Dunno but I have a live 50 cal sitting on my desk right next to me and would never do that...? Now the rest of the video is good but that just all but sunk it for me...

Are you afraid it's going to go off? I'm not sure what you're on about here. Who cares if he put the round on his desk?

I got my wife’s hunting rifle back from the Smith last week and he did a great job. Her rifle was just too big for her hobbit size. Had six inches taken off of the barrel and a brake added, and about an inch taken off of the stock to get the length of pull set to about 12.5”. Also had a recoil absorbing pad put on the stock, and got the trigger worked on so it breaks clean at around 3lbs.

Hopefully she will use it in a few weeks to take a mule deer, and for elk in November (really excited for that one because we drew hair tags).

That's beautiful! Model 700 I'm guessing?

Skel... Uhm did you not see him at the beginning when he popped it down on the base...? Might be a dummy round but might not be...? Just a bit stupid if you ask me...?

Now back on track...

Anyone preparing for the upcoming hunting season? Whitetail deer season opens here Wednesday 10/10. I've got to go sight in my .308 and figure out exactly where I want to hunt. Make a scouting trip or two. The deer are thick in this area, and it will be my fist time doing any large game hunting. I hunted bird and small game when I was younger, but it's been awhile.

I plan to use my handheld GPS unit, the onX hunt app on my phone to make sure exactly where I am when I hunt. Will probably back it up with a compass and paper maps just to be sure and make sure I don't get lost. Can't be too safe if I go out solo. Around here I won't have to hike far at all, so that is good.

I'm actually more concern about field dressing and butchering the animal after the harvest. I've been watching videos on it and understand the process in theory but this will be my first time actually doing it. I'd like to try aging the meat before I freeze it, but don't know if daytime temperature will be low enough to do so quite yet. I'll have to google how to safely age deer quarters outside and see if it's feasible.

I'm sure I'm just overthinking and worrying for nothing. Man has been harvesting meat for...what...around 2 million years? I can always pick up steaks on the way home.

That is actually a browning a bolt II medallion. Very pretty Rifle before, but not even better.

It's the checkering that got me. Here's my 6mm. I think it's from '78. Got it from my Pappy when I was 11

Edit: yeah, bad cellphone photo. I just had to hold the phone above me head and hope for the best lol

I am actually posting from mule deer camp now. Mostly looking forward to elk after this though, that for me is the big show every year.

You're the second hunter in the last week who's told me Elk is where it's at. Have a safe and productive hunt.

To answer your question about dressing and butchering, it’s not that hard to gut it. I don’t butcher my own just because we usually get two deer and two elk every year, and it’s a PITA - so we just have a local butcher/game processor do it.

Gutting a deer is pretty easy though, just make sure not to puncture the stomach, bladder or any of that. Just cut around the butthole, and on the inside get it cut loose so you can pull all of that out. Then just rip out the rest and cut off the esophagus. Sounds gross but once you get the hang of it you can do it quick.

Elk is a whole other story, you gotta crawl up in there sometimes, but it is easier to Skin it and cut the quarters off first before you gut one of those.

Hunting season may not start around here until Oct. 10th, but I took my first whitetail buck ever last night. Too bad it was with my mini-van. About a 1.5 year old, killed him clean with a broadside to his right front shoulder. Called the cops and left him in a ditch for them to salvage, but he broke off one of his antlers when he hit the road, so I did get a small souvenir. Might try to make a knife handle out of it, ideally with a skinner blade to use on the next deer I take. Totally not worth it considering the damage to my van. Gun>>>>>Van for hunting.

Ouch...! Looks to be about $3500-$5000 in damage to your van, dude that sucks... But it happens heck I am waiting for one to jump out right in front of my truck... Just yesterday some young guy on the highway in front of WalMart at a light hit me in the rear of my truck with a Jeep but sorry my Chevy 2500HD punched back and took out his license plate and front bumper... Hehe barely left a scratch on my ball and hitch... But again sorry and glad your ok...

Took me 9 days and almost 90 miles of walking, but I finally found a buck, and it is by far the biggest one I have ever gotten.

I used my ruger no1 in .243 shooting a 95g ballistic silvertip, at about 50 yards in thick timber.

Took me about three hours to get it out via ATV this evening, and I know for sure it’s bigger than the last spike elk I shot last.

Nice.

How many pounds do you figure make it to the freezer?

I wil have this mostly ground into burger so I will have some beef fat added, but It’s hard to say. The last little spike elk I got filled two big yeti 120 coolers when I picked it up from the processor, so I am guessing at least that much.

Now that deer is over I have been gearing up to go fill a couple of elk tags. Got my primary and backup elk rifles to the range today, and made sure they are dialed in.

The .300 win mag (on the left) was dialed in perfect from last year using my handloads loaded with 200g Barnes long range x bullets. However it has been a while since I have shot the .375 H&H and the factory loads I was planning to use (couple boxes of Winchester fail safe bullets I have squirreled away), I was getting terrible groups. I was about to blame the scope but I tried the handloads in the pic, using 235g Barnes triple shock x bullets at around 3200fps, and it was grouping just fine. Both are dialed in for dead on at 200 yards, so now I just need to arrange an encounter with an elk next month. I won’t even be picky since we have hair tags, I can shoot a bull or a cow.

How's the shoulder feeling?

Do you find the elk tastier than the deer. Cows better than the bulls?

I actually find it the other way around, I like the tast of deer better than most elk, at least in regards to roasts and steaks.’ I get most of my elk every year ground into burger though - meatloafs, chili, tacos, etc are great. I would prefer to shoot a big bull just because it is a big bull, but the timing of our season is post rut, so the boys are going to be split off from the main herd into bachelor groups. We are much more likely to run into more cows than we are bulls, so it’s going to be hard to let a big cow walk away when it’s uncertain whether I will even see a bull.

The shoulder feels fine though, the brake on the .375 tames it right down, and the win mag isn’t so bad either. I only shot 3 rounds out of the win mag though, it was dead on at 200 just like last year.

Been busy plus I do not see any need to purchase anything new right now because there is no "must have it" items come out. Maybe next year?

Too lazy to hit the range, no money to buy a new gun, etc.
Would a $299 AR-15 in .223 Wylde (shoots 5.56 and .223) temp your budget? I know Bear Creek Arsenal has had some issues before, but their ARs are getting decent reviews these days.

Damn, I wish I wasn't so broke ATM. When I was a little kid I would study the toy pages of the Sears catalog composing my Christmas list. I spend way too much time on the gun/knife deal sites doing the same thing today.

$300 plus $10 flat shipping is very good. Palmetto State'ss best price is $330 for a completed AR15.
