Thoughts about using gun grease on barrels? The outside, not inside the barrel.

I've a Walther PPX (which is awesome by the way, totally worth checking out for the budget side of guns) that really starts to heat up after 250ish rounds. The manual states to use lube on the outside of the barrel, and I've heard conflicting opinions on oil vs grease for something like this..

Lots of opinions. General consensus is proper weapons lube first, generic lubes as a last resort.

Oil for me.

I only use a very small amount on the outside of the barrel. The runoff from cleaning the slide is all I use.

Can a dirty bore (175-200 rounds) have a lower point of impact than a clean bore in a .223? My rifle was shooting about 2" lower at 200 yards at the end of the day than at the beginning. Started clean and ended with nearly 200 rounds down the tube. Going insane trying to think this out.

Id be worried if after 200 rounds youre bore was fouled up enough to cause anything. Ill usually shoot 300-400 rounds through my 308 before i clean it. And even that is just a couple patches and a brush through it.

Really one thing i have learned is it if happens once then just wait and try again the next time. if it still does it then, then its time to problem shoot. Ive taken a rifle out and shot like crap before, thought i needed to change things, then go out the next time and it shoots perfect without changing a thing.

Not saying that happened to you but i wouldnt worry about it shooting a bit low at the end of the day. Try it the next time you go and if its still low...thats a simple rezero on the scope to fix.

Run a boresnake thru every 200 rounds. Nothing else. No need for full cleaning and lube in the middle of the day. But a boresnake could help.

I once spend a whole saturday shooting up everything I had. Barrel was fuckin NASTY by the time I was done. Had the good sense to clean it out right there, then took home for a full strip.

Price for most ammo is almost back to normal before the Sandy shooting and Obama's coming out party.

I've fired literally 1500+ rounds in one outing before using a Boresnake. If you're fouling your barrel that quickly, something may be wrong with either your ammo or your barrel.

I use a cotton rag or old t-shirt to wipe down bolts and bolt carrier groups, and a boresnake for barrels. Then lightly lube using whatever free samples I happened to get at my last shooting event (such as EWL 2000) and call it good.

Moonbogg, what type of ammo were you shooting?

Nosler 55gr ballistic tip, flat base varmint bullets.
25gr accurate 2520

I am officially going with this advice. Its simple and won't hurt a thing. Maybe nothing is wrong and its all in my head. This kind of thing happened before when I thought my gun was shooting to the right about 5" at 200 yards. Turns out I simply underestimated the effect of wind and there was nothing wrong with the gun at all. I hope something similar applies here.

I keep seeing 250 rd boxes of UMC FMJ at Walmart in 9mm, .40, and .45 but I already have around 1000 rds of Federal HST in everything.

Starting to see .22LR pop up here and there. Resellers are still lining up in the morning trying to keep supplies wiped out so they can flip it... No ammo in Walmart but a billion listings of .22 on armslist and gunbroker probably with Walmart price stickers still on them. /spit

I just picked up a new toy (or, more precisely, received it after ordering it at the beginning of September). This is a JP Enterprises JP-15 rifle. I ordered it with an 18" barrel with their compensator and red thermal dissipator on the barrel, their extra-long hand guard, and a TI-7 stock and Magpul MIAD grip. The operating parts are of course all JP, including their competition trigger, low mass bolt carrier group, enhanced 9310 steel bolt and adjustable gas block. I have equipped it with a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 scope on a Bobro extended mount, and a Larue Tactical padded sling (mounted by QD using the TI-7 on the stock and a JP QD mount on the hand guard).

The craftsmanship of the JP stuff is amazing. My pics (in poor light) probably won't capture it, but there is no perceptible joint where the compensator is threaded onto the barrel - you would swear it was one piece. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet but can't wait!

That's a great match setup. I love the reticle on the Vortex Viper PST.

Got an unopened case of Federal XM193 for 35 cents/round today. That's as low as I've seen it in almost a year.

Nice! Is that a TP-9? Seems like a very nice gun, though that name probably sounded better in a non-English speaking country!

The Canik TP-9 is an interesting creature...looks kinda like a P99, P30, and a Glock had a threeway and no one knows who got who pregnant.

^^The titanium is more likely, even though their FDE doesn't fit the "dark" part too well.

I hate videos like that

"Oh look a box. Wonder what's in it?"

"OH WOW A GUN!"

"Lets touch everything in the case"

"OK done"

Shoot the thing, field strip it, show us how it looks when carried. Videos like that make me want to punch the person that made them in the face.

you, sir, are an asshole. you're making me rethink my plans to get an M1a and save more to get one of these instead...

I hope it shoots as well as it looks.
