i'll spare you the story. but i got all sad and made a song about it. The last yagt thread, somebody mentioned that I should get hurt more often so I make more music like the last song I posted.... dont worry.. I don't sing, its more in vein of Joe Satriani... erotic backdrop with really sweet melodies.. ..... Fact, I was kinda thinking of Joe Satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream, and I wanted something sweet, so i called the song "Sweet Fly" The fly, not from flying in a blue dream, but because I think solo leads sometimes remind me of fireflies..... so, sweet fly... I dunnoo..... i made it all from scratch... plotted out the drum line with reason, and did the rest using a variety of amps (line6 spyder and a carvin amp), effects, two guitars, a 5 string bass and a fretless bass....

I'm interested to hear what people think about it. Its still a rough draft, but I doubt I'll spend anymore time mixing it... I really like the mood... I played alot with changing modes of the scale I used (e minor), so I hardly actually play an E note... Actually, the key is E minor, but most of the modes I used were relative major variations, so the major feel juxtaposed onthe minor background really added a melancholly feel... I experimented with a harmonizer pedal, pitch shifting up two octaves when I played, then shifting what was recorded down an octave using the audio software, for a total shift of a single octave up (up 2, down 1)... it made for a nice decayish texture to the guitar.... On top of that, when the whole track was finished, I pitch shifted it up about a half step.... I used my ear instead of trying to make it a certain pitch, like E....

my only dislike is that I think sometimes the guitars are a bit to biting and sharp... but if I turn them down, they get hard to hear.... I tried to find the balance...

Regardless, find it here. link

listen to the first song. "sweet fly"

On sweetfly, I did the primary drum track in reason using some latin drum kit. The additional high hats and splash were done in fruity loops using a drum sample set from Natural Studios. I imported both tracks into magix audio studio 2k4.. audio studio is pretty good and was cheap (at best buy for under $80). you canuse vst plugins and such... after everything is mixed up, i export it to wavelab lite, which is an app that came with my sound card... i use that for post mix compression and mastering.... One problem I still have in mixing that I havent gotten around is really maxing out the sound... Like, I can get everything mixed up nice, and ill get it to where I can't turn it up any louder in the mixdown... no matter what, "professionally" done tracks are always alot louder overall... Anyways

try panning out the guitars. double up on the tracks, make one pan to the left at like 30% and make another pan to the right at 30%. it really widens up the sound and makes it a little louder. i can't record a bass guitar to save my life

I actually pan things alot... it does create more space because it doesnt run everything together in the center image...

I think at this point, it comes down the quality of compression/limiting that I'm using... I think if I had a better compressor, I could compress the track better w/o loosing noticible dynamics, and give me more head room to increase the gain....

i think im going to redo the fretless bass line in the beginning... Its fretless until the extra high hats come in, then the line drops an octave, of which requred the 5 string...

with the fretless, I was trying to do some vibrato, but it really just sounds like the intonation is off..... ive been lying to myself when I hear it, so far as to let it into the mix!
