Yikes, I didn't realize 9mm FMJ was up to 26 cents per round at Walmart. I just bought an entire 1000 round case for $200 even last night.

I went to a gunshow today and there was a brand new S&W MP15 5.56/.223 carbine (not the cheap Sport version w/out dust cover and forward assist) for $899 plus sale tax.

Was that too good to be true? I don't remember new AR from any good brand was for less $1K before tax (maybe except online stores with special but then you have to pay shipping plus transfer fees/etc.).

You guys have good sporting departments at your Walmarts. Ours never had any brass 9mm in stock, only the cheap steel ones.

so i went to a group shoot with a bunch of people yesterday (big outdoor range) and holy crap i want to get more guns now

front runners are a .22 pistol for plinking, .22 rifle for long range plinking, 12ga shotgun, and some type of scary black rifle (does .223 vs 5.56 matter?)

also i have no idea what cost vs. quality are like for these things. open to suggestions!

get 5.56 as you can shoot 223 out of 5.56 but not the other way around.

Shooting with a group of people is always fun. Love going and getting to shoot every ones guns and seeing what you do like or dislike. or getting to shoot a 50 cal for fun and not having to pay to rent one

As for what i would recommend.

22lr pistol (300-500 depending on models)
-Ruger MKIII, MKII, or 22/45. All are similar with minor differences. Sort of the standard for a 22lr IMO and tons of options
-browning Buckmarks. Great guns but i know nothing about them
-S&W MP22... great guns for a more modern look
-Ruger SR22...another great gun for modern looks.

22lr Rifle (you have TONS of options here) (200-400)
-Ruger 10/22...cheap (220 for basic models) and they just work. I would call this the standard in 22lr semi auto's. Can literally change the entire gun with after market parts
-Savage MKII series bolt actions. Accurate out of the box and not to expensive (200-300)
-Ruger American Rimfire 22lr...uses the same mags as a 10/22 so makes a great companion as you dont have to buy different mags. Accurate too.
- Youc an get something like a S&W MP15-22. Fun for plinking but not that great if shooting for groups

AR-15's (500-unlimited lol)...get something that shoots 556. no reason not to. Really any big name will be great. Palmetto state armory offers great guns for the price. M&P15's are great options too. Theres so many options at all price points it is really hard to pick one. Also depends what you want. Just a fun plinker...anything will do. Something for shooting further out..you want a 18" or 20" barrel. Going for as much accuracy as possible...then get a 223 Wylde chambered gun (shoots 556 and 223 but the chamber is slightly different than a standard one).

I tried to put prices as well. 22's are cheap...ars have huge spread in prices

Put a Bushnell trs25 on it and a volquartsen mark ii trigger and it becomes the best 22 handgun I have fired. Extremely quick to target, dead on target every time, just sweet! Oh, and try to buy a few more magazine because you will go through ammo very quickly

CZ makes some really nice looking .22 bolt action rifles.

I forgot about those But they are a bit more expensive than the other options. Seems like they run 450-500 for the ones ive seen (granted i am no expert with cz's!) My dad has two of them and they are both quite accurate. He has the CZ 455 i think it is an the Lux version. Both in 22lr (one has sights the other doesnt).

Like all guns there are hundreds of possible options. I simply listed some of the more common ones.

Love my 22/45 lite! Especially with the suppressor on Shoots great stock but looking forward to adding aftermarket parts too it. Though will say putting it back together the first time was....interesting

PSA had some deals this weekend where you could put together an AR15 for ~$560, sans shipping and FFL transfer fee. If you want a good, inexpensive AR15 I suggest you camp their website for weekend and daily deals.

I wasn't reading this thread because I thought it was about Sigs or something. Then I realized it had grown like 128 pages since then. Holy hell.

Suggest retitling to "Jesus's middle name is Gun."

I need some grips for my CZ clone from some other thread that I wouldn't have made if I had realized this was 'the' gun thread. Anyone got recommendation? CZ-75 compact grips, preferably slim. I like Hogues, but I'd have to cut down full-size CZ grips.

Thinking about wood just 'cause I never use wood grips. But not gonna spend 100 bucks on grips.

Academy has AR's for 599 in stock.

It's hard for me to understand how some of you guys still talk about 'the shortage' when I live in Tennessee and am not noticing one. It's still hard to find handgun ammo at Walmart. That's about it...but, you know...fuck Walmart.

Oh, and still a run on .22, I think...but...you know...fuck .22.

I said in my previous post "good brand" AR and I don't think DPMS ($599 @ Academy) is a good brand such as Colt IMO.

If I have the know how to put it together, I would love to do it.

Anyone got opinions on VZ grips? I really don't want to spend this much, but they make ones with varying levels of aggressive grip and I gotta admit, some of their patterns are pretty swanky, too.

I will probably try the Hogue rubbers I mentioned just because they're cheap and I know I like them. But pending a trip to the range, this could become a carry gun and I tend to believe those that say concealing a gun with sticky grips is not the greatest idea. VZ 'Frags' seem to be the CC recommendation. Both for moderate grip without being sandpaper, and they're 1.2" thick, which is about the thinnest I'm seeing. Aluminums are in the 1.1-1.2 range.

Synla- Maybe I'm AR-ignorant, but I thought DPMS was considered a reliable brand, even if obviously not the best. Colt is just overpriced, IMO.

But in the same breath I'm talking about parts for a $350 CZ-75...so our opinions are probably gonna differ. I'm happy to shy away from the big names if I think sufficient quality available for large monetary savings.

This is just based purely on my opinion/research and not facts by any mean.

Not saying DPMS is "bad", I rather pay a little more for a rifle that I feel comfortable with but not $2K to $3K for a rifle or even more. Just too much $ for my blood. My maximum budget for a AR is $1.5K.

That's why I purchased a Glock instead of a Taurus for my CCW handgun even the Taurus was over $100 cheaper. Nothing was wrong with the Taurus, I just feel the Glock would fit me better.

Here is my list of AR brands IMO:

LMT - top dog
Colt - middle
DPMS/Bushmaster/Rock River - lower

I am sure all of them will go bang if you take care/clean them properly and use good ammo. That's how I buy all my things. Not the cheapest or the most expensive but the middle that I feel fit my needs the most.

Heh, same thing I thought. Went up quite a bit. So much for Walmart not raising ammo prices. Btw, where'd you get 1000 rounds for $200?
Classifieds. People seem to be unloading their personal stashes for cheap.

are their AR's pretty good? I have seen them and almost ordered parts a few times, but I have no feedback on their quality and havent had time to search about them on arfcom

I have no real idea what all parts I would need, but I figure if I can get a great deal on a decent lower and upper I can go from there

dude I havent seen FMJ 9mm anywhere in store local to me in about 10 months, dicks had some in stock for about 2 days and walmart clears out same day if they even have any

lately all i have seen pistol wise in stock is 44 mag and 45acp

.

Colt is 'good' because of their name. They are not really any better than Rock River(great rifles per $$) and DPMS

THey put some nicer parts on their stock rifles, chrome lined heavier barrel for example, but its nothing you cant put on a 'cheaper' rifle for probably a little less

IMO

they are nothing special at all.

and of couse they QC is well known

Probably bought it on a credit card for $500 lol

Shortage has long passed. Wal-Mart just gets so little ammo at a time that the resellers can keep on top of it and flip their three boxes a day on gunbroker, armslist, etc

This is what the folks at AR15.com said (their words, not mine):

BMW/Mercedes Benz/Porche/Lexus = BCM/Noveske/LaRue/Colt/LMT/KAC/H&K

Honda/Jeep/Toyota/Ford = S&W M&P, PSA and Rock River

Hyundai/Kia = Bushmaster

Yugo/AMC Pacer/Matchbox Car/Turd sandwich = DPMS

I did hear good things about Spike's Tactical, Daniel Defense, Knight Arm, Wilson Combat from former military men in combat and had shot more than a few rounds with their AR15s.

As I said in my previous post, I would love to get the best parts (for the money) and build one for myself but I don't have the knowledge, tools, and time to do so.
