My wife of two years is Korean and I'm caucasian, and we live in South Carolina.

When we go shopping at Korean shops, she and the shop owner will speak in korean and that's fine with me. I know that both of them are more comfortable speaking korean and I am usually very interested in all you can buy there that you can't buy at WalMart .

Maybe you can call it training but I know to say goodbye to elders whenever I depart, but my wife was never rude or made me embarassed when we first started being together. At first, I was a little apprehensive speaking Korean for I only knew a couple of words and was scared I would embarass myself or offend the person I was talking to. But over time I found that most Koreans that I have met are just impressed that you attempted to speak Korean even if you made a mistake.

If my wife ever treated me like you girlfriend did when leaving the shop I would have been upset. It has happened to me but I think my wife was much more tactful at the time, than your girlfriend.

Overall I have an extremely good impressions of Koreans that are here and in South Korea, but perhaps I am biased

I wouldn't say that we do not talk in the shop for we do while we are shopping. But at times she may start talking to the owner about a new rice cooker and it turns out to be a long conversation. It is just that we usually do not visit the korean shop but once a mon or so, and when we go they have to catch up on the gossip I guess

By the way does anyone here get the Korean satellite service? I know it is out there but would like to hear from someone who has it. It may not be an actual korean satellite, bt a system where you can get many Korean channels.

I currently have Korean Satellite TV service at my home. Believe you me, the thing is ON all the time! Freakin Korean Dramas are TOO ADDICTING!! Beware!!! And you have been warned.

I think we pay about 250 bones a year for 3 channels, all MBC channels. Lots of dramas, korean news, specials, sports, and lots of music.

I know you can get Japanese tv (one channel) through satellite so I wouldn't be suprised.

Let me make a blanket statement here: white + traditional Korean = fuXor. Cant' work.

I dated a traditional Korean woman for a year. I was crazy about her. But Korean culture is unwaveringly exclusionist and xenophobic. Her family cut her off completely, disowned her, and harassed her until she left me. Previously good friends of mine who were Korean suddenly hated me and became antagonistic. Just forget it...it's not worth it.

My experiene is quite the opposite. I have a German wife. I'm American. All her friends and family is relaxed and cool about her married to an American.
