Your right, don't buy reloads from Joe Plumber are a gun show. Best case is they work and you saved a few bucks. Worst case scenario he double charged a round and you blow your $1k+ rifle and suffer some have wounds. Yes, a 5.56 rifle can handle higher pressure but the big risk with reloads is they put power in twice and that's going to go boom. Search Glock kaboom or AR kaboom and look at the results. There are several companies(Georgia Arms among others) that produce reliable reloads if you must buy them. Personally I wouldn't shoot them.

I would not shoot unknown reloads either. Commercial reloads from manufacturers are generally okay.

Risk of double charge depends on the powder used. In my case I used WC-844 and WC-846 with .224 bullets and LC brass, which makes it impossible to double charge due to the powder volume. I'm a big fan of using powder which can't be double charged...

Holy sh!t, that is a custom 1911, and a very nice looking one at that! I thought he was going to pull out some crappy looking gun that barely functioned.

Hardly custom, the finish is very rough, although the shitty video quality somewhat compensates for it. There's no way to see how tight the fit is either. I'd also like to see accuracy and reliability tests.

It's impressive given how primitive the resources and manufacturing processes must be.

I say "custom" in a joking way as they are obviously hand made, and not mass produced. "Custom" doesn't necessarily mean they are cranking out Wilson Combat quality 1911's.

I watched the show that segment comes from. Vice is the series (wasnt impressed with it) but had a bit more on the guys in Danoa. That slab of metal he was laying out parts on was scrap from an old ship. So pretty impressive they can turn that into a revolver and the such. I thought the guns they did make looked decent overall for the price (100 bucks US)

Ive actually wanted to do an 80% AR lower or a 80% 1911. Someday ill do one.

I endured the 10 hour course on Saturday. Now I have to do finger printing soon and then a 6 week wait or so for the license. Class was actually really good considering. Barely even noticed that it took that long. The instructors I had were actually really good at teaching as well as entertaining enough that the 10 hour course actually didn't seem all that long.

On top of that, basically they had the cheapest price around. Everyone else is like $100 to $160 for the class. I checked out over a dozen places and the second cheapest was $95 for a veteran. Speaking of which, most only took about $5 or so off their regular rate for retired military or vets. $5 off the normal rate of $125 isn't really all that much. Then most still charge you for range fees, and even charge you rent if you need to borrow a gun to qualify with. Gun rental was typically around $50 from most places I looked at. Then they were charging about $40 for a box of 9mm. So a person that was looking to go to another class could end up paying almost $250 for their class. Then still have to pay $10 for finger printing and $140 for their license from the state. But they get free donuts!

This place was $70 for normal rate, and $60 for vets/retired military. Guns were free to be used if one didn't have one. No charge to use one of the instructors guns. They did charge $40 if you had to buy ammo though. Although I will admit they didn't have free donuts with their course. Personally I think I'd rather save $100 than have "free" donuts with my instruction.

If anyone in or around SA, TX is wondering where I went then send me a PM. I highly recommend the place I went for my class.

On the subject of Ammo.

Military Surplus (7.62x39) out of China - I'm curious as guys are talking about reloads and the risks associated, if anyone has the same concerns when buying surplus ammo out of china or russia.

I recently aquired a SKS and I'm curious what peoples thoughts are. (pictures to follow)

Thanks!

Factory ammo, even Russian surplus, is safer than reloads. Its made the same way as American factory just uses different components. Its all automated vs the reloads talked about as being risky you have no idea how they are made.

Grats on the SKS by the way. Just know military surplus is often corrosive

Good rate! My instructors usually charge $100, but only $70 for veterans. Best part of the deal is that Texas only charges half the normal CHL fee for veterans.

If you haven't already scheduled your fingerprinting, I'd suggest doing so ASAP (it's part of the online license application process). I took the class on a Saturday, and as soon as we were done, I did my application online. Was able to get in for prints the following Friday (my day off.....could've actually scheduled for two days earlier, but didn't want to take time off work). Other people who did their class the same time I did mine were waiting 3 weeks or more, if they waited to schedule (doesn't help that we only have one available fingerprinting place in town).

Also, be glad that Texas dropped the requirement for passport photos (just recently), and just uses your D/L photo now. Saves you another $10!!

$50 to rent a gun sounds absolutely ridiculous. The local range I took my class at two months ago charges $5 per gun to rent (most of the time if you start shooting and don't like the gun you picked, they will swap you to another one for no fee) and $15-20 a box for handgun caliber ammo. The total for my class was $85 + $5 (gun) + $34 (100 rounds of 9mm).

Been to the range twice since and they always have .45 ACP in stock for $20 a box. They manage to keep most all calibers in stock since they only sell for range use.

I shot my first gun in that class, and I since bought a Springfield XDS bi-tone. I'm currently waiting for my CHL, holster, and gun belt to arrive. I love the XDS so far, it's the perfect size for my small, girly hands.

Good question!

I believe it is a Russian made one, as it has the Tula star on it?

I'm quite new to the whole thing, so far I've just got the SKS which needs its first cleaning, and a Ruger SR-22 because good luck finding a 10/22 right now in canada.

I picked up the SKS because of what I had heard about it, and the local wholesaleports had them in stock again. Figured I'd do more reading and learn more about it as I go

There's plenty of places to help ya identify that sks. If it has a star with arrow in it, that is the tula arsenal. Milsurp.com I think it is has good info on the history and identification. There's plenty other sites to help as well.

If it is a Russian congrats! Those are getting a bit harder to find as the Chinese ones keep coming in now

I picked up a 10/22 laser made by lasermax today when I was in my local ace hardware, to give it a try on my take-down.

I had to cut the first barrel band to get it to fit over my tech sights, but I re-epoxy'd it in place, and it holds good and tight. The rear barrel band is the only one with a screw that holds it on.

Its exactly as you decribe, Star with an arrow in it and made in 1954!

I stripped it down last night to clean it, surprisingly not bad compared to some of the cosmoline removal video's I've seen.

Firing pin was floating freely and in great condition which is a bit of a relief after watching some of the slam fire videos!

I have a new scope and rail coming for my Marlin 1895. tired of the scope that is on it trying to destroy my face when I shoot the heavy handloads, so I am making it into a scout rifle.

Found a set of the XS scout rail with ghost ring sights for the Marlin on ebay, and I ordered a Burris 2.75x scout scope with some QD rings for it off of amazon today. Should make for a much nicer shooting rifle, hoping to take it on a hog hunt this summer.

Now I need to sell some scopes on craigslist. Put up an ad for my new in box zeiss conquest, and an old tasco world class 2-7 I have lying around, but so far no takers.

Damn, I haven't looked in a while but is that what 80% lowers are going for now? Not quite 2 years ago I got a finished one for $80...I know mine has a serial number but still...I would like to do one some day though just to say I did it:awe:

Prices have been coming down on 80%'s pretty quick I think. They would be going out of stock at $200 a month ago, but I see them at 150 now reliably from a store and 130 from someone trying to sell it privately.
