I have a stupid question about the AK-47... Is there a particular brand that's more authentic than the other? Or are these now banned-from-import Saiga AK47s the only "real" ones?

You can't get any more authentic than the saiga or arsenal sgl models. These use the same basic materials and components in the same original factory and are about as high of quality you will find for a stamped receiver ak. You won't find a better factory made barrel. The saiga's are bare bones dressed down to appear non threatening so they can be imported. The sgl's are saigas brought back to normal configuration by arsenal in nevada; not to be confused with slr models imported from bulgaria.

So basically, all the good AK47s won't be able to be imported anymore?

There are plenty of other ak's that can get the job done. They just won't have that russian soul to them. I think Molot (who makes a darn nice ak variant themselves) are effected as well.

Putin invades a sovereign nation, this is our government's response. It is what it is I guess. There still thousands upon thousands of russian ak's on the market. Go look.

The stuff running loose in the middle east

Sorry not really meant to be political, but that is probably truly where the real ones are atm.

The "real ones" are made on the same lines in the same factory for the russian military with the exact same receivers and barrels. They just have the select fire feature.

Hope that clears up any confusion.

Finding a "real" AK is like finding a "real" M-16. You're going to have to look hard and have a 5 figure budget because the only legal ones are those registered before '86.

My AK was built from a Romanian parts kit on a Nodak Spud receiver. I'm not much of an expert on AKs, but it looks good and shoots decently, so I'm not complaining.

I'll just never go to the trouble of bothering to be honest.

There are other things I'd spend the money on before that I 'd imagine for the price I guess.

My point was more or less a lot of em are just out there freely running amok, if I was spending money for something it wouldn't be an AK I guess.

I really wouldn't want a "real" M-16 even, though I used to drive one on loan.

I'll bow out of that discussion now.

Latest member in the family: AR15 all black and all Magpul edition (stock, grip, trigger guard, magazine, sights (foldable front and rear)), CHF barrel by FN, free float rail, micro red dot, Nickel Boron BCG....and so on). Total cost so far is about $1K. More (sling, front grip, light, etc.) to come.

There are enough great AKs coming out of Serbia and Bulgaria to cover your Kalash needs. Saigas were good rifles, but they weren't magical.

I cut my teeth shooting a Chinese AK...it was probably closer in size to an RPK though. Less notorious in accuracy. Chinese imports have been off the table for way longer and those are still in circulation as well.

The only thing that sucks about the import ban is no access to more modern AKs...I wouldn't have minded an AK-12 import. But you don't even need a "real" AK in terms of being built in the Eastern world...Century makes their own AK model line that's 100% domestic and has good reviews overall from what I've seen.

Curious if we'll see ALL AKs go up in price because of this? You know, just toprice gouge the uninformed.

Saiga prices went up a day or two after the news. Rest of Ak prices havent that ive seen.

I never saw the appeal of a Saiga personally. The Shotgun was cool and might have picked up on someday...but the rifles...meh. Buy a rifle just to convert it. Meh i'll go buy a nice Arsenal or something instead. (which i plan to do in the not to distant future). But that is just my opinion and im only buying an AK to have an AK. It wont be shot very often.

^^That's pretty much how I see it. Saiga 12s are nice but never got the infatuation some people have with the brand.

AKs are just made to work. My only experience with malfunctions was an owner covered his in large amounts of petroleum jelly and never bothered to clean it before shooting again. At higher heat the stuff becomes like candlewax and ended up getting into the bolt carrier making it misfire every time.

The Century Centurion 39 Tactical is likely the first I'll get...milled American AK with a chrome-lined barrel and railed grip, sells for ~$650 right now. I like the functional stuff now, the wooden AKs will come later.

I put a few goodies on the new 930 SPX.

First is a GG&G sling and rail adapter, and a Streamlight TLR1 HL on it -

Next I put a GG&G all aluminum side saddle 6 shot shellholder on the side -

And then I added a spare Vickers padded sling I had laying around (found that color on ebay for about $20 per sling, so I bought 3 of them. Some may still be going for cheap on ebay if you dont mind camo versions).

I am waiting on a mash hook to arrive so I can hook the front end of that sling to the new sling adapter properly, right now it is just using an uncle mikes sling swivel for now.

Now I just need time to go out and shoot it.

Also, what's the bet that Obama will spin this as "I have just banned the importation of all AK-47s to the United States!" to his gun control allies? They're just about ignorant enough to believe it.

Grabbed 2x Federal 22lr HollowPt 550 Rnd bulk packs from wallyworld for $42. Probably crap but its the only 22lr I've seen in forever so I got it while I could. Aside from a few hunting rounds and some buckshot they are still wiped out.

ugh....$42 a box...i used to buy that for less than $10 a box a few years ago....so sad...

I never had any issues with it. always went bang. accuracy isn't the best though.

my local walmart is always sold out of the popular stuff also.

No, it was $19/Box. $42 and some change out the door for both.

wow, really? I assumed it was $42 a box as thats what most other places are charging (if not higher).

Yeah I was shocked that A) they even had some and B) that it was under $0.04 a round. They have a 1 box per person limit but I happened to be with my mother so the guy said I could have two and just rang it up as one order.

So I'm going to have to retract my statements about the GP handguns being the best I've ever shot.

Don't get me wrong...I still think they're great. But I went to the range with a buddy, and had him bring his Jericho with him, as it has always been a favorite for both of us.

While the GP's have some great features for competition shooting...giant magwell, doublestack mags that are very thin at the top, uber drop-free ejects, auto-forwarding...as far as quickly and accurately placing shots, the Jericho still wins. Better-than-CZ trigger, natural pointing, heavy as shit, and just unbelievably accurate. We both fired five rounds at 25 yards, and managed to both get all five of them in the inner circle of an IPDA target. May not seem that impressive, but if you asked me to guess if I could hit 5/5 on an 8" circle at 75 feet with a pistol with average combat sights...I would say no. But with that gun, apprently...yup.

I think he wants to sell it to make room for more HK's. Unsure what to offer him that's fair to both of us...it's a newer import with 'Desert Eagle' stampings and a slide safety. 450, maybe?
