Got my press set up for .223 yesterday and prepped about 100 .223 cases last night. Have bullets but can't actually load anything for lack of powder. I bought some H380 kind of assuming that any rifle powder would work tolerably well in any rifle, but apparently that one is good for practically everything except for .223. TIL.

Also, prepping rifle cases is kind of a PITA.

Thats exactly the opposite of my problem.. I've had powder for months now, finally got primers last week, but I still have no bullets for 9mm..

Walther PPQ M2 - My latest. Smooth, light trigger with short reset. The only thing I don't care for is the mag release. I have a tendency to hit it when fires. I just need to train more with it.

Ah, you missed it then, a week ago Natchez had Berry 115 gr plated bullets in stock at $74/1k, I got a box. My LGS is doing fine on factory ammo and primers but their selection of powder and bullets is still really limited.

Yeah I actually saw that and almost bought it.. I've been shooting 124/125 grain for a long time so I wanted to stick with that. I've got 2k ordered already for $70/k shipped, so now I'm just waiting. Hopefully they'll be here in the next week or two

I've been less than impressed with Walther's "Americanization" of their product lines this year. The first pistol I ever fired was an early model P99, and the release lever setup was one of the big distinguishing features. I prefer DA/SA like the P99 and have been warming up to the PPQ...but I draw the line at the release.

I prefer the M2 release over the original Euro mag release. I had that on my H&K P30 and hated it.

Prepping rifle cases is annoying the first time for sure. But once you have them trimmed you can shoot them 3-5 times (or more) before having to worry about trimming them again. Might even be longer depending on your chamber and what you have been loading to charge wise. Like my bolt gun (308) the cases started at 2.005" and after three firings are up to ~2.010" (max being 2.015") so I know i can get 4 firings out my 308 brass per a trimming. 223 if its only your brass is the same idea really. But i share brass with my dad so i just trim after every range trip....which is only ~100 rounds which doesnt take long at all to trim.

O and now you know dont just buy powder cause its there Midsouth Shooters lets you put back orders on powder still so might be worth tossing one up now to get at some point (in a year at the rate things are going lol). Otherwise its just a waiting game for them to come in stock. Thankfully i got 32lbs of WC-844 (surplus powder) in Septemeber and that will last me a long time. Im a low volume 223 shooter

Anyone have anything to say about the DPMS LR308?

Looking to pick up a AR10 and Walmart had this for $907.

Previously had a Armalite or S&W M&P 10 in mind at $1300+.

I have heard good things on the LR308. Seems DPMS does better quality on their 308's then their AR15's. One advantage over the armalite (or it used to be) is that the DPMS guns can all use pmags. Unless it has changed Armalite can not and you have ot use their mags. The M&P10 i have only heard great things about but dont know anything about.

If it was me i would go for a DPMS pattern rifle since they seem to be a little more popular over the armalite pattern so you should be able ot find parts a bit easier. And the access to more types of magazines is nice.

Not sure what model MP10 you were looking at but i have seen them in the 1100-1200 range from time to time. (for what i believe is the entry model)

I can't decide whether its gonna be worth it to try and sort brass by how many times its been fired or just check them every time. I guess I really need to get some kind of case length gauge to use also instead of holding it up to the calipers every time. Do you anneal the brass after several firings?

Yeah I don't think I can quite justify buying 8+ lbs of powder at this point to make it worth the hazmat fee, so I guess I'll be playing a waiting game with the LGS.

No on the annealing. It just another thing I dont care to do. Brass is cheap enough to just replace over annealing imo.

As for sorting...canthelp us there lol. All I do is load up all my brass (which for 223 is only around 1k). Then as I shoot it I check 5 or 6 pieces to see if they are over max. If not they just get loaded up again. I only shoot 100 at a time and have 100 round plastic cases so it easy to keep them as 100 round "lots". I might not know if the brass is on firing 2 or 8 but I know each lot of 100 is under max length. When it is time to trim its only 100 at a time which isn't bad at all.

As for the hazmat fee...8lbs isn't that much when doing rifle. Like 308 a pound only gets you 150 rounds or so. 223 a pound gets ya 280ish. But I also like having plenty on hand and usually do 48 pound purchases on powder and just store the extra till needed.

lol, yeah, 1 lb isn't a "lot", but I don't really have 1 grand or so lying around to drop on 48 lbs of powder. Maybe in a few years.

lol true. And its hard to do now even if you wanted! Well unless you are willing ot pay jacked up prices (see powder valley for what your powder *should* be costing as they didnt raise them a cent mind you they were always the lowest but gives ya an idea).

I was really lucky as i got on a trip and was working 7/12's for 6 months straight pretty much. plus another 6 weeks of 6 10's. So i had plenty of overtime money and pre diem . being single it was easy to put half into savings, then take a quarter and dump it into components and a couple guns too. The other quarter went to buying random things and honestly being like where the hell did i spend that money lol.

but right now the focus is on guns, skiing, backpacking, and hiking. Thankfully one of those is out of season and two more of them are free minus gas and food

$15 a box for remanufactured ammo is ridiculous. pretty sure i;ve seen people post that they got new 9mm factory ammo for that price or less.

I would agree but at least it's in stock

If I were completely out and wanted to hit the range you could get raped much worse than that...

Gone forever. And why should they go back? They know people will pay these prices without thinking twice about it. Its our fault.
Hell, I just paid $130+ (with hazmat fees) for 2k small rifle WOLF primers. Only other choice was to not load ammo, at all. Those primers would have cost something like $60 before (with hazmat fees).

Ummm, my LGS (which is high, but not ludicrous, on ammo prices) has 1k boxes of CCI 41 primers for about $35.
