Excellent gun and very serviceable.

I just spoke with a guy at work and he said it was, hands down, the best shotgun you can get, especially for home defense. So this is the one I'll probably be getting. He actually has one he doesn't use and said he would probably sell... doesn't even think he has shot it.

He has the 870 Tactical I believe.

He doesn't think he has shot the one he is going to sell me. He has tons of guns and I think he has two other 870's he said.

Here is a video that contrasts the Rem 870 with the Moss 590. My friend has the Moss 590 and likes it, and he uses it for home defense purposes and sometimes sport shooting he says.

Personally, I think based on the video and the feedback from this thread, I'd have to go with the Moss 590 based on size alone. For home defense, I think a smaller footprint is worth it. I know 0 about weaponry outside of pixels on a screen though.

When I read the title, I thought it said "Yet Another Girl Thread: Recommend me a shotgun" and expected all hell to break loose.

That would make for a very interesting thread though.

I've been shooting many times and have taken a firearms safety course... something like 3 classes or so. I've shot many rifles and handguns, but never a shotgun.

I will be putting myself through a self defense course and a police training course offered at a couple ranges here.

Then you should know the difference between gauges, sorry but that just doesn't add up to me. I'm not trying to be a dick I'm just saying....

If someone is not familar with shotguns, why should they be familiar with gauges?

No extra training needed, just treat the shotgun as any other firearm.

Oh, and you want a 10gauge for self defense. Accept no substitutes.

What it is all going to boil down to is personal preference and what is important to you. For the purpose you indicate, the Benelli, Mossberg and Remington will all serve you well. If I wasn't such a cheap SOB, I might well have gone with the Remington or the Benelli, but I have had my Mossberg 500 for 17 years or so now and it has served me well over the years in dove fields, duck blinds, on skeet shoots, and with the optional 18.5" barrel I bought for it - home defense (not that I have actually had to use it). I would put it up against my best friends' 870 Express or Benelli Nova in any situation and not worry about their guns outperforming mine (even if the shooter might).

This.

The course I took was on handguns, and in that course they didn't teach you the finer details of a pistol. All just basic safety that would go along with every gun along with loading, dissembling, etc a handgun.

I still don't fully know and understand all the different calibers of bullets and what works better for what, when, why, and the history behind them. I have no problem admitting it and I have no problems asking questions when I don't know. That does not mean I do not know how to operate, understand, and respect firearms.

The guy here at work has the 870 Express Synthetic... but I don't know if I the tactical would be better for what I want. I do want to go hunting so if I got the express it would be good for both I guess. Dunno.

I'm also still looking over the other suggestions.

Once you have a shotty, get some double ought buckshot for it.

Most trap/bird loads are not enough to provide true stopping power, and if your life is threatened to the point of firing a gun at someone, you want to have stopping power.

And hit what you want. Birdshot to the face is more effective than buckshot in a wall.

Guns are like condoms. It's better to have it and not need than need it and not have it.

sorry though, no suggestions. All I've got is a 9mm

Firearm safety courses always go over shotguns, but that's besides the point.

OP- he is being sarcastic about the 10 gauge.

Taking the courses you said you were going to is a great idea, like I said I'm not trying to be a jerk about this but this is a serious matter, as you know there may come a time that you need to use this firearm to defend yourself, lethally if need be. Check out this site. for explanations of the shotgun gauges.

You need to go to a reputable gun shop and have them make sure the stock of the gun is a easy raise for you. Some of the tactical suggestions here have adjustable stocks so this wont be an issue. If you have a range near you that rents shotguns i would definitely take advantage of that to become more familiar with shotguns, it will help you figure out what fits you best. If anyone else in your house will have access to the firearm I suggest they become trained too.

Law enforcement sponsored training should offer basic shoot/don't shoot education.

While we're on the subject of shotguns ... anyone know of a decent side-by-side double barrel w/ 2 triggers in the sub-$1000 range? I grew up hunting small game with a side-by-side and they're still my favorite shotgun. They just seem to feel right. Most of the double's I see now are either over/under or super expensive.

The only one I've found was the "Remington" SPR220. Digging into it a little, I found that it's imported from Russia and the overall quality questionable.
