Personally I would choose the M&P Shield over the Bodyguard any day. But if double action is really something you want then the Shield won't cut it.
The Shield is almost the same size as my Glock.

The Bodyguard is much smaller and could fit in a pocket easily.

Anyone have a S&W Bodyguard 380?

I messed with one at the gun store today. I really liked it. I wouldn't mind having a smaller concealed carry. I currently have a Glock .45 subcompact, but it is pretty thick and very heavy when the mag is fully loaded.

I like that the Bodyguard is double action only (DAO) and the hammer can be re-struck with another pull of the trigger if the round doesn't go off. The trigger pull was very heavy, but I think I would like that for a concealed carry.

I liked it better than the Ruger LCP. The Smith just felt better and more solid.

I do. The trigger is long and VERY heavy, the safety is ridiculously stiff, and the laser is difficult to activate. However, despite the gripes, I really enjoy it. The size is excellent, the trigger is predictable and relatively smooth, and the fit & finish are wonderful. For the intended purpose - a point-blank bad guy stopper, I wouldn't feel under-gunned carrying it.

They're two completely different guns. The M&P Shield is a subcompact, but still "IWB-size" 9mm. It's too big for pocket carry for most people, but handles more like a full-size gun than most other small 9s.

The Bodyguard is a pocket-size 380. It's significantly thinner, lighter, and the ergonomics aren't up to par with the Shield. Even with the magazine extension, you can still only get two fingers on the grip.

While either one could fill either roll, the Shield is more of a main carry gun while the Bodyguard is more of a backup or deep concealment gun.

I like the lcp cuz its body is smooth and draws nicely even from a pocket holster. But the trigger is heavy and most people hate shooting it.

I am interested in a .454 Casull revolver.

Looking to decock yourself?

http://www.pe.com/local-news/san-be...ocked-gun-in-waistband-goes-off-kills-man.ece

A 22-year-old San Bernardino man’s fatal self-inflicted gunshot happened while he was carrying a revolver in his waistband with the hammer cocked, police say.

Davion Titus accidentally shot himself at 6:04 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, outside his apartment at 3025 North Golden Avenue.

“It must have dislodged,” Sgt. Gary Robertson said of the single-action Freedom Arms 454 Casull. “The only way that goes off is with the hammer cocked.”

Titus had been sitting outside the apartment with a woman when she heard a noise, prompting Titus to retrieve the gun from his apartment and search for the source of the noise, Robertson said. Apparently satisfied that there was no threat, Titus returned to the woman and sat back down with the large-caliber revolver in his waistband, said Robertson.

The couple chatted for a bit, then Titus moved to his right, accidentally causing the gun to fire, Robertson said.

Titus died at the scene.

A single action revolver, hammer cocked on a loaded chamber = asking for trouble.

http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/how-to-load-a-single-action-revolver/

Not to mention it was a .454 Casull! Kind of an insane self-defense weapon in the first place (unless you're defending yourself against, say, bears, and last time I checked dangerous game was not a major issue in San Bernadino). I have to think he hit his femoral artery and bled to death within a minute. Ugh.

Shot my first competition today. It was a carbine/pistol competition. Damn it was fun, absolutely worth the money and the time. And it definitely showed me where I need to improve my shooting

Quick question: What's the most basic, most reliable, most easy-to-use pistol a beginner can keep for personal home/self-defense?

I haven't read most of this thread so sorry if this has already been asked.

Probably a Glock.

My vote goes to the Smith & Wesson M&P series. Something in 9mm is still cheap enough for plinking, but still potent enough for home/self-defense. They're very reliable, and easy to use. IIRC, you can get most of them with or without a safety to suit your preferences.

A revolver is the simplest and easiest to use handgun. Ruger and S&W both make very reliable guns.

barely if at all more reliable than a glock

my DAO revolver will cycle without firing if you don't let the trigger out enough, and its ALOT of trigger

its also much harder to shoot accurately with relatively fast shots

IMO the M&P changes too much, and there have been nasty recalls lately

glock all the way

the 4th gens have had a few replacement parts issued, but most of them aren't big issues, like guns firing followup shots on their own :/

Not to start an argument here, but what "nasty recalls" are you talking about? The only M&P recall in recent years was the Shield and the recall was simply because the trigger could occasionally become a standard one piece trigger.. That definitely isn't nasty in any way

lol I have never heard of a problem with the M&P series (other than the recent issue with the Shield, a new gun). I own one, so I do somewhat pay attention.

I just love the 'buy a gen 4 glock, M&Ps have problems!' post though. I mean, it's not like gen 4 glocks had a recall or anything. The glock fan boys are almost, and I mean almost, as annoying as the Apple/Microsoft crowd. Glocks are good guns. M&Ps are good guns... no need to get an erection over it.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. I figured a Glock would be a solid choice, but I wanted to hear other people's suggestions. I'll take a look at at the Glock, the M&P series, and some revolvers. Hmm... maybe an M&P revolver?

Come to think of it, I know I wouldn't use the gun only for self defense; I'd probably take it out to the range every now and then to shoot as well. I don't want to buy a gun that uses expensive ammo. With that in mind, what is the cheapest kind of ammo that's still effective? (as in, not BB gun ammo )

After doing a little bit of homework, I understand that .22 stuff is cheapest, then it gets more expensive as you move onto .25, .32, .38, etc, etc. Is this correct?

And in simple terms: What is the difference between single-action and double-action revolvers? Looking at Ruger's website, they have both kinds. The single-action guns appear to be older and more classical looking, whereas the double-action revolvers look more modern.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge. I just want to make sure I understand the basics.

If I were to buy something right now, what do you think about the Ruger LCR? Looks pretty simple, it's small, and the .22 LR variant is relatively cheap. In reality I probably won't be buying a gun for a little while but I was just curious.

Any modern , big name handgun will work just find and be easy to use. FN, HK, Sig, S&W, Springfield, Ruger, glock, and im sure a couple others im forgetting all have basic guns that are all going to be just fine and be reliable as can be. All offer models that might seem different but its mostly features like safeties that are different. one might have no safety and others have trigger and thumb, ect.

Anytime you ask an open ended question all you will get is opinions. Everyone has their brand they think is the best but the reality is for the average person there is no functional difference in the guns and it all comes down to cosmetics (grip angles, lego block look, ect)

After doing a little bit of homework, I understand that .22 stuff is cheapest, then it gets more expensive as you move onto .25, .32, .38, etc, etc. Is this correct?

More or less yes. The smaller the round, the cheaper it will be. However some 32acp can be as expensive as .380 and 9mm. NATO rounds are going to be a bit cheaper (9mm and 45acp type).

And in simple terms: What is the difference between single-action and double-action revolvers? Looking at Ruger's website, they have both kinds. The single-action guns appear to be older and more classical looking, whereas the double-action revolvers look more modern.

Well you have three types. All three are still made so i wouldnt call one older or newer though when looking at guns.

Single Action (SA) - Basically you have to cock the hammer for every shot. Its "single action" is to release the hammer into the firing pin to fire the bullet. In a semi-auto after the first shot, the slide will cock the hammer for you. In a revolver youll be doing the cocking every time.

Double action only (DAO) - Basically each time you pull the trigger the hammer cocks itself and then fires. There is no SA function at all. Even in a semi auto each shot will require the DA trigger pull.

Double Action/Single action - Combines both. I would say this is the most popular type in handguns for modern guns. In a semi-auto the first shot can be DA and after that shot the slide will cock the hammer leaving you SA for the remaining shots and even after reloading (slide will be in the rear position so the hammer is cocked). In a revolver....basically you pick which way you want to go. You either cock the hammer for each shot for your SA, or you can shoot each shot in DA.

If I were to buy something right now, what do you think about the Ruger LCR? Looks pretty simple, it's small, and the .22 LR variant is relatively cheap. In reality I probably won't be buying a gun for a little while but I was just curious.

The lcr are nice hammerless guns. Nice for carrying

How that guy could afford a $3K specialty revolver, I don't know. His last post on Facebook read:

"Bord. Lonly. Hungry. Tha way to fix this. Go grocery shoppn, get mi kids, and kook for all of us.. N that order..."

I feel bad for the two kids he leaves behind.
