My guns (or at least stock pics of my guns that I can find online while at work...):

Pontifex is largely correct here; there are some finishes less durable than others such as Bluing - it's about the oldest finish out there and is tried and true, but doesn't go that deep into the metal and as such can scratch off easily. But it's still a great finish, and the finish I prefer the look of.

Honestly, get what you like. A gun WILL wear down. Period, end of story. It's metal on metal, and something will wear as a result. Finish will wear over time. If it's a blued finish, refinishing the gun can be done by any experienced gun smith.

But the bottom line is, get what you like. Treat the gun with RESPECT, and understand it is a tool.

Actually it's the Umarex, but same difference I guess. Umarex apparently has the license from HK.
What is the lower on the Umarex made from? On the GSG-5, it's polymer.

The real question is, is it more reliable than the GSG?

hell if I know - there are various reviews out there saying one way or the other. Doubt there's too many people that have gone in depth with both.

I've only put a couple hundred rounds through it so far - no hiccups yet.

Then its better than my friend's GSG 22 pistol which is picky with mags, and even on good mags can have feed issues.

How do you guys feel about matte stainless steel? Id have to wait for the polished, and to be honest I want the matte much more. However, Ive heard a few reports that the matte self polishes over time and gets smudged from anything coarser than a microfiber cloth.

Well basically all matte stainless is is steel that's been bead blasted or etc to dull the finish. So of course it can/will wear down with time and usage to become shiny.

Personally I'd have no interest in the polished stainless version. But it's your gun, get what you want.

yeah, there's lots of finishes out there. you can always get a gun re-finished if you don't like the original finish or if it wears off.

That looks like a Beretta Nano, yes?

Yes it is. It was down to Nano, Shield, or Glock 26. I chose the Nano based on my experience with its grown up great uncle also in the picture - tough as nails and 10000+ rounds.

I'll be putting it through its paces over the weekend with a range trip. Fits my hands well and should work well for belly band or IWB carry. Needed something for warmer weather since it's no longer appropriate to be wearing a jacket everywhere I go

Like the blocky camo on the top rifle, thats cool as hell. Nice stuff.

I should note that it's technically a pistol, as the lower receiver was purchased and built as such with the pistol receiver extension (does not accept stock, has never been fitted with a stock). I'll probably pay the $200 to SBR eventually, but it's fun for what it is (AR Pistol).

100% legal and NFA compliant unless you add a stock or a true vertical foregrip. BATFE says the Magpul AFG is okay. Complicated rules in order to have a < 16" barrel.

Well, I should say legal in free states. Everything in that pic would be illegal if I lived in California

To me, finish depends on the application. If its a survival type rifle, I want something that will last through abuse. Long term storage, infrequent cleaning, temperature differentials, etc.

I have weapons for survival and weapons for fun or because I like them. To me, there is no "one size fits all".

In WA, we don't yet have SBRs yet - totally illegal.

Unless the application is a show case gun, I'd say tenifer (what Glock uses) is about the best that exists. My Glock 21 has yet (well, "mine" even though I gifted it to a family member, I speak of the gun in the very present tense as I still see it at times) to receive a single blemish on the finish, despite the gun seeing use. Glocks have the most AWFUL trigger I have EVER seen and that is in of itself reason to hate Glocks in my book (even modded, it was pretty awful compared to my 1911) and the guns look like a giant lego block...they're functional durable reliable guns that I would not hesitate to bet my life on.

-----

As for pictures...
Top: M1A in a Sage stock
Below, my 1903
Below, my Garand, minus a stock (booo)
Below that are my revolvers and my 1911.

My revelation I just really had: all of my guns are based on designs that are >50 years old, pretty much. Who needs any of that plastic crap anyway?

Next gun: M1 Carbine, non-folding stock, with a top guard that has a rail on it for a red dot scope. Yay for 30 carbine as a CQB rifle.

Less text, more pics!

For all the Taurus haters. >1K rounds in, ZERO problems.

My M & P 9mm. I have around 2K through this one with ONE fail to feed, which was my fault.
