People sell the stock barrel and stocks on ebay pretty frequently. hell theres a barrel and stock there for ~75 right now and the trigger groups go for ~60-70. That puts you at 150 or so before buying having to buy the receiver and bolt. Of major note is the receiver HAS to go through an FFL unless you find it local, so theres the FFL transfer fee. So as you can see you can probably build one cheaper, but not by much over the 229 models.

People who do build them generally upgrade the trigger groups, stocks, and barrels so those are pretty easy to find right out of the gate. If i were to build one i'd get a good drop in trigger (~200), a nice bull barrel (~150-250), and well other than that who knows, i actually dont mind the stocks on the rugers but as you can see id be in for almost 450 bucks in basic upgrades, though i could sell the barrel and factory trigger stuff to recoup some of the cost

Youll be happy with it! So many upgrade options that are super easy and basic that you can make it a super nice rifle. Eventually get a $50 hammer and the trigger pull goes to a crisp and smooth 2.5lb (least in mine it did). Then things like an extended mag release is a huge improvement.

Thats actually one of the nicest things about a 10/22. It works great stock. But if you want to get into changing things its a pretty basic setup to go in and change things. Its an awesome gun for a beginner "gunsmith" (not the right term but nothing else comes to mind). You can literally change any part one it and theres videos and guides explaining how to do it and other info. It gives you a really good basic idea of how a rifle works and you can apply it to pretty much any other rifle. Although it wont be as easy or simple in a lot of cases as a 10/22. Its also a gun the just lasts. You can read stories all over of people with 30+ year old 10/22's that are still tack drivers and havent had nay issues.

Well had another fun day at the range!

Got my 45-70 sighted in. I got a limbsaver for it as well. Only had 30 rounds to shoot and shot them all. The limbsaver made a HUGE difference. Shoulder didnt hurt at all and i was actually wishing i had more ammo to be able to keep shooting! This is definitely one of my favorite guns now!

Took the sig with some 147 reloads and used it with my osprey45. Worked like a champ this time around. Will say it doesnt eject the brass far at all. Normally my sig tosses the cases probably 6 feet away or so, with the suppressor on it was just sort of plopping them a foot away (and right into my range bag) so thats an added bonus!

Other than that tried out the 10/22 with its suppressor and standard velocity 22 ammo. Works perfectly and was impressed. Previously all id had was the high veolcity which goes supersonic out of the 10/22 (but doesnt in a pistol). Had fun shooting it at 100 yards but it was a bit windy so couldnt get that great of groups.

My top three would be a M&P Shield in 9mm, the new Springfield XDs in 9mm, or a Colt Defender in 9mm.

It was more a military cartridge but i also saw plenty of use in hunting buffalo and other big game. Its actually a pretty impressive round for the time it was developed. The 45-70 with a 500 grain bullet was lethal out to 3500yards and the Sandy Hook tests showed the shooters could actually hit targets at the range as well.

anyone know a good place to get 10-round, 9mm magazines for a stoeger/beretta cougar? standard capacity is 15 for 9mm, which is what most places online seem to sell.

Holy fuck, thats amazing.

its actually a pretty good read and pretty damn impressive. All took place in 1879. Shooters were using iron sights (granted iron sights back then were a lot different than todays) and were able to hit a 6 foot bulleye at 2500 yards. With crappy 7 pound triggers too! The hit ratio was nothing ot write home about (like 5 shots in 80?) but still pretty impressive!

If you are going to be sticking to the stock open sights, the fiber optic ones are better than the non fiber optic stock sights. I have scope or tech sights on all my 10/22s though, so I have never shot one with the Ruger fiber optics.

I have a few of them, and they aren't bad. I find I don care all that much about the weight of them when I am using them.

A friend of mine is looking to sell some guns.

What's a fair price for:

A Gen 3 Glock 17 with a laser scope?

A Sig P229 40 cal?

Thanks!
