Really? Are you having trouble with .40 in general, or just that specific type?

Defense ammo in general is not hard to find around here. If I'm willing to pay up for 'the good stuff,' plenty of gun stores and big box places like Academy have it in every handgun caliber. It's just generic FMJ that's hard to find. And .40 is probably the easiest to get. 9mm is constantly sold out at the cheaper places, .45 and .380 are probably tied for second. .40 is right in the area between those super-common round that sell out based on volume, and the slightly more obscure rounds (like 9mm Mak) that sell out based on said obscurity (still lots of guns of that caliber, but much less supply and people tend to stock up because they don't see it as much).

I.e. .40 is always on the shelves, even at Walmart, even in FMJ plinking ammo.

I still can't comprehend the logic that makes people buy up all the FMJ, though. The whole panic-buying and/or stockpiling thing is not based on range use, one would think...why go through so much effort to collect rounds to immediately throw away on paper targets, especially when the ranges keep ammo for range use in stock, anyway? And the flip side...why collect slightly more unreliable, ineffective ammo for use in this imagined apocalypse that people are hoarding for?

I fucking hate the stupid masses and their self-fulfilling prophecies.

'Why do you buy ammo that you're not using every time you see it on the shelf?'

'I heard there was a supply shortage!'

'...there is a supply shortage...because there's a demand excess...because you won't stop buying ammo every time you see it on the shelf.'

Yeah, I meant readily available :-D

There are gun shows twice a month here with similar prices and always in stock ;-)

Gun shows here are mostly the resellers that camp Wal-Mart every morning then try to sell boxes and even Ziploc bags of 20-50 .22LR for $30.

You bought a Colt 1908? Or 1903? I'm assuming the former (.380?).

Who cares if it's beat-up, post pics. Old guns are neat.

I need to get another .38 revolver. Regretting that I sold my Official Police. I couldn't bring myself to dick with that gun like I do most others...the missing bluing on the left side and worn-smooth wood grip on the right were part of its charm. The guy I sold it to said he wanted to reblue it, but I think I convinced him that the combo of many obvious years of daily carry coupled with still-awesome function was too cool to mess with. God that thing shot good.

That's nuts. For bulk ammo to make sense for me, it needs to within the low 100's for 500 rounds, low 2's for 1000. For 9mm. Can't believe the boxes of 1000 generic 9mm going for 400+ I keep seeing.

For 400, I can buy piecemeal from the range (what I consider the more convenient option) and get 1250 rounds (25 boxes bought at my own pace).

The only bulk I've seen at the proper deep discount was that Black Friday thing someone linked on the last page. Under 200 for 900 rounds of 9mm, I think it was.

That sucks :-( I noticed about 1/3 of the ones I see are like that and I steer clear of those pos. The reasonable resellers beat the prices of the campers most of the time thankfully.

They take advantage of people who don't have the internet. Gunbroker.com has plenty.

This is what I actually wanted

but I had to settle for a beat up old iron model.

I have a vest pocket 1908 - the .25 version. cool little gun but kind of pointless these days. i bought it mostly for looks. hopefully they go up in price some day.

Went to the local Academy this afternoon and asked the clerk if they have any 9 mm in brass. He pulled out a few boxes of Monarch 9 mm 115gr FMJ for $13 per box of 50 rounds or $0.26/round plus sale tax. Did not know that brand was made in Serbia.

I hate that crap (Monarchy shit) the wife and I went and shot every bit of that crap we had just to get rid of it in both 9mm & 45... Glad to be rid of it... I had jams in every weapon we shot it in even the xd9 and my SA 1911 which never jams... We had 2 boxes of each and was so glad to be rid of them... Started using the old reliable Winchester white box stuff and not one jam period...

What was shot today... Damn got a lot of cleaning to do...

Were you shooting the Monarch brass? It's cheap shitty ammo in general, but I don't see why you would have feeding problems with the brass stuff. It's the coated steel crap that will stick in chambers.

I would not touch the steel case from any brand because most of the ranges around here would not allow them. Monarch brand is 4/5 star in the review. I will report later if there is any problem. I did visual check all the boxes and so far, no rust spot or deform at the neck as my previous white box of Winchester 100 rounds = http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=35507707&postcount=6039

9 mm Monarch steel case is $11 per 50 rds box or $0.22/rd plus sale tax.

@ Bart - darn. I saw at least 4 ARs with accessories. What brands are they? Must be nice to have money to buy nice toys.

phucheneh... Has nothing to do with the brass casings... Just a cheap low QC load that is inconsistent when flung at targets too... I really hate to bitch about a brass cased ammo but it is not worth the money spent... Oh as for steel hulls well that is what they should be left for "hulls" but on ships not ammo... Now back to Monarch ammo it looks great and a good price but it even fresh ammo just would not shoot worth spit today...?

Yes all AR's except for the mini 14 in 6.8 SPC which I just picked up and it shoots sweet... But the fun today was the RAAC MKD 1919 shotgun... Everyone had fun shooting it (Dad, brother in-law, wife & myself)... Far left is the 300BLK and its nice too but waiting on the "piece O pipe" for it... Next from left just cheap flatop with poly lower and laser... Middle is the sweetie an AR10 (Ruger SR762) beside it is my favorite the Bushmaster 11.5/5.5 it just hits where you put the green dot... Then there is just a bunch of "hog legs"

Just takes time and saving and before ya know it your buying a bigger safe... (got more but just what we shot today)

Won't allow steel case or won't allow steel core ammo? Big difference. If they won't allow steel case that just makes no sense and is just so they can recycle the brass and sell overpriced reloads. Steel core can damage backstops and I it's fine to not allow it but not allowing steel case is just being greedy.

No steel ammunitions of any type are allowed is what I have been told, I did not dig further for details. Plus I am not crazy about them (steel ammo) from my research except the price.

Makes a big difference where the steel is located. I've had good luck with steel cased ammo, mainly Tula. Used it for plinking when ammo went sky high. It's low powered and not overly accurate but for punching holes in paper it'll do the trick.

Ditto... It can be very rough on the ejector itself too... Just shoot a few and look close at your weapon and the casings... Almost a no brainer "steel hard & brass soft"...
Damn got up with a sore shoulder but man was it fun to get to go shoot... Not to hot not to cold a bit overcast and almost no wind, days like that should never end... Uh time for work...
