Weren't you going to AZ? I feel like a stalker lol, but could swear I read that in one of your threads. That would've been sweet firearms wise.

I did a few months ago yeah but I just reenlisted and got stationed at fort Lewis.

I'm looking to buy my first two guns. I've read about a dozen pages in this thread, but not the entire thread.

I'm thinking about getting a .40 and either a .22 or a 9mm. I have fired a .40 and a .22 but not a 9mm because there was no ammo available when I went to the range. The .22 jammed repeatedly. The guy I was with thought it was due to cheap ammo, but that concerns me. Do all .22 guns have a tendency to jam frequently?

I'm looking for suggestions on quality guns. I don't plan to buy many guns over the years (though that could change), so I'd like to get some high quality, dependable guns. I don't care about looks/fancy, just reliability.

Any recommendations on a .40 and a .22 or 9mm? Also, what is the most reliable ammo?

Thanks!

Jamming issues are usually gun-specific, but more so operator error.

If you go the 9mm route, do a little research on the Ruger P95 or the Springfield XD9.

If you're willing to spend money, get a Browning Hi Power and have it worked on by Heine, Novak, Garthwaithe or similar. Costs as much as a rifle, but you get a top of the line 9mm. That is, if a all metal 9mm does it for you. Else, Glock, M&P....

Do you guys carry with one in the barrel? I dont have a license so i dont carry, but ive been thinking about it and it kind of freaks me out lol.

Yes. It doesn't make any sense *not* to really.

The less barriers between: pulling the gun - acquiring target - and shooting the gun, the better.

This is why guns with manual safeties are usually not recommended for carry.

I carry with one in, but I only carry guns with a manual safety...never liked my glock much for it's trigger safety.

A nice in between is a P7.

Ehhh plenty of guns with manual safeties are recommended and used by man for carry. 1911's especially.

I carry my xds with one in the chamber. My 226 i dont. Personal preference (i also dont carry my 226 hardly ever anymore)

carry however you have practiced and are comfortable. you can ask and read about the different methods but thing is none will work as well as the one you have practiced with and are comfortable with

I started to carry unchambered to get used to the feel of carrying a three-pound brick and avoiding any chance of discharge--maybe a useless concern since my holsters protect the trigger, but I'd rather not mess around with such a thing. I plan to carry chambered in the immediate future.

Alternative question: who carries +1?

I carry +1. I usually carry an M&P Shield, with the 8rd magazine, so I always top the mag off as well.

I also carry a spare magazine. I had a custom made kydex holster by a member of a gun forum I frequent, with a matching magazine holster for the shield as well. Works well for me, and conceals great.

I didn't for the first few weeks just to get used to it and for the fact that it felt a bit weird with one in the chamber but I have since switched to carrying with one on the chamber. Less to fool around with or go wrong in the case I need it quick, and I figured it would be basically like carrying a revolver anyway.

I carry +1 in my Glock 19, but don't carry an extra mag.

Questions: if you have a decent setup, it should be very hard for someone to notice you're carrying, right? I'd need to be pretty inconspicuous about it since a lot of my family hate firearms. That being said, how much does a good holster cost?

At first you'll be really paranoid about everyone looking for a gun on you...then you'll realize that most of those people go through their lives without ever looking at the people around them, much less their bulging strong side.

It becomes second nature.

Selling the P22 tomorrow A little sad to see it go, but it was originally for my wife and she's "off the wagon" for awhile. Should help me start towards my next purchase though.

Depends on your body size. I am very slim (30" waist size pants) so most holsters cause my clothes to stick out or bulge in an unnatural way. This is with an XDs45 in a remora, white hat, and nate^2 at any position from 2 to 5 o'clock :/

I just got an old faithful holster. It ran me $35 bucks but that was because I had to assemble it myself, which isn't a big deal. I got it mainly for the price, but because they offer a 30 day money back gaurentee, no questions asked. Not sure if that's really true, but the website says so. Other choices might be comp-tac or a cross breed.

Also you will want a gun belt. I am a 34-36 waist and I ordered a 42'' one. Carrying either an M&P9 or a Bersa Thunder 380.

A good decent holster IMO usually is going to cost anywhere from $60-$100ish, maybe slightly more. I wont pay any more than that for one though.

Holsters for my shield are a little scarce, ones that I like anyway, but someone I know from a gun board made this one for me. It is tan kydex, and instead of belt loops he put in the IWB style belt clips, just faced them backwards. I cannot stand inside waist band holsters, so this one is OWB, but the having the clips instead of loops allows me to take it off without pulling my whole belt off easily. I think he normally sells the holster and mag combo for about $60 shipped.

Makes for a nice concealable holster that is very low profile. I know he makes them for his bigger guns to carry too, even one FN45 tactical with surefire x200 and dr. optic mounted.

The CZ lineup is also great if you want an all metal 9mm (75B, 85, SP-01, P-01) and they won't cost you as much as a Hi Power plus a bunch of extra work.

I've got to mention the Sig p226 and p229 as well if you can find a good deal on them or a certified pre owned one. I've shot the p226 and really liked the feel of it and while I haven't had time to take my p229 to the range yet the ergonomics, size and weight are all absolutely perfect.

Questions: if you have a decent setup, it should be very hard for someone to notice you're carrying, right? I'd need to be pretty inconspicuous about it since a lot of my family hate firearms. That being said, how much does a good holster cost?

I'm an average sized guy and unless I was wearing a coat or possibly a suit I don't think there is any way I could completely conceal my compact P229. If I was going to carry on a regular basis i'd go ahead and invest in a pocket sized subcompact just so I could be certain I could conceal it without being the guy who wears a winter coat around inside.

I feel like I'm suddenly swimming in .308 that I am not going to shoot in the near future.

I've got 500 rounds of Lake City 7.62 x 51 149 gr that I'm sure I could easily sell for anywhere between $1.50 - $1.75/round, which would net me about $400 profit. The idea of lessening my ammo supply makes me queasy though. What would ATOT do?

The problem is, we don't know if ammo prices will ever go back down. You sell that ammo off for a profit, and if you ever need to get more of it, you might end up paying more. Now if you don't ever plan to shoot .308 anymore then go for it.

Stores are still raising prices on ammo almost daily. Academy was selling their boxes of Monarch .308 170gr soft point FMJs for $13.99 Monday, then $14.99 Tuesday, and then $15.99 yesterday. Same stuff, just upped a dollar each day. Luckily I bought a few boxes at the $13.99 price so I have some. Same thing for all their ammo, even 30-30. Monarch 30-30 I bought on Monday for $12.99 went to $13.99 the very next day. This stuff Was $9.99 last week. Ugh.

Independence brand (Israeli) made 5.56 NATO rounds are now going for $9.99 a box. Was $8.99 two weeks ago. And was $6.99 at the beginning of January. I don't see prices going down any time soon.
