I own an ar15, a .30 carbine, and used to own an sks. Compare how?

They're all semi auto rifles. Only the carbine and ar have detachable mags unless you modified your sks. I felt that all 3 rifles were fairly soft recoil. Carbine and sks are bigger calibers.
Not sure about the mmr but mist ar style rifles are highly configurable vs the other 2. The mmr would be plastic and metal vs wood and metal.

Recoil mostly. The SKS and carbine were the only semi-auto I have fired. Mostly I am a 22lr guy. Other than the 22 a 308 and 338 Win. Mag. is what I have shot the most.

Doubtful if I will be doing any mods. Mostly will be a range/closet queen.

Well hell. I was planning on buying an AR15 in August/Sept, but now I'm screwed. If I want to get one before they all disappear or cost $12,000 I'm going to have to put off bills. I even found one I really liked for about $800 locally.

If you used Legos as a kid (or an adult), just buy a lower now, pick up the rest on sale, and assemble it yourself.

Is there a "AR for Dummies" book? I may not have a lot of interest in shooting right now. I can always make a little time for a new project/learning experience.

I thought about going that way, but honestly, I'd really like a full-assembled rifle. I'm no gunsmith.

Ask and you shall receive.

https://www.ar15.com/content/guides/assembly/lower/

http://www.thenewrifleman.com/how-to-build-a-lower-receiver/

http://quarterbore.com/library/pdf_files/assemblealower.pdf

With video = https://www.midwayusa.com/general.mvc/index/how-to-build-ar-15-rifle (steps by steps how to build the lower and upper, a complete rifle)

Full disclosure. I personally haven't done one by myself. Just don't have the time and goodness, I do not need more tools in the house. Same reason that I do not do reloading.

So I just order completed uppers and lowers, put the bcgs and chs in, pull the 2 pins and I am very much done.

In other news, my orders (of ammo/supplies/and completed uppers) from PSA just came in yesterday. Now I am waiting from the local FFL for the completed lowers.

Have done 2 so far, biggest tip is to use painter's tape to protect the finish while learning, also, most of the special wrenches you see are cheap crap, I got some Brownelles branded stuff that's awesome..

^Don't cheap out on tools. You might spend up to a few Benjamins on tools alone but a better quality tool saves money in the long run because they last a lifetime. Having a proper set of pin punches for the gas block and for the various roll pins is a must. Small brass hammer a must as well. A quality AR barrel nut wrench, stock wrench, flash hider removal tool, or some combo tools that do all three are also great to have around.

I use electrical tape rather than painter's tape but the same effect - less/no scratches or damage from installing that bolt catch assembly

Thanks for the links!

I will be looking into building my own. I have all the listed tools. Except for the Pivot Pin Installation Tool and Telescoping Stock Wrench. What are good ones?

Does anyone recommend the "Anderson Manufacturing AR-15 Stripped Lower Receiver" linked to above for a beginner?

Anyone who can't "assemble" an AR should stay out of the gun game all together.

I personally don't have one (hate ARs, go figure) but it's as straightforward as it gets to building something as long as you don't go the 80% route.

If you can put together a computer from components you can build an AR

Yes, it's not gun smithing, it more assembly.

Yeah having the correct tools definitely makes the process easier. But as someone else said, if you can put a computer together you can put an AR-15 together. It's not much more difficult than assembling a Lego set.

I'm pretty sure my AR pistol that I put together has an Anderson Manuf. lower; no problems with it.

If you're building an AR, get a good torque wrench to get the barrel nut on right. A punch set isn't a bad idea either.

Yeah, pretty much all of the above of course, they are snap together for the most part.

With the spring and buffer they have in the butt stock, they barely kick at all compared to most rifles.

Well could you guys recommend some tools to get?

if you can find one I'd recommend the DPMS Panther's claw for the upper. It over comes the issues with some styles of uppers like the Vltor. The way those are designed they dont' fit nicely in the clamp versions of the upper tools. It also works really well with normal style uppers as well. A bit pricier and harder to find than the normal clamp style, but worth it. More so if you find yourself building out more and more.
