Jesus you're dense.

Even if he had a giant target floating in the sky that said 'aim here'...that steel plate at 1000 yards is practically invisible. Which means his point of aim would be equally invisible. The absolutely tiniest flinch...the muzzle of the gun moving a millimeter or less...would cause him to miss.

I would wonder if you've ever even fired a handgun.

Maybe your 80's hair metal jeans cause your lower hald to act as a competition-grade bipod.

Gotta agree. Last time I took my SIG out I tried hitting the 100yd line for kicks. Did much better than I expected hitting a target of similar size (even my first three rounds were on target), but it was very easy for the shot to go wide. My front sight was bigger than the paper. At 10x the distance luck becomes a bigger factor than skill shooting from a handgun (though both are required). You're talking about bullet drop measured in feet and even a slow crosswind could easily affect where it goes. Hitting the balloon on the second shot is freakin' insane.

Nice collection...are you sure that's a S&W 640, or has it been refinished? The only reason I ask is because I have one and thought they were all satin stainless and .357 / .38

Love that Marlin.

It is a 640. They were chambered in .38spl until ~1995 when S&W introduced the .357magnum J-frame.

I don't believe that it was re-finished. The matte stainless was never a cataloged item, but there's a few out there and the internet speculation is that they were available for NYPD officers to buy as backup guns. I've been meaning to request a "birth certificate" letter from S&W for it.

Yeah, it would be hard enough to get the windage hold correct for a target so far away, dealing with a bullet that has gone transonic after only about 50 meters, having no real place to hold for elevation since the entire gun blocks the view of the tiny target, I'd take the balloon popping by way of 9mm fragment and call it a day!

Anybody into holster-making? I just started and figured I might share some of what I've learned. I tend to kind of ignore black and white 'this is how you do it' tutorials and have kinda just been learning on my own.

First thing to know: If you just have one gun and want one carry holster...just buy it. Especially if it's a popular gun that has lots of options. You can still make one as a project if you really want, but you're not gonna save money, and it takes a few tries before you really get a feel for it (even if you go right off a good tutorial- like most things that have some trial/error and personal preference).

I spent about $140 at a local leather supplier. Could probably get closer to $100 if you buy online, but they were really helpful at pointing me at the right stuff. They even had kydex. I got one 12x12 sheet of .060" kydex, one 24x12 sheet of .090", a decent chunk of nice, thick leather, a few different belt clips, and more Chicago screws (the little two piece 'rivet screws') than I'll ever need. The big bag of screws was like 40 bucks, the beefy kydex was like 30 and the leather was 30.

I've made two hybrid IWB holsters and still have enough leather and kydex for maybe five more. Would need more belt clips.

Needed tools: $15 heat gun from Harbor Freight. And the kitchen oven can also be handy...about 30 seconds, tops, on a cookie sheet and the thin kydex (haven't worked with the thick stuff yet) starts to act like a piece of denim. Drape it over your gun (we've been covering them with aluminum foil) and press the shape in. I'm gonna make a 'press' (a.k.a. a board with some thick foam rubber on it), but so far everything has been by hand. Also I improvised a press with a seat off an old dirtbike. :ninja:

But the heat gun can do all you need. And even with the oven/press method, you will need the heat gun for tweaking the shape. Also- dremel with a cutoff wheel, or something similar that can cut and sand the kydex. Sharp scissors for leather.

...that's it. Easy stuff. Will post some results in a bit...trying my first all-leather holster at the moment...

Oh wow. I finished tweaking my IWB holster, and this thing is epic. I can conceal a fullsize (maybe 'semi-compact') doublestack 9mm beneath a t-shirt.

If you're gonna wear kydex IWB, you have GOT to mold it to your body. When this was flat, it was awful. Now, it's glorious. Comfortable, doesn't require a super-tight belt, can sit down with it, excellent firearm retention, and the holster will NOT pull up with the gun. Yet it's still easy to take off.

Looks sweet, like taking the best elements of the White Hat and Crossbreed holsters. Way more effective than trying to find specialized holsters for your more obscure toys.

I am fairly new to owning guns, and just got my 3rd handgun (and first revolver) a couple of months ago. Being a gun owner on a budget, I purchased a EAA Windicator .357 when they were going for about $260 on slickguns recently.

I have taken it to the range a couple of times now, but I found that while the grips were ok, the ribs in the grips tended to bite the hand when shooting .357 rounds. I think EAA advertises them as rubber grips, but they are made of a hard rubber that have no give or cushion.

Soon after my first range trip with the Windicator, I began searching for aftermarket grips. I really did not have any luck, for as far as I could tell no one made grips for this particular gun. I even called Hogue, and they told me that they did not have any grips for it. The only clue I could find was a post on one forum where a gentleman said he had had luck with the rubber grips from a Taurus Tracker. So, I went to my LGS and ordered a Hogue monogrip for a Tracker.

It is not a perfect fit. The screw hole on the bottom of the Hogue is near one edge, while the bottom hole on the stock grips are nearer the center. I had to use a dremel to create another screw hole in the bottom of the Hogue. I had to get a longer screw at a hardware store than the one that came with the new grips. Also, part of the Hogue overhung the sides of the trigger guard, so a couple of swipes with a utility knife (following the inside contours of the guard) fixed that. The resulting modifications will not win any beauty contest, but for what I paid for the gun I am pretty happy with how it turned out. The Hogue grips feel solidly planted on the gun, and it gives it a much nicer feel in the hand. I am looking forward to taking it to the range again to try it out.

My apologies for the crappy cell phone pics. I just wanted to point out one grip option for those of you who may have a Windicator and were less than content with the stock grips.

Looks pretty nice to me, one of my personal favorites is my old .357 Colt.

It's similar at any rate.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

It may look similar, but I'm willing to bet there is a world of difference in the quality of workmanship between your Colt and my EAA. I've had a chance to handle and shoot my BIL's older Python, and it was pretty nice. The Windicator is about what you would expect from a $250-300 revolver. It will get the job done, but it's definitely not a highly-refined piece of machinery.

+1 for making it better.

Nice work.

I only shot .357 on my first trip to the range. The second trip was all .38 and .38+p. To me, it is very mild when shooting .38s, and it isn't all that bad shooting .357. It is just that the stock grips made shooting .357 a little uncomfortable after a full box of rounds. I don't know yet if the Hogue grips will make it more enjoyable to shoot .357 or not. The Hogues just feel beefier (more substantial) in my hands, and that makes me feel as if I have a better purchase on the gun.

EDIT - I don't know if I am clearly conveying my thoughts on this or not, since I am still fairly new to owning and shooting guns.

I have two handguns, a Glock 20 10mm and a Springfield Armory XD Tactical 357sig. The Glock is a bit much and I wouldn't want to be putting several hundred rounds through that sucker at a time, but the 357sig is no problem at all and is about 10-20% faster MV than a 9mm firing the same bullets. I also much prefer the trigger on the XD -- will be putting a Leupold Deltapoint on it soon.

How did you get the kydex to mold to the body? Heat gun while wearing it? If so, what temperature setting on the heat gun?

I never use my white hat holster because it is so stiff, both horsehide and kydex, that the holster itself makes my jeans stick out in a very unnatural way regardless of how tight my gun belt is

I used to be in love with the Crossbreed style holsters until I tried a good leather holster. There's just no comparison. Yeah, the leather costs about double what a Crossbreed does (probably 5x what a homemade one costs) but it's worth every penny.

Nor did he include the requisite toes or feet in socks in the shot.

Also, ordered a G19 slide with an RMR, so I can be disappointed by pistol rds at this stage in its lifecycle.

Which rmr did you settle on? Are you going to absolute or 1/3 cowitness the irons?
