YAGT: *POLL* M16 vs AK47. Which is the superior weapon?

So, which is the all around better weapon? The Ak47 or M16. Started from another post, was curious what the general consensus was.

Saw something on the Discovery Channel the other night about this...from the little bit that I saw, seemed that the AK47 had the advantage just because the M16's jammed so damn much and had to be cleaned constantly...

Do they show someone with an (issue) AK try to hit something reliably at 200 yards?

If that could be argued then why the poll in the first place? It just depends on what is meant by "all around better"

Which version of the M16 are we talking here. I personally didn't like the implementation of the 3 round burst on the A2. I think the m16 is the superior weapon, if you are talking medium to long range combat. I'd rather have the AK in full auto for close range personally.

The general simple breakdown
M16 = Better accuracy, less reliable
AK47 = Less accurate, more reliable.

The big question is, when its go time and you rlife is on the line, do you want to maybe have the gun fire and definately hit your target, or definately have the gun fire and maybe hit your target? Granted, thats simplified.

What good is aiming if the gun doesnt fire? We've all heard stories about AK's firing after being stored in riverbeds for weeks. And we've all heard stories about M16's jamming cause some guy took it out fo the protective plastic bag and it got a gust of wind stuck in the action....

m-16 much more accurate, less reliable in the field.

AK-47, less accurate, much more reliable in battle.

I own the semi-auto version of each gun and from my experience I would choose the M-16. The AK is robust and fires a larger caliber round but the sights are primitive at best and considering it's lack of asccuracy I think they are just there because guns are supposed to "have them". I have a high quality Hungarian AK also, not one of the cheap Chinese POS, so I would consider mine one of the better ones also.

Maybe if you tune it up, but an issue version just doesnt shoot that well.

I make sub 1 MOA groups at 200 yards just about every time I shoot at that range, provided I have a good rifle and good ammo. A man sized target at 500 yards, in order to score a decently placed torso hit (not just grazing the skin, but hitting organs), you're looking at a target maybe 12-15 inches wide. Your average M16 firing military ball ammo has an MOA of about 2. At 500 yards, that loosely translates into 10 a 10 inch circle. Even if the AK has an MOA of 3 at 500 yards, its pretty iffy. And at 500 yards, I dont think a normal AK is going to achieve an MOA of 3.

Overall the m16 is better. The US army doesn't use an AK47 and IMO they can use whatever the hell they want.

From what I've read and understood from movies and video games and never having fired anything in my life except a BB gun and shotgun I hear that the 47 is very reliable and exceptionally well constructed (moreso than teh m16).

I'd take an M16. I maintain my weapons, so one is as reliable as the other.

If we're talking apocalypse and a survival weapon, I'd go with the AK strictly for it's reliability.

Actually, I'd take an M16 and a .45 sidearm. That's a nice combo.



This has me inspired. Time to take the tax return and finish the AR15 I'm building. I was planning on waiting for the AWB to sunset, but I guess I can always add those goodies later.

Its not better constructed, so to speak. The tolerances on an AK are very loose, which is why you can abuse the hell out of it and it'll fire. Loose tolerances are also why the accuracy is sub-par.
