Internet prices:

500 rounds of .22 $16-20 (3 to 4 cents per round)
500 rounds of 9mm $100-120 (~20 cents per round)
500 rounds of .40 $140-160 (~30 cents per round)
500 rounds of .45 $160-180 (35+ cents per round)

Where the hell are you finding 500 rds of .22 for $16 and where can I get some?

Holy smokes, prices go up fast after you leave .22. What about .50?

Cheapest I see is $22 for a box of 20, and that doesn't even count shipping. So right now it's a good bit MORE than $1/round

Yep. Ammo is easily the largest expense in shooting if you stay in practice, even if you buy an expensive gun.

As for .50, depends on the variety.

.50 AE: $30 for 20 rounds. I'll let you do the math on that one.
.50 GI: $25 for 20 rounds.
500 S&W: $47 for 20 rounds.

Wow!! Damn. Maybe I'll have to stick to a .22 or 9mm. Does a 9mm gun make anywhere near as big a boom as a .40?

Pretty much any pistol is going to be loud.

Even a .22 out of a handgun is fairly loud. Out of a rifle barrel I can barely hear a .22 going off with ear protection on.

The .22 seemed like a bb gun compared to the .40, it freaked me out at first lol.

Is there any reason to get a compact gun if all I want to do is shoot it at the range?

If you plan on getting a concealed carry permit in the future it could be useful, but for a range toy I'd get something big and heavy. Helps mitigate the recoil, longer sight radius, overall just more fun to shoot.

Okie dokie, out of all the guns you guys listed, i liked the P226, and the CZ75B the best...then the 92FS after those. The Sig 1911 is my absolute favorite (though thats not 9mm ).

Anyone used the James Bond gun (ppk)? Is it alright?

I'd go with the CZ75 from those three.

I've never shot one but the PPK is a pretty small gun and probably not the best to start out with. .380 is also not that great of a cartridge for defensive uses and it's more expensive than 9mm.

They make 1911's in 9mm. I posted one I owned by Smith & Wesson. I also own one from Rock Island (RIA) and springfield. You can get 1911's in 22lr as well or buy a conversion slide. I have one from advantage arms.

I hope you're making your decision on more than looks and bang factor. The 1911 is a very different beast than the other metal/alloy framed guns like the sigs, berettas or cz's even in the way you should hold it with how the 1911 has the safety on the frame while the 92fs has it on the slide. Then you have the sig and their decocker too. You should learn what makes these guns different aside from just look/manufacturer before buying.

Oh, and I personally don't like guns with slide mounted safeties. There is a CHANCE that you would engage it during a power rack.

The walther is a 380. 380 is actually more expensive than 9mm even though it is a smaller/weaker round.

The 9mm is certainly softer shooting, especially with cheap bulk ammo. Your still focusing way to much on the wrong things. Get a soft shooting 22 or 9mm and learn how to properly shoot a handgun. If you start out with a 50 all your going to do is ingrain bad habits and postpone learning how to properly shoot. A 22 or 9mm will also allow you to shoot more due to cheaper ammo costs. If you want a big boom get a shotgun.

Of those get the CZ. It's cheap, reliable, and accurate as hell. Plus it's 9mm and cheap to shoot. Pretty much the perfect gun to learn with. I wouldn't touch a new Sig 226. If you decide on one of those find an older used German made model, not the new Essex built crap. Their new 1911's are fine though. If you get a 1911 get a .45, they were designed that way for a reason. Keep in mind 1911's are absolutely fantastic handguns but take time and effort to keep running. They are not the ideal gun for a first time owner.

people keep talking about time and effort to keep a 1911 running...wtf are you talking about?

I own 2 1911s, soon to be a 3rd and there is no more effort in either one than any other pistol i own.

Maybe he means the takedown? To be fair it does have a couple more things to do in field stripping than most modern guns, though not all that much to make a big deal about.

So what's the big deal with these 1911s? I think they look pretty awesome, but why are they totally different?

Lots of people swear by .45 ACP, especially those who were ever in the military. 1911s have a century-long reputation of being quite accurate & reliable and have a long reach among pistols in the hands of a good shooter.

I just picked up a Glock 19, gen 3. Was looking hard at sub compacts, but settled on the 19 compact instead. It fits well in my hand, was $525 plus tax, and since it is the most commonly sold consumer handgun in the US, there are tons of holsters, accessories, locks, you name it, for this gun. It fits well in my hand, is easy to use, and overall just felt nice. It has a 15 round magazine, comes with two magazines and a carrying case, and was overall a nice package.

This week Dick's Sporting Goods has 525 round boxes of Blazer CCI 22LR for $18.98

Find a 10% off your next purchase coupon, and that's down to about $16 for 500.

Review time with pictures! Just because. :awe:

So you guys don't suggest getting the 1911 9mm then? I'm trying to figure out where I could go to test these guns (doubt guns have a return policy, lol), but no where here comes to mind. The gun show is coming in a couple weeks though.

Most local ranges will let you rent guns by the hour for like $20. The horse has already been beaten to death in this thread, but at a minimum you should be putting your hands on prospective purchases to see how they "feel" to you. Just looking online at what is cool is not going to work. Go to a gun store. From there, go to a range, see if they rent the guns you are interested in.

This thread could be 1,000 pages long and you're not going to get a consistent answer as to which gun you should buy - with the caveat that we're all going to say "don't buy a .50"

Same boom, more recoil, more cost per round.

Stay with a 9 as your first pistol. You'll thank me later.

If you get a 1911 get one in .45 and get a Colt.

Another option is the Browning High Power (same designer as the 1911) in 9mm:

Might be a bit past your budget though.

I'd get the CZ75.
