Thanks for your input everyone. The 10/22 seems to be highly recommended. There are so many different models, parts and ammo this is more complicated than picking out parts and building a PC. It's even worse when I don't even know where and how to purchase everything. There are only a few smaller sporting good shops and pawn shops here and I can't travel to larger towns since they have more Covid-19 cases.

What barrel is best for being in the weather full time? Is it better and/or cheaper to purchase a pre-built modded gun or mod it myself? I have no idea what attachments I would need or want. Since I'm near sighted a scope is necessary and a couple larger mags would be handy. Are attachments to reduce recoil even necessary for a .22LR?

Also, are there any other guns with abundant, affordable and easily packable ammo I should be considering?

I would start here:

https://www.wikiarms.com/guns?q=ruger+10/22

Find someone who will handle the transfer for a reasonable fee and you are good to go.

I know these days it is really important to be tacticool and hang as much stuff off your weapon as possible, I would recommend the opposite. Buy a stock gun and run as much ammo through it as you can. Think Steph Curry shooting baskets.

Develop some proficiency and become really comfortable shooting it. Mine has a synthetic stock. I did replace the sights with tangent sights.

You may want a 22LR pistol. Lots to choose from.

Edit: You are going to want a sling also. If it is a handgun, make that a holster.

Finally got the Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creed. Not sure why I've been waiting for it. I also won a Saint in a raffle which I'll probably sell as I've too many ARs..

This Youtube was embedded in your first link, for those who might just want a minute and a half of Clint Smith's take on terminal ballistics. (NSFW):

Not sure on the barrel, they might make a stainless version which I'd think would be the best?

I wouldn't go too crazy on the modding stuff. From the sounds of it, I'd get a 3-9 Weaver scope (I wouldn't go spending a ton on this; I'd bet you'd be served by an inexpensive scope) and some of their 30 round mags. Maybe a sling too.

Recoil don't worry about; 22s are really soft shooting.

I'd personally opt for a version with a threaded barrel cause I'd wanna put a suppressor on it but if you don't then no need.

Thanks for your reply. I did get to go out and look around at 3 stores the other day. One was promising but after standing at the counter for 30 minutes the guy didn't so much as make eye contact so I left. I also looked into ar-15 videos to learn more and paying $10 to shoot a 30 round mag would be expensive considering it would take a ton of them before got comfortable shooting the gun. It's still temping considering the gun doesn't cost much more than a S&W M&P 15-22.

Do any of you have trouble loading and unloading a mag into your 10/22s? Do they work normally and are they reliable? I see people having troubles loading the mags and having jamming issues as well as trouble pulling the mag out in videos and the reviews of the bx-25 mag say the same thing. What is the deal with a satin black barrel finish on this model? Ideally I'm looking for something that holds up in weather. Are there other reliable semi-auto mag fed 22LRs I should be considering? I like the S&W M&P 15-22 but they are mostly polymer and pricey right now.

How does ordering a gun online work? I know it has to be transferred to an FFL dealer but what about filling out the paperwork to get a firearm? What if I get turned down for some reason? I've only bought 1 pistol twenty years ago in the same state if that matters.

I have three 10rd mags. Never had a problem. Probably not as quick and easy reload as an AR.

You can find an FFL dealer near you here:

https://www.gunbroker.com/ffl/index

Choose one and maybe touch base with them ahead of time.

I just price shop, paying attention to tax and shipping. Provide the FFL info and hopefully get a tracking number.

I believe it is an easier process if you have a CHL. Two minutes to complete a form and sign. Pay your transfer fee and you are on your way. Maybe buy some ammo from the guy.

Good luck.

Those S&W ARs are supposed to be quite decent (the centerfire 5.56mm version and the 22LR version). I think either the S&W or the Ruger would serve you well; which one probably mostly just comes down to looks and personal preference, IMO.

There's other reliable 22s out there besides the S&W and Ruger but I don't really have experience with them so I can't really say. I have a Savage that's great but it's bolt action. CZ makes great stuff but I'm not sure if they make a semi auto (probably).

I have not heard of people having any issues with quality, Ruger mags (BX-25 or the smaller rotary 10 rounders). Some aftermarket ones might be OK but since mags are such an integral part of a firearm, I'd rather spend more to have dependable ones. If you look up videos on YouTube by hickok45/nutnfancy/IraqVeteran8888 I think they each have vids on the 10/22 and might describe other reliable mags.

For buying guns online, yeah you have to ship it to a FFL dealer. Most websites will allow you to select the dealer. I usually just pick a dealer close to me and they'll email me when it's ready to pick up. Then whether it's an individual with an FFL, or a regular gun store, you just go in to the store (or the person's house; some work out of their house if they're an individual) and fill out the 4473 form. They do background check (which I wouldn't worry about if you're a normal citizen with no issues to owning guns) and you're out the door.

*I should caveat that process with the fact I'm in Michigan. Other states might have more laws (waiting period) but that's the basic process.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. The reviews also seem to point to the 10 rd mags working better than the 25 rd.

I did call a FFL dealer yesterday and he wants $25 for a transfer even though the website you linked to said $15. I wonder what their actually costs are? Is the fee sometimes reduced or waived if I buy something from him like ear protection, ammo, mags, etc.?

I don't have a CHL Good to hear the background check is a quick process though.

It's funny you mention those youtubers. I've been watching a bunch of their videos this past week. Also, hickok45 was the one I saw having trouble loading and unloading the 10/22 mags. Maybe it's an issue with the operator as people either love or hate the bx25.

Thanks for the info on FFL and background checks. In the past I thought you could get a rifle quicker than a pistol but that was a long time ago. Two weeks ago my sister was able to sit in her car while the guy did a background check and shortly after came back out with a pistol and she was on her way.

I'm honestly torn on what I want to do. I'm going back and forth on getting a 22 LR rifle or pistol or a 9mm pistol or an AR-15. Ideally I would get an AR-15 with a 22 LR conversion kit and a 9mm pistol. Do the 22LR conversion kits in an AR-15 shoot accurately? I'm also wondering if prices will settle in a bit before the election before they irrationally ramp up again.

On another forum someone mentioned combining these two items and said it's possible to build a lower without fancy gun tools. What are your thoughts and are there better options for the price?

I believe that $15 is on the low end for a transfer fee. The local gun shop guy would prefer to sell me the gun, but it's hard for him to compete with the best online price, plus he has to collect sales tax. I feel a bit guilty because I know and like the guy.

I tend to buy ammo from him because he has it and the shipping usually is more than the tax.

I get what you mean about a store owner wanting to sell his own guns. My problem is limited income and local small town product selection. I might know another guy that will do a transfer for $15. The problem with him though is getting him in to the store so I can pick up the gun or lower lol.

Yeah, sometimes you got to separate friends from business. It's nothing personal. I had one friend hit me up about signing up with some electricity provider that he would get some commission on. The rate he was quoting wasn't even close to the best I could find. Yeah... no. Then there was the nice couple early in my marriage that befriended us. They invited us over for dinner... and an AMWAY sales pitch. They really didn't know me very well. Yeah... no. But it works both ways. I've had "friends" that tried to use our friendship to get free computer work. If I offer it's one thing. Just don't be friendly with me and try to get over on me. Yeah... no.

Maybe you posted it before, but what uses are you intending for the rifle/pistol you want to get?

As for building an AR, it's not very hard but there's a few tools you'll want to have, like a punch set, a mallet, snap-ring pliers (if you're not doing a free float handguard), wrench for barrel nut and muzzle device, some grease for putting barrel into upper. I'd actually not recommend building one as your first one but like I said, it's not that hard, and if you do the research and take your time, and have the right tools, then you can do it. I'd just save that for a future rifle build and go factory for the first one.

My first revolver. It's a S&W 686 Performance Center with a 2.5" barrel. It is a 7-shot revolver. It has an L+ frame. Beautiful gun and the trigger is great. The ranges just opened here in Texas today. Got an offer to go to a private range yesterday when I went to pick up the firearm from my FFL. Just a month ago I was contemplating going out to the country just to get some practice in.

Apparently Saturday my P229 is *finally* returning, slide cut for a red dot sight.

I think I sent it out in early December, and at that time I think the estimated time was 12 weeks. The place said it's a one man operation so things take time.

I hated to bug him but I finally emailed earlier this month and like a week later got a reply asking which red dot I was going to mount and what finishing color I wanted (both things I specified before).

Then like a week after my reply I get an email saying my order was being shipped. Dude probably forgot about the damn thing!

Can't say I'd recommend that place. I just hope it came out good.

I was a little worried about the paint, since I had selected "3 Color Camo/Multicam" and then he asked me what color I wanted anyway, during which time I realized Multicam is like 6 colors.

But the paint (cerakote I believe) came out fantastic and everything was fine. Came out frickin perfect. Now I just wanna get a threaded barrel for it.

I took the plunge and efiled my Form 1 today. So far, man, should have just kept it a pistol. Sent of the ADM lower for engraving, time to just sit and wait, and spend more money on parts to build the new lower. Keeping the current lower in the picture in pistol configuration.

Probably my favorite gun in my collection and one I will never shoot. It is a collector grade firearm, master engraved by Colt, it came out of their custom shop a few years ago. Pictures don't really do it justice.
